So given the next iPhone's probable lack of design changes, does it mean it'll be even more rock solid?
I knew buying a SE was the way to go. It may have a small screen but I can wear it in a rip-offs case attached to my belt, without bending it. Apple support is more non-support.

I've had this issue - unresponsive screen - periodically since I got my 6 in 2014 and my 6s+ in 2015. I've been waiting till near the end of my warranty to get my phone replaced.

Glad to know it's widespread.
Starting to think that while the gray bar might be the major symptom, maybe its indicative other types of screen problems that show in other ways. The multi touch on my 6 has always been buggy....kinda sluggish. My stock text app also freezes about 50% of the time when going from portrait to landscape mid text. I know that last is most likely software, but even after a warranty swap it continued. And it isnt jailbroken or anything like that. All garden app store apps.

If it's only a 'sticker' ... i need much more proof than that, since it would have affected everyone over time..

Just to try an isolate whats been 'changed' compared to previous models is no proof of anything..

Even though it may help or weaken, it still doesn't prove why all phones are not affected. If its a faulty chhip, then ya ok,, that is someting, but any thing other like protective-ness?

I don't by it..... Because its in all 6 models.. and only affects some customers..

Mine has been working fine the day i got it.

So you don't believe it because it hasn't happened to you [yet]?

Yea this sucks...My Iphone 6+ died last week with the graybar of death, square trade tried to fix it twice, got a cash settlement but not enough to cover a new one...Google phone is in my future, no more expensive Iphones they lost me as a customer.
I chose a Nexus 6P for a variety of reasons.

It's my fourth and finest quality Nexus phone. Android Marshmallow 6.0.1 is simply stellar. Fast, fun, highly reliable and smooth, I do prefer it over iOS 9.3.4 on my iPhone 6S Plus which is my secondary smartphone.

$840 iPhone vs $475 Nexus makes it that much
sweeter. I won't be buying another iPhone.

As the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus approach their second birthday, a growing number of users are suffering from what appears to be a latent manufacturing issue that presents as a gray flickering bar at the top of the screen and a display that's unresponsive or less responsive to touch.

In a new blog post and video, repair site iFixit says a number of third-party repair outlets have seen iPhone 6 and 6 Plus models affected by the bug, which appears to be very common. STS Telecom owner Jason Villmer says he sees faulty iPhone 6 and 6 Plus models multiple times a week, while another repair tech in Louisiana sees up to 100 iPhone 6 and 6 Plus devices that don't respond well to touch.

iFixit is calling the problem "Touch Disease," and says Apple appears to be aware of the issue based on dozens of complaints on Apple's support forum, but isn't "doing anything about it." Multiple people who brought their iPhones to Apple Stores were told that Apple doesn't recognize it as an issue and nothing could be done as their iPhones were out of warranty.

Putting pressure on the display of an affected iPhone or twisting the device appears to reverse the issue for a short period, but the gray bar returns and touch functionality grows worse and worse until the touchscreen stops functioning entirely.

Replacing the display doesn't work as the problem is said to be caused by the touchscreen controller chips soldered to the logic board of the phone, and it's possible the damage is caused by the same structural design flaw that caused the major "Bendgate" controversy.According to iFixit, the only way to fix the problem is to replace the iPhone, replace the logic board, or replace the Touch ICs on the logic board, something Apple's in-house repair staff is not able to do. iFixit recommends users who are experiencing early symptoms of Touch Disease -- an intermittently non-functional touch screen or hints of a gray bar -- get their iPhones replaced outright if they're still under warranty.

For those without a warranty, iFixit suggests taking an affected iPhone 6 or 6 Plus to an electronics repair shop able to replace the chips. Apple doesn't approve of third-party repairs, but it may be the only solution until the problem is officially acknowledged by the company.

The iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus are not affected by the same issue as Apple strengthened the body and changed the position of the Touch IC chips in those devices.

[doublepost=1472194062][/doublepost]This issue with my 6+ was the last straw. CrApple was only willing to replace that phone for $400, and all I would get was the same crappy phone with the same design flaw.
I did a mistake by admitting that the issue started after the phone fell from desk onto a carpet. I still had my headphones in, so they got disconnected and that slowed the fall a bit as well. Further, the phone was in a good protective case. No single scratch nor dent on the phone, absolutely no crack on the screen. The phone was in protective case since day 1, so it did look brand new. Just the issue with flickering screen and unresponsive touch. Brought it to crapplecare, they found nothing wrong, but the "repair" would cost $400. I sold it for that much online instead (described the issue, etc, the transaction was in person) and bought LG G4 for $100. Happy ever since. The 6+ was the last time I wasted $1200 on any phone. Its a consumable device, with very high risk of being damaged. Further, CrApple has a history of design flaws in their phones... I don't see myself buying anymore crapple products.

