Why, is the next OS going to smoke crack and drown in a bathtub? Honesty, WTF is the connection here?
If Apple thinks of places in California for the name of their next OS, I don't see why they couldn't choose for things like those mountains or other spots there. This topic is about guessing the name, so you should respect everyone's opinion here. In this topic there aren't any right or wrong answers. There is a connection anyway, unlike the one you made now with your 'smoking crack' and 'bathtub drowning'.

OP suggested the name 'Whitney'. You don't get the smoking crack and bathtub drowning reference given that 'brilliant' name suggestion?

It's a mountain in California.

Lived in Cali for over 20 years, even spent a lot of time in Half Moon Bay, never heard of any of these places. Apple should pick a better naming convention, or at least better names.

Then I would suggest that you didn't know or see enough of California to know more about these. That's a fault of yours, not Apple's.

BL.

I would suggest you're wrong. I've been on hikes all over the northern half of the state, for example.

Then again, if you have been all over the state, and you still do not know of any of these landmarks, how is that a fault of Apple's, when you surely haven't studied or been to enough places in California to know where they are?

Disclaimer: I live in Sacramento, have been for 10 years, and I know about Mavericks, Whitney, Shasta, Zzyzx, and others.

Indeed. Thanks for the support! ;)

I'm guessing it will be called whatever apple names it.. why does it matter what its called as long as it works?

X = Reference to Unix (at least IMO) --> Next version number probably will be OS X 10.10 or OS X 11.0 ( I wouldn't mind 10.A :D) - There won't be weird OS XI!

Why not Mac OS 10.10, Mac OS 10.11? Apple has done that before. 9 is not "the end".

For example, Tiger had a version 10.4.10 and 10.4.11.

Apple doesn't care much about version numbers - it's only us geeks even mentioning that. For normal people, 10.9 is simply "Mavericks".

OS-X denotes OS-10. It doesn't denote the subversion i.e. .4.5.6.7.8 and now 9. They are all 'codenamed'.

Apple has kept a strict system of calling things by name and I think X was a stage which looked cool. System 1,2,3,4,5,6,7(7.6),8 and 9 all re-dated X, the roman numeral for 10.

Apple is an English speaking company, and originated in english countries. Despite being 'Designed in California, Made in China', I can't see then using Xi (pronounced Sigh or Sy) Or even the possibility of the greek alphabet for 'x'.

Apple like to keep things simple, and seeing as people these days are less 'computer illiterate' than they were back in the day, I can't see them using something complex like the 14th or 15th letter of the greek alphabet (or a Chinese word).

They might even drop the whole erm.. either 'numerological' or 'mathematical 1+1, +1 to the previous' approach, they might even drop it seeing as Steve Jobs (RIP) has been superseded!

It's literally in the wind as to what might happen!

Here are some inspirational Californian places that have a good marketing sound to them.

OS X Hyperion (tree)
OS X Sierra
OS X Yosemite
OS X Muir (woods)
OS X Trinity (Alps)
OS X Tahoe
OS X Sonoran
OS X Headwaters
OS X Pinnacles
