This observation doesn’t offer a solution but might be of interest. My 10.5 iPad Pro stopped being responsive to split screen gestures for several months until the past few weeks when it is working fine again. I thought it was hardware because the problem began after the screen cracked. Anyway, I am very relieved that it works perfectly fine now.

Sorry for the stupid question, but where is ”tap to wake”? I can’t find it anywhere after looking in Accessibility many times. I have an IPP 10.5 with IOS 13.1.2. It worked fine for quite awhile but now screen freezes constantly and I have to soft reset to fix.

I believe it only appears on the latest generation iPads that do not have a physical home button.

I have a 2018 3rd gen iPad Pro 256GB 12.9" that is experiencing this unresponsive touch display issue. It has been happening several times a day for about six months now. I thought that maybe iPadOS 13 would fix the issue, but it did not. The issue does seems less pervasive, which is weird, but it still happens. My first and second generation 12.9" iPad Pro did not exhibit this problem.

I contacted Apple last week and they are sending me a replacement since I am within the one year manufactures warranty. I am very hesitant to swap for the replacement not knowing if this is software or hardware related. With an Apple replacement, who knows where it comes from..is it new, its a refurb..if it was a refurb, how did the previous owner treat the iPad.

I just wanted to report back. Apple ended up sending me a replacement 12.9” iPad Pro. I have been using the new iPad Pro for about a month and a half now, and I have had no issues with the touch display.

The new iPad was manufactured in early-2019, and the problematic iPad was manufactured in mid-2018. I was able to deduce this from both serial numbers. I ordered the problematic iPad Pro the day of the announcement in 2018, so it was probably among the first batches of iPads manufactured and shipped... interesting, but it might not mean anything if iPads of other generations and models are having the same problem.

While we’re at it... my old iPad Pro had this issue and I retired it. Recently brought it out of mothballs, updated to the latest iOS, and restored from my daughter’s iPad backup. Now it works fine. So in my case, at least, clearly a software issue.

My 2017 iPad Pro just started having the unresponsive touch screen issue. I'm sure it's out of warrantee, but on the surface, it appears to be in good shape. I use the iPad for music in rehearsals and performances, and it is critical that the device remain responsive for page turns and the like. Another issue is that the problem isn't always consistent, so I could easily take it in for repair and it might not have any problems. I am considering contacting the folks at iPad Rehab to see if Jessa (the owner) would recommend sending it in. After all the problems people are encountering with "genius" bars for servicing, I wonder if I should even bother taking it to Apple. Any suggestions appreciated. This device has been stellar until just recently.

I am a musician as well and unresponsive screen made my 2017 iPad Pro unusable for viewing scores and very frustrating to use in general. I guess the “solution” is not to use iPads produced since 2017. I tried to repair it, even bought the same model again, but to no avail.

We have 2 IPP 12.9 version 1 from 2015. I think it was ios 11 and early 12 that had stuttering and touch problems on both. But latter ios 12 and ios 13 have been rather good. So good that we have no reason to upgrade our 4 year old ipads. We love em.

I went to Apple "Genius" bar and they denied replacement or fix (out of warranty). So Apple is no help anymore. Hopefully your shop will fix the issue (probably needs a replacement of touch screen if possible). Please keep us posted!

I've been suffering from this on my 2015 12.9" model for about half a year. Sometimes the problem completely goes away for 10-20 minutes, only to return after that. A real PITA.

Completely cleaning the screen and/or manually disconnecting / "Forget"ting the Pencil doesn't help. My iPad is in pristine physical conditions - I've never dropped it. Runs on the latest iOS version. I've 2-3 times set up the iPad as brand new, not restoring anything from any kind of a backup. Didn't help either.

I found out this isn't the first time apple did this. they had the same design flaw in several models of iphone 6. Google touch disease to find it. In the same manner they kept lying and insisting there is no issue until they couldn't do it anymore.

Exactly :(

My 2nd generation iPad Pro 12.9" is becoming unusable too. Why hasn't apple acknowledged this and created an extended warranty repair program on this? I've never had a problem with any of my other touch devices, and I love my iPad pro, but I'm getting to the point where I can't use it as well as I could. My loss is essentially in the center. Is that about the same with everyone else?