That's what I though but no update, even after a clean install, has fixed it. I don't get the grey bar but the screen becomes completely unresponsive and other times I have a similar issue to you. My 6s+ sometimes has trouble switching back to portrait mode from landscape. I have genius bar appointment tomorrow- we'll see what they say.

Ah, this is what 'Touch Disease' looks like. That's distracting.

this is why I get the nagging feeling to not update to the latest iOS version, however irrational I'm being. if something like this happens to my 6+ I'll just stop buying iPhones.

I have this problem on my 6+ (still under warranty) but since i drop it a couple of times (clearly you can see it on each side of the phone, screen is perfect), i'm not sure if Apple will replace it at an Apple store.

I would bring it in while you can. worst that can happen is they say no. but generally they don't care if there are scratches.

I just had my iPhone 6 Plus replaced because of this. Took it to my local Apple Store and it was replaced without any issues.

For the last few weeks my 6+ (bought on launch) touchscreen becomes intermittently unresponsive to touch.

I tried removing the case, hard reboot, and finally backed it up and did a full reset. Still has the unresponsive problem daily. It's never been in my back pocket and isn't bent.

Finally come on to macrumors to see if there's any advice and look at the thread I find. I don't have any of the gray bar issues though.

Since I didn't get AppleCare am I S*** out of luck?

I've had every iPhone since the 3gs and have always loved them. Paying $300 to fix this sure would put a bad taste in my mouth.

Has any US customers had luck getting a replacement for just the unresponsive touch (and no gray bars)? I'm not even sure how to replicate the problem as there's no rhyme or reason as to when it pops up.

Thanks for any advice. :)

There’s more here too…..

It will be interesting to see how Apple handles this problem. Based on past experience, they will just stonewall it and not admit that there is a huge problem, until a class action is started. It would be such a marketing coup if they admitted the problem and offered to replace any defective phone. Oh wait...sorry it was a dream.

They’ll deny it until they have no choice I think. B*stards!

Agreed, the initial bend may be visually minor but it could have put stresses on the logic board to an extent that damage is incurred

Simply flexing the phone could cause intermittent or complete failure of the solder joint, though. Going to the stiffer 7000-series aluminum alloy from the 6000-series aluminum alloy used in the 6 might explain why the 6S models haven't shown this problem. Then again, the 6 models are a year older...and there could be a lot of other things going on...but the theory makes sense.

No question, I'm actually happy I have a SE, its a bit thicker and more solid. There's way too much flex and ability to bend in the 6 plus (Which I came from).

"all together" => "altogether."

Read a book, guys. ;)

Careful, I got suspended for pointing out spelling. In the world of Macrumours, bad speling is all together and holey exceptable.
[doublepost=1472296724][/doublepost]My girlfriend is currently having issues with her iPhone (not this. Keeps becoming unresponsive and turning itself off) and had issues with her last iPhone. What amazes me is she's straight back in the Apple Store looking at replacements. She won't even consider anything else.

This is really starting to gain traction now. Maybe that will help (not gonna hold my breath).

Go to Apple store 2 days ago and swapped my 6+ for another one (my 6+ was bent and screen not responding)...

Now the new one have the grey bar at the top of the screen. Honestly Apple need to extend the warranty of the 6+.

Need to book another appointment. I love to waste my time.

It's time to build iPhone like the early ThinkPads - bye bye problems.
[doublepost=1472308952][/doublepost]... and just like all the hoo-haa around error 53, in a few months time this will all be forgotten about and in the distant past, and no one will remember it. Hype and hysteria are transient flashes in the pan. Meh.

To be fair, I am sure product failure has to reach a certain theshold before it is considered prominent enough to allow out of warranty replacement or repair (without cost to the buyer). I just had my motherboard in my 2011 MBP replaced. It was well out of warranty, but the failure rate was high enough that they deemed it repairable for free for anyone having the issue.

I am in the same situation. Occurs intermittently. No gray bar. Usually solved with either a closing of the app (via double-click and swipe up) or a reset.

I doubt they would help me, I've dropped the thing a number of times and my screen is a spiderweb of cracks. I have AppleCare but they've already replaced the screen for me once (via refurb phone replacement).
