I think Apple could have avoided this had they licensed Lightning for free and upgraded it to USB3 on the iPhone as they did on iPads for three years. Overall this is quite unfortunate because as good as USB-C is for integrating both USB and Thunderbolt, it's kind of a crummy port for small device use, not as easily sealed as Lightning and more prone to dirt ingression, and of course not able to take the vast amount of already-manufactured iAccessories.
It's sad actually as Lightning is just objectively a better physical connector. Sad that Apple had to rest on their laurels and let it stagnate.

An internal email and certified mail was sent to the Apple Exec team on October 25, 2022, at 7:35 AM requesting Apple to introduce USB-C with the upcoming iPhone 15. This was one of the requests that made the list. Yes, Joz was included.

Let’s see if Apple will grant my wishes. This is one out of 3. 🤫

Chinese sellers on amazon just love selling their terrible non-compliant unsafe USB - c and lighting connector cables year after year. Then amazon sends out a warning that they can and will cause fires or explosions.
Yeah, that's a problem with every connector and cable. You get what you pay for, and I'm not going to plug a housand dollar device into a $2 cable and $5 charger.

please tell me you're not serious...

Apple pulling out the EU because of this? lol. Cmon, don't be so silly.

Lightning is severely dated and needs replaced. Let's pretend for a second apple weren't moving to USB C. They'd likely be replacing Lightning soon with another proprietary connector. What's so bad about using USB C instead? Why not move to USB C like any other modern electronic device? If apple is so concerned for the environment they'd do it.

Apple is NOT leaving the EU for this haha. You'll just need to suck it up because now we have official word from Apple that they are going USB C. I was going to say if you don't like it then don't buy another iPhone but that means you will need to buy either an old out of date, possibly second hand, iPhone or move to Android and guess what cable that uses?

I wish apple would abandon them, and wish that rhe USD SOARS. Screwing EU in every way possible, people will have to pay extraordinary pricing to import them in a black market

I’d laugh so hard

Merica the best. Heard it here

Yeah, but the point you're missing is now it's going to take much much longer since approval will be required from our government overlords. Government regulation like this stifles innovation and progress.
Sorry but this is nonsens. USB-C is a good connector and it does already support upcoming USB4 and Thunderbolt4 specs. On the other hand it takes Apple at least 5 years to fix anything, like their butterfly keyboards.

USB-C specs are available since 2014 and are still good for another 10 years. If there is a new and better standard, industry and the EU will move on.

I have USB-C on literally 30 different devices in my household, possibly 50. Yet I fail to see the fascination and joy that people seem to get from Apple being forced to make this change.

I can tell you about at least 5 different devices I own that no longer charge/function correctly due to the way the USB-C female port wears after repeated connections. And it's the female or device-side port that wears, which means buying an entire new device or an expensive repair is needed.

I've owned literally every iPhone and virtually all iPads ever made with Lightning. How many of those have have female connections that have worn out over the past 10 years? Zero. Because Lightning is a more robust physical connector.

Agreed I wish these stupid poor people complaining about having to buy 2 cords would get off this forum.

I mean seriously. I like lightning. I would rather have it than usb c personally. But nope people cry and whine to get their devices closer to androids.

With as much as people complain about apple i don’t see why they just don’t go to Android

THANK YOU for this reply.......Even tho I don't like lighting cables.
I do not see people changing to android.

----------------- people seem to think in a Utopia world there should be only one cord. but really it is not. Nobody forcing you to use apple products? If you don't like it go android!

Now if they can just get the usb naming and branding right!

This is so true. You know most non-nerd laypeople are gonna be PISSED when all their Lighting cables and accessories are rendered useless or dongle-fied. There will be significant backlash just like there was from non-nerds when Lightning was introduced.
I don't think the backlash will be quite as severe as the 30-Pin > Lightning transition.

Most audio/video/data transfer happens via various wireless protocols now days as compared to 2011. In addition with a majority of the world using Android devices and a significant majority of iPhone users owning an iPad or MacBook, USB-C cables are very common out in the wild.

It is as stupid as banning plastic straws at restaurants when 90% of the goods we buy are packaged in plastic...
Just stupid BS...
Off topic, I know. But I had to laugh about this one because just an hour ago, I was given a paper straw in a plastic wrapper. Where I live, plastic straws and the paper wrapper they came in were both recyclable. Now everywhere here switched to paper straws. The straw…still recyclable. The plastic wrapper they now come in…not recyclable. Oops

Um, lightning is 8 pins. Usb c is 24. How is it better?
Because a solid monolith with rounded corners is easier to connect without looking in addition to being more durable, to add to what the user I quoted was saying about the discrepancy in port durability. Solid shape > hollow, sharp, flat-ended oval 🤷

It’s kind of wild that higher ups can get away with a casual blatant leak like that but if some middle level engineer let that out you know they’d be fired on the spot and who knows maybe sued and have equity cancelled

To anyone who is STILL suggesting Apple should do whatever type of cable they see fit, allow me to introduce you 1980s computer situation, where different company produces computers that are incompatible with everyone else’s, and even the same company produces computers that are incompatible with each other.

If you guys want the world where Apple produces new charging cable every year or 2 years that is only compatible with a handful of devices (say one cable per generation of iPhone), then petition the EU to allow Apple to produce new cable every single year. Heck, even better, make iPhone 14 Por Max incompatible with iPhone 13 Pro Max. I am sure it will be amazing For you guys out there saying USB-C stifle the innovation.

But are they Apple USB-C ports that have worn out? It seems they've strengthened them over time. They don't all have the same durability.

I'm not pro-Lightning. I'm anti-unnecessary government regulation and pro free market.
Like the National electric, fire, and plumbing codes That are widely adopted by governments at all levels?

Free markets are great, but without some level of regulation, you'd have human meat sold on the street, and mega corporations who use market power to stifle innovation. I remember when it was illegal to connect modems to the telephone network, and the phones were hard wired to the walls. Until the government forced them to open up. We're seeing that today with fios and cable companies requiring their modems that they control, monitor, and run their own Wi-Fi on the back of your service. Comcast is requiring not just their all in one, but also their managed internet service to get the latest upstream improvements. id love to see hard regulations banning that practice.

Regulation ensures that if the bottle says snake oil, then it damn well better be filled with snake oil. They do have their purpose.

I agree that regulations need to be minimized, but in this case, the smart phone market is hardly free. It's a duopoly.

Thanks for waiting as long as bleeping possible to do this Apple. IO speeds and device compatibility with your walled garden Lightning cable is nonsensical here and now. Especially when iPads and MacBook devices have made the switch long ago.

Really appreciated lightning (as compared to the 30 Pin dock setup) back when the iPhone 5 was new, but since then USB-C has been fully ratified and considered a standard for even the most basic / budget Android devices for years now.
