You should be able to make whatever power cord you want. Stupid.
Agreed I wish these stupid poor people complaining about having to buy 2 cords would get off this forum.

I mean seriously. I like lightning. I would rather have it than usb c personally. But nope people cry and whine to get their devices closer to androids.

With as much as people complain about apple i don’t see why they just don’t go to Android

Yeah, but the point you're missing is now it's going to take much much longer since approval will be required from our government overlords. Government regulation like this stifles innovation and progress.
As an ideal I agree with no government intervention. However in this case the opposite has happened. Zero intervention has allowed a monopoly to make corporate greed the priority.

Apple doesn't innovate anymore because it's #1 by a long shot. I want to see apple on the ropes again inventing new things.

If you thought innovation was slow before, just watch what happens in the future due to this new requirement.
Chinese sellers on amazon just love selling their terrible non-compliant unsafe USB - c and lighting connector cables year after year. Then amazon sends out a warning that they can and will cause fires or explosions.

Yeah, “We’ll have to comply” doesn’t exactly make me super confident about them doing more than the bare minimum requirement. I wouldn’t be shocked if they had a USB-C iPhone with USB 2.0 speeds for the first year.
Yeah I could definitely see them keeping lightning speed (since there’s nothing saying they can’t. That’s already the case that not all USB-C are created equal).

“You wanted USB-C? You’re getting USB-C…in looks only”. Petty? Absolutely. Could I see it happening? Yep.

Apple is lucky they didn’t get a hefty fine. They got away with it honestly. EU is being nice to Apple. Change is coming! I’m glad the ruling was made this early on stage. Apple has plenty of time to implement it. No more excuses! 🤫

I completely disagree. I think this viewpoint is very shortsighted, because it puts advancement of technology in the hands of bureaucrats. Most of the tech we use now could not exist if companies were forced to stick to established methods of doing things. And as others pointed out… it is inevitable that usb-c will some day (need to be) surpassed by superior technology. It inevitably it will become a bottleneck. But how are we supposed to make advancements if governments force them to stick to whatever standard they prefer. And which government gets to pick amongst competing technologies and decide on what is the ’winner’.
Please people, I get why you like the outcome… like you, I prefer usb-c to Lightning. But this sets a horrible precedent, and will certainly inhibit future development.
Apple likely had reasons for not switching to usb-c. Reasons they probably kept secret. How do they move those plans forward. How do they give us something new, something better, if they are forced to do what everyone else does. Is “think differently” not a thing anymore?

This. USB-C was designed to be future-proof. It has enough pins with appropriate impedance matching for high speed data that it really can't get much better without moving to an optical connector.

It’s not just future proof. The spec allows for proprietary implementations using the pin outs; and all the EU requires is teh physical connector and PD, so companies can have their own versions of USB-C if they want.

I really wish I could have just used the one USB-C cable I brought to charge my laptop, iPad, headphones, and Steam Deck!
While I think it is unlikely companies will adopt proprietary charging schemes in addition to PD, that is allowed in the EU regulation. A somewhat more likely approach would be special data transfer schemes that require a special cable for data while still supporting PD.

In addition, while I think the iPhone 15 will uses USB-C given Apple’s move to it already on iPads and Macs, there is no requirement for it to use USB-C if it is introduced before the ruling requires USB-C; which, IIRC, is not until late in teh year.

For all of you complaining about the prospect of a better connector that may come in the future...
Guys the legislation is not set in stone. It can adapt if something better comes along!

At the moment usb-c is the best we have.
And it's a physical connector, not a protocol. We're a long way from exhausting the capability of the port. Thunderbolt 5 anyone?

The only thing we really need now are multi-port hubs that aren't $250 for four ports.

Honestly I'd cackle if Apple sank that low 🤭 The mess here would be glorious

Actually it partially was:

Yup...everyone complaining about the standard, is probably typing on a device plugged into a standard wall outlet. Imagine if your toaster, tv, clock, stereo, gaming console, etc all used different electrical outlets. It'd be like traveling internationally several times per day.

Cowards, kowtowing to tyranny. Pull out of the EU market to teach them a lesson!
please tell me you're not serious...

Apple pulling out the EU because of this? lol. Cmon, don't be so silly.

Lightning is severely dated and needs replaced. Let's pretend for a second apple weren't moving to USB C. They'd likely be replacing Lightning soon with another proprietary connector. What's so bad about using USB C instead? Why not move to USB C like any other modern electronic device? If apple is so concerned for the environment they'd do it.

Apple is NOT leaving the EU for this haha. You'll just need to suck it up because now we have official word from Apple that they are going USB C. I was going to say if you don't like it then don't buy another iPhone but that means you will need to buy either an old out of date, possibly second hand, iPhone or move to Android and guess what cable that uses?

I think Apple could have avoided this had they licensed Lightning for free and upgraded it to USB3 on the iPhone as they did on iPads for three years. Overall this is quite unfortunate because as good as USB-C is for integrating both USB and Thunderbolt, it's kind of a crummy port for small device use, not as easily sealed as Lightning and more prone to dirt ingression, and of course not able to take the vast amount of already-manufactured iAccessories.

EU should have mandated a "unified wireless charging platform" instead for all small electronic devices... if they really cared about the environment.
Enforcing old school usb chargers bundled with cables and plugs is not going to help the environment much...
It is as stupid as banning plastic straws at restaurants when 90% of the goods we buy are packaged in plastic...
Just stupid BS...

So staying on Lightning 2.0 is good? When Apple is advertising 4K ProRes video recording. On a Pro iPhone stuck with a 2000 era protocol and speed.

USB 2.0 was released in the year 2000. 22 years later Apple is still using it on the iPhone?

WHY? There is already USB 4, something better is already here and has been here for a LONG TIME.

Other point why move the Mac and iPad to USB-C?
