hahaha.

you think the smart cover is the reason the screen is cracked and not the fact that you let a child play with a $500 "toy"? wisen up.

apple even told you it's for kids? thats your logic here?

I was afraid of that. My original iPad is built like a brick house. I like that. The glass on my iPhone definitely seems thinner than on my original iPhone. I figured they had to trim down the glass to get some of the weight and thickness out of it.

I owned an original iPad and yes you can tell the iPad 2 has thinner materials. Even the aluminum back feels to be of a much lighter thickness. I appreciate that when I am holding it, but it feels a lot more fragile then the original did.

Jeez there are some real douchebags in this forum.

to the op - sorry for your loss, I can't even imagine, but bravo for not trying to pull a fast one.

to the whiners - the op never complained or blamed anyone for anything, they just shared an apple related story in an apple forum, calm down and take your meds.

Weren't you a child at one time or were you born fully grown?

Just because we were all kids once doesn't mean we all have to like kids or want kids! :D

That said, there's no excuse for being rude to those who have them with posts like the one you quoted either.

thank you AAFES for the Keep It New Program!! $179 for 3yrs protects against anything.. dropping, dust, dirt.. shoot I need to ask what is it they don't protect against.

So the smart cover really doesn't protect the device. When the little one was using it this morning, it started to slip out of her hands. She was left with the smart cover detached from the iPad. The iPad was left on the floor with a nice crack in the screen.

When I bought it I did think that the "cover" wasn't very good protection. My fault for not following through with this thought. This is just a warning for those who have little ones.

iPad 2 = amount of days used.
Epic win for Apple, now you have to buy another one!

Weren't you a child at one time or were you born fully grown? I know I broke stuff when I was a kid... heck I still break things.

No one was dumb enough to give me breakable things early in life. From that poin on, I became very good at fixing broken things.

I stand by my children comment.

Not sure how you'd blame the Smart Cover? If you had a clear screen protector on the screen of the iPad, would you expect it to survive a fall because the screen protector was on it? That's all the Smart Cover is basically.

Well the good thing is that hopefully the people who hate children do not and will not have them. The worse thing that can happen is people who feel that way and then end up having kids.

First off, I suspect that we will start hearing more & more stories like this about the cover for the iPad2. Anything that snaps off & on this easily can't be seriously used as protection. I know Apple is not really pitching it as such, but it is a cover nonetheless & some level of protection is implied. Personally, I am anxiously awaiting the secondary market to release a ton of great cases that offer real protection.

Second, if you do not have kids, you need to refrain from responding in this thread with dumb ass statements like "You are a moron for giving your new iPad to a kid!" or "What do you expect when you give an iPad to a child?" I have two kids age 4 & 1. I understand that stuff happens, occasionally to nice & expensive stuff, and the OP seems to be taking that attitude. I never thought that they were coming here to complain that the device is not kid-proof or kid-friendly. I read the OP as saying that the magnetic smart cover isn't really all that smart.

You must have had a very sad upbringing in your nerf lined home. Did your mother make you wear a safety helmet until you were 10 & keep the training wheels on your princess bike until you were 15? I bet the first time you ventured out of your protective bubble at 18 and fell & skinned your knee you cried for a month because you had never experienced such horrible pain before.

Perhaps your loathing of children has something to do with your inability to find someone of the opposite sex to actually want to have a kid with you.

All correct, except for the part where the OP had to comment on the smart cover not protecting the iPad. To me that sounds like blame. The smart cover is not supposed to protect the iPad from dropping it. What comes around goes around, i guess...

I really like the smart cover but it does make me really nervous. The iPad is so thin and feels slippery and fragile. Plus every time I put the smart cover in typing mode I get nervous it's going to get scratched by whatever I'm typing on. I'm either going to get a sleeve to put the whole thing in, a sheild for the back or a new case all together.

Ouch. That's a major bummer. I use a Portenzo case which, besides looking great, does seem to provide a decent amount of protection. I know dodo is already taking orders for their iPad 2 case and Portenzo will soon (as will a zillion others of course). I know that doesn't help you at this point but ouch. Really sorry to hear that... :(

rdrr writes an intelligent honest post about his experience.

Then in typical juvenile fashion, a flood of critical, judgmental, outright rude comments come in from every direction.

You Are Morons!

Not true. I don't blame Apple, in fact in my first statement, I said I was going against my better judgment in buying the smart cover rather than a case. Because of having little ones around. I only laid out the statement that when it will slip what is the first thing you are going to grab, as a warning to what I saw happen with my own eyes.

This was a warning to all of those people who thought for better or worse that the smart cover will protect against a fall. Nothing more nothing less.

Yeah my kids are 5, 4 and 2. They all use my iPad 1 (in a crazy over-sized rubber 1337 Incipio case) and it's got some hairline scratches on the screen, but has survived a lot of abuse in the first year.

iPad 2 will be only for me (and my wife) and will only have a smart cover (maybe a film on the back) but it'll be off limits to them. I've always kind of resented nearly doubling the weight and thickness of my iPad with that huge case, but I'm happy for the hand-eye coordination, problem solving and reading skills they've picked up.

I agree with the OP, the smart cover isn't for a kids - but the iPad certainly is.

There are threads out there that give links to 3rd party insurance coverage...Get it!! Hindsight is impeccalbe so atleast OP knows now.

I've read in another thread that they have it 40% off today at a place called square trade. Call them 1-877-900-7238 and get your coverage. There is a certain code to use to get the 40% off which = something like $79 for a 2yr coverage.

Don't take the iPad back..get the insurance and make a claim a little bit after purchasing. These things are waaaaaay too much just to have to buy another!!

Good Luck

I don't have kids but I am a clutz :)

I really don't care to pay for insurance and feel I can self insure so I'm not buying any damage protection. I did buy the smart cover but also bought a sleeve for my iPad. So when I carry it around, I put it in the sleeve.

The other day though I was walking around with it while using it and it did start to slip and for a second, I was only holding onto the smart cover. The smart cover held long enough for me to regain my grip. So I just know to be a little more careful.