HELP! BTW, I don't see "Touch to wake" at all in accessability... where is it? Yes, latest version of iPad OS.

Thanks.

Some exciting news! I think I found the source of the problem and the solution. I don’t want egg on my face, so I will say it again, I **think** I've found the source of the problem. I will need your help to confirm it.

First, make sure you are having the same touch issue commonly described here on a iPad Pro 2nd Gen 12.9. Specifically, you touch something actionable on the screen and nothing happens. You’ll often get an auditory feedback when you type, but nothing shows up on the screen. Eventually you’ll get a response after several tries, but sometimes you will have to reorient the screen, touch another location on the screen or kill the app. If you’re having the same symptoms, then this might work for you.
The solution is very simple, but I don’t know if many of you can live with it. Are you ready......drum roll.....

DELETE THE YOUTUBE APP!!!

That’s it. Will the problem go away 100%? Not really, but at least 95%. I occasionally get a key press drop, but not nearly as often as before. The performance is also much zippier. I was wondering if the iPad Pro was overhyped and even considered downgrading. Now, however, I am seeing significant speed improvements over my old iPad 4.

Try this solution and report back. You may also want to restart your iPad for good measure just to clear out all the evil YouTube bits and bytes that may be still lurking in the system. This might explain why some people don’t have this problem while others do. You’ll have to watch YouTube from the browser, which really *****.

Unfortunately it doesn't help in the long run, see my answer in a parallel thread.

Nope. Didn’t make a difference at all for me.

After a long term test of 6+ months I‘m very certain that the problem is with the „tap to wake“ feature. While it was activated I constantly had the problems. Then I deactivated it and I didn‘t experience any issues for over 6 months. Today tried to reactivate tap to wake and almost instantly got the screen freeze back. I already had the same problem with my ipad pro 12.9 1st gen, which was the reason I bought the 3rd gen...

Good! But unfortunately from my experience (and all the reports I have seen on these forums for the past two years this problem exists) all these software switches are coincidental. A lot of folks tried switching Bluetooth and WiFi on/off, tap to wake, various connection settings, pencil, Accessibility options, Pro Motion, Factory Reset, Network Reset, restore from backup, cleaning iPad, rotating, putting at different angles. Using different Apple genuine chargers, backside protectors (I don’t have any screen protectors), tweaking almost all Settings on the iPad and removing/installing different applications, using different versions of iOS.

Nothing helps in the long run :(

I've just sent my 2017 12.9 off to Apple since the screen was both regularly not responding and now has a light bleed issue down one side. I hope for £560 I get more than just a replacement screen that fails again after 6 months.

I have seemingly always had this issue, but intermittently, on my 2017 iPad Pro 12.9 inch. But it does seem even worse under iOS 13.4.

Rebooting can help. Avoiding multitouch while tapping or typing can help (that is, do not hold it by the bezel, but hold it only from the underside, and have only one finger touching the screen at a time).

I should’ve returned it when it was under warranty, but it was (and is) intermittent, and I was thinking maybe just a software issue.

Oh well.

does Apple ever have warranty mercy in cases like that? That would be risky for them. :-(

Should have responded earlier. I did contact iPad Rehab soon after my post, but got email back that they wouldn't be able to repair / fix the issues. The device works fine 95% of the time, but I'm afraid to rely upon it at critical times (such as in a concert performance situation). That is too bad, as the main reason I forked over all the money for a top line iPad Pro was to use in situations like that. It was fine the first year or so, then began exhibiting sporadic problems with non-touch response. If I ever get another tablet, it won't be the more expensive iPad Pro - might possibly look into Samsung top-end tablets. The cheaper iPads would be fine by me for non-critical use such as watching movies, etc., which is about all I do with my iPad Pro anymore.

Well my replacement has been shipped but going by the new serial number it seems they found a 2yr old gen 2 in the warehouse to send me.

Would have been cheaper to get a replacement from CEX. Looking forward to it to start malfunctioning within the next 3 months. 🙄

Mine started having intermittent touch issues after installing IOS 13.5.1. Anyone else? I’ve tried the full factory reset and restore from backup. That seems to work for a day or so. But then it always comes back.
