Also today's simple either-or climate between Lightning and USB-C pales in comparison to the ridiculousness of those years.I'm old enough to remember. And that wasn't solved by government mandates.

Agreed I wish these stupid poor people complaining about having to buy 2 cords would get off this forum. You should be able to make whatever power cord you want. Stupid.
As an ideal I agree with no government intervention. However in this case the opposite has happened. Zero intervention has allowed a monopoly to make corporate greed the priority.Yeah, but the point you're missing is now it's going to take much much longer since approval will be required from our government overlords. Government regulation like this stifles innovation and progress.
Innovation wasn’t slow. Innovation just… wasn’t happening. It’s not even about innovation. Just common sense and practicality. If you thought innovation was slow before, just watch what happens in the future due to this new requirement.
Chinese sellers on amazon just love selling their terrible non-compliant unsafe USB - c and lighting connector cables year after year. Then amazon sends out a warning that they can and will cause fires or explosions. If you thought innovation was slow before, just watch what happens in the future due to this new requirement.
I agree. Why do I feel like he is mad about this 😂. For sure does not seem happy.Jaws always comes off as so arrogant to me
Yeah I could definitely see them keeping lightning speed (since there’s nothing saying they can’t. That’s already the case that not all USB-C are created equal).Yeah, “We’ll have to comply” doesn’t exactly make me super confident about them doing more than the bare minimum requirement. I wouldn’t be shocked if they had a USB-C iPhone with USB 2.0 speeds for the first year.
Apple is lucky they didn’t get a hefty fine. They got away with it honestly. EU is being nice to Apple. Change is coming! I’m glad the ruling was made this early on stage. Apple has plenty of time to implement it. No more excuses! 🤫
This. USB-C was designed to be future-proof. It has enough pins with appropriate impedance matching for high speed data that it really can't get much better without moving to an optical connector.
While I think it is unlikely companies will adopt proprietary charging schemes in addition to PD, that is allowed in the EU regulation. A somewhat more likely approach would be special data transfer schemes that require a special cable for data while still supporting PD.I really wish I could have just used the one USB-C cable I brought to charge my laptop, iPad, headphones, and Steam Deck!
And it's a physical connector, not a protocol. We're a long way from exhausting the capability of the port. Thunderbolt 5 anyone? For all of you complaining about the prospect of a better connector that may come in the future...
Guys the legislation is not set in stone. It can adapt if something better comes along!
At the moment usb-c is the best we have.
I'm old enough to remember. And that wasn't solved by government mandates.
The only thing we really need now are multi-port hubs that aren't $250 for four ports. It’s not just future proof. The spec allows for proprietary implementations using the pin outs; and all the EU requires is teh physical connector and PD, so companies can have their own versions of USB-C if they want.

Honestly I'd cackle if Apple sank that low 🤭 The mess here would be gloriousYeah I could definitely see them keeping lightning speed (since there’s nothing saying they can’t. That’s already the case that not all USB-C are created equal).
“You wanted USB-C? You’re getting USB-C…in looks only”. Petty? Absolutely. Could I see it happening? Yep.
No, this law is bad for consumers in the long term. Are we supposed to feel sorry for a 3 trillion dollar company?
Yup...everyone complaining about the standard, is probably typing on a device plugged into a standard wall outlet. Imagine if your toaster, tv, clock, stereo, gaming console, etc all used different electrical outlets. It'd be like traveling internationally several times per day.
Oh for sure 😂Honestly I'd cackle if Apple sank that low 🤭 The mess here would be glorious
please tell me you're not serious...Cowards, kowtowing to tyranny. Pull out of the EU market to teach them a lesson!
A voluntary MOU is a lot different than a government mandate.
I hope they do it. I wish apple would just abandon EU and make them beg for apple to come back tbhHonestly I'd cackle if Apple sank that low 🤭 The mess here would be glorious
So staying on Lightning 2.0 is good? When Apple is advertising 4K ProRes video recording. On a Pro iPhone stuck with a 2000 era protocol and speed.I completely disagree. I think this viewpoint is very shortsighted, because it puts advancement of technology in the hands of bureaucrats. Most of the tech we use now could not exist if companies were forced to stick to established methods of doing things. And as others pointed out… it is inevitable that usb-c will some day (need to be) surpassed by superior technology. It inevitably it will become a bottleneck. But how are we supposed to make advancements if governments force them to stick to whatever standard they prefer. And which government gets to pick amongst competing technologies and decide on what is the ’winner’.
Please people, I get why you like the outcome… like you, I prefer usb-c to Lightning. But this sets a horrible precedent, and will certainly inhibit future development.
Apple likely had reasons for not switching to usb-c. Reasons they probably kept secret. How do they move those plans forward. How do they give us something new, something better, if they are forced to do what everyone else does. Is “think differently” not a thing anymore?
