The OP highlighted an issue that's been on my mind as well.
I have a 2-1/2 year old that absolutely LOVES my iPad 1. It's in a Yoobao Magic case that provides good protection against drops. (This case is nearly identical to the Marware CEO Hybrid.)
I've decided to upgrade to the iPad 2. I can really benefit from the performance bump for the work functions I use it for. I will be selling my iPad 1 to subsidize.
I REALLY want to use it with the Smart Cover. It's an awesome cover and one of the things that makes the iPad 2 great. But I'll be substantially reducing the drop protection of the device. Heck, there will almost be NO drop protection with this cover. I'll put a clear skin on the back to eliminate scratching, and likely get a sleeve to carry it in (once they are available), but when my little one is using it, all it will take is one slip and it will break. And we happen to have tile floor throughout the entire downstairs except the living room rug.
Right now my solution is to only let her use my wife's iPad 1 from now on. She is not upgrading. I'm not sure in the long run this will cut it though. Part of me says to bite the bullet and get a "real" case for my new iPad 2, but that would be a bummer in many ways. It would add bulk. I want to get away from that.
And for everyone's info, I'm NOT interested in advice on whether I should or should not let my child use our iPads. She gets a lot of joy out of using it and she learns a lot. That makes me happy. It also allows us to keep her entertained during long drives and in restaurants. We don't overdo it. It is also another great use of the device and therefore adds to it's value to us. End of story on that subject.
