Pretty much. The EU almost did this 10 years ago when micro-USB was the standard. As you may recall, Lightning had the advantage over micro-USB in being reversible.
And much more reliable! Micro usb ports are very fragile and after some time it is pure luck if you get a proper connection. I have observed this with all Android phones used in the family …

You would think that with a war going on right next door, the threat of nukes, and people not able to heat their homes, what connector Apple uses wouldn't be the biggest fish to fry for the EU.
oh did they ... hmm let me see how many times the 80% of the Producst have changes the connector sice apple changed it from 40pin to lightning ... lets count, MiniUSB, MicroUSB, then some PropriateUSB and now last 3to4 years USB-C which still is not the same as the first one.

So what the hell are you talking here, you dont even know what you have written not that apple should have done something.

If you believ that you will change the USB-C iPhone with a standard USB-C cable from china ... LOLOLOLOLOLOL ... the be prepared for a surpise. YOU WONT :-D
Good I hope apple fuks EU somehow
Like, any non apple usb cord gets 1:10 speed

That would make me laugh. Brb have to buy apple cord to get full benefits

I hope to god they do
This

Exactly. USB-A refuses to die. And it's not even reversible! USB-C is much more convenient, less likely to die in the near future.
Yes everything except Lightning and C need to go already. Although heck Micro and Mini are shaped weird so you can tell by sight which way. I mean you can do that with A but you have to look inside the cable and port

Micro-USB is the worst connector of all time, Mini is slightly better. USB-A/B is WAY more robust. Yes, it's not reversible, but it's one of those It just "works all the time" type. Lightning is about as reliable as MiniUSB, but at least it's reversible. I can't wait until I have no more Lightning devices. I'll be happy when all I have is USB-C. (I have a Samsung tablet, iPad Mini, and a bunch of small things like screwdrivers and lights that are all USB-C already. My laptops are USB-C powered. Only my iPhone 14 Pro bucks the trend.)

Whether Lightning is better (thinner, maybe easier to make water-resistant) or worse (proprietary, less power, slower assuming the interface can take full advantage of USB-C) or more or less durable (I could argue that either way), it is STILL government overreach, certainly as long as a cable with different ends can connect to a standard charger or device.

If enough people stopped buying a product because they didn't like a feature, it would change. THAT is how these things should happen, not because some bureaucrat in Brussels decides to drag the rest of Europe (and the world even) along with them. Even IF their regulations are a good idea, they're not a good idea AS REGULATIONS. Power in itself is evil.

You are free to that opinion and the people of Europe are free to disagree with that.
Where do you draw the line on regulations? Should we still be building houses with asbestos, putting lead in petrol? I mean if people don’t want it they won’t buy it.

I mean if people don’t want it they won’t buy it.
This isn't really true and I think has gotten Apple in lots of trouble overtime. Think about the MacBook pros only having USB C. Since Macbook owners commonly use their ports for something besides charging, this was a huge deal, enough of a deal that the new MBPs have more ports.
But even if 70% of people disliked USB C on an iPhone but apple only sold 1% fewer iphones, would they think that was because of the charger type changing?

People have a certain threshold with features they do and don't want.

Here's an example
Lots of people buy Teslas even though they don't have CarPlay. Can some data scientist make a paper that says obviously people don't like CarPlay because tesla has sold a million cars without it? Yep. Is that a true statement? Nope.

I think you’ve totally missed the point I was making.
I was making the point that regulations exist because sometimes people don’t know what’s good for them.

Is usb c going to make something great?
USB-C means much higher bandwidth, more devices to connect to, a possibly Thunderbolt 4 connection which can be great if you use that iPhone for videography.

All that speed and proRAW features only to be choked by 480Mbps transfer? Come on 🤨

For many Lightning fans, I uploaded my drawings for the Lightning plug and receptacles to Wikimedia Commons.

So people won’t forget the connector after USB-C takes it all.

It was named eleven years ago.
(Presented at 2012, so 10 years…)
So it was USB 3.0.
Then, Lighting was way slow since 10 years ago.

Of course USB-C connector wasnt ready until 2014, so Lighting is way slower tech than USB-C 3.0 for 8 years now.

Apple is the king of using old tech where most of the people dont see or dont care, as the RAM trick “Apple optimize RAM for the system” yeahhh! For the current system, but they optimize OS just for the newer devices so RAM makes computers slow faster in Mac than in PC.

Cool

Also see Firewire 400, Firewire 800, and the 12" MacBook which was the first laptop to implement USB-C.

How many different types of wall sockets in the US? How many different types of plugs? How many different voltages?

There are at least 3 types of plugs and wall sockets in common use in the US, as well as 2 voltages.

All decisions of the "free market"?

Much was, as there were a number of competing systems, including DC and AC. How they standardized is a fascinating story, involving Edison, Westinghouse, mergers, electrocutions, etc. While government decisions and regulation drove some of it, much was the result of the marketplace. One major government intervention was agreeing with the utilities to allow them to be monopoly providers in return for a fixed return on assets; resulting in one utility CEO saying “This is the only business where I can redecorate my office and get an 8% return on the cost…”
