if you have a kid, get a big giant rubber case for your ipad. the smart cover is great for those who don't need kid protection.

Oh that definitely sucks :(

I'm single with no children so smart covers would be perfect for me (just to protect the screen, nothing more) but I'd be wary anything not heavily padded if a little one was playing with it.

I certainly do. A 3 1/2 year old son. And he is never allowed to have time on my iPad 2 (and my previous iPad 1) without being directly supervised and in an area where I know that if it should be dropped, that it won't do any significant damage (like the living room wih carpet floor). I know how rough he can be on some things. My daughter who is older was the same way.

I let my kids and everyone "live" but when it comes to expensive items like this, I am cautious. Not everyone can take the chance and should something bad happen, just go to the store and throw down another 499+ for a replacement.

To the OP, I hope apple cuts you a break and replaces it for you for free. My wife had a co worker last year drop her 4 day old iPhone 4 and busted the screen. Apple wouldn't replace it.

Seemed like you were giving the guy a hard time. Perhaps not. Me, I've quit buying anything, that I will come to "need," that I can't take the hit to replace if the kids break it. I have 5, 6, boys, and 16, a girl. They're all accident-prone in their own ways. The girl is more likely to "borrow" something without permission, but also less likely to have an accident with it. The boys know not to take anything off my desk without supervision. With the exception of a little toy action figure from the Resistance video game franchise, they honor that. But then there's always that one time...

I usually sit with my younger kids using something like that, but then you're called away for a moment or something. I sympathize with the guy: his gut was probably to tweak over it, but he suppressed that so the kid could have a good time with the iPad. I get that. It's no fun tweaking out all the time. It is after all just an iPad. In two years the iPad 2 won't have changed a wink but will be worth all of a hundred bucks.

sorry to hear that ... bring the little one when you go back to Apple (maybe they will show sympathy when they see the culprit)

good luck

I thought this reply was headed towards bringing the kid to Apple to see if they'd replace her. :D

maybe apple will replace it...i do agree the smart cover Isn't really effective.

I'd add that those with small kids may want to look for one of those third party warranties that covers accidental damage.

Why do people give £500 worth of tech to little kids to play with?

This isn't MyFirstLaptop you know...

My boy loves my iPad. So I got a second hand iPhone 3G and put all the apps on it for him so he has his own thing. He's 3. I don't trust a three year old with any cool stuff unless I'm holding it.

Terrible to hear! That being said, I don't think the new covers are designed to really protect it from anything more than basic, everyday wear and tear. At best it's a glorified screen protector with a fancy attachment mechanism. It won't prevent the wrath of kids, unfortunately.

Right, but you have to consider, this is a COVER not a case, it was never intended to protect it from drops nor is it a handle, this is a cover for keeping sharp objects from scratching the screen,

I'd say it's not even a cover -- the front magnets fail to stick, thereby folding over and exposing the screen, often enough that I wouldn't stick the iPad into a bag with other items without first putting the iPad into a sleeve. It's basically a portable stand that's convinient to carry because it's light and sticks to the iPad body. And if you look at it that way, it's the most portable iPad stand I've ever seen, and it works pretty well to hold up the iPad for typing and landscape viewing. Just don't expect it to protect ANYTHING, including the screen.

That's exactly what I did with mine. I bought an extended two year warrantee that includes accidents. I had a coupon code that I think was ipad40 and it brought it down to $77 (for the 32G). Hope it works out for you, I'm so sorry to hear this. :(

I've already let my three children, ten, eight and four along with husband they are NOT allowed around it.

Definitely take it back to Apple store, kid in tow, some stores goodwill replaced the ipad1 at launch. it's gonna happen with kids. no way any kid uses mine under a certain age unsupervised. and sitting only, no carrying around.

you probably have many other Moms this weekend sharing your pain.
apple should make kid-ready ipads, but any sturdy case would help.
good luck.
Apple should warn, 'the smart cases are too dumb for kids'. :(

I am not blaming Apple, the design, or the 5 year old girl. In the end its just $$$, and for those of you saying don't hand it to a child, you got to be kidding. That was one of thing thing Apple is pushing with the iPad. In fact children using it was in the video at the keynote.

I just wanted to warn everyone who bought a smart cover thinking it is "more than a case" as the first line of the descriptions says. If you want to do a little experiment to see what I am talking about, hold the iPad by the smart cover over your couch (only an inch or so) and just give it a little shake.

If it starts to slip out of your hands while the case is folded back... What is the first thing you are going to grab?

BTW I took it to the Apple store and wasn't expecting anything. They told me that it really isn't covered under warranty, but... They were willing to replace it. Unfortunately there aren't any in stock, and I don't have high hopes that when they finally do, I'll get the same offer. Oh well, lesson learned.

OP ... I do see Apple swapping it for you ... just go back when they have stock and be humble and polite. They are really nice to people like you that have a good attitude ... good luck

Strong Like Bull

The smart cover is a novelty item, not a shock protection item. Plus it connects with magnets that can very easily detach.

The magnets holding the hinge to the iPad 2 itself are quite strong. I was surprised at how much effort it took to detach the cover, and at how quickly and strongly the cover attached to the iPad.

That said, I'm leaning against the Apple cover (but for other reasons than weak magnets).

Yep, it's called Smart Cover and not Smart Protector.

Imagine if they have a Smart Protector where the device will know it's falling to its death but then an airbag pops out.
