IMHO government mandates on ports will only stifle innovation. Why would anyone try to make something better than a USB-C when they have a massive hill to climb in order for it to be implemented.
If something better comes, it can be integrated or the base for the next USB, like they did with Thunderbolt. USB C is just a connector type that can support multiple protocols. And when it reaches its limit, a new better standard connector will be developed. But the good thing is that it will be used for everyone, that’s why it’s a standard.

The big question is: why do the guys so worried about innovations being stiffed don’t complain about Lighting still having USB 2.0 speeds in 2022? It’s hilarious

They should have transitioned everything to USB-C when iPhone X came out following the USB-C adaption for Macs. The fact that they didn’t and dragged their feet for years offering bizarre transfer speeds in the age of 4K and ProRes is mind boggling.

I’ll never understand it. So many on here love to carry water for a trillion dollar company.

I mean … Lightning is 10 years old and Apple hasn’t done anything with it ever since so. They didn’t even bother to add anything above usb 2.0 speeds

Obviously.

My point is that under a government mandate to use port-X no single company will put any effort into making something unique, different and better because the chance they will get it accepted as the new mandate is a daunting task with only a tiny chance for return on investment. Thus innovation is stifled.

Furthermore, when has 1 size fits all ever worked out well?
I see, so you want us go back to 1980s to 1990s where each computer is incompatible with another, and even computers produced by the same company is not compatible with another. But, instead of incompatible computers, we have incompatible ports and cables. Maybe we should have a dedicated cable for iPhone 14 Pro Max and one for iPhone 14 Plus. That’ll be nice.
Just because something works doesn't mean it is the best implementation.

I am very sure that there is a better way to implement the common household plug in 2022 but to my point no one will ever put any thought into it because it will probably never change.
“Best implementation” only exist within context. What’s best 10 years ago wont be the best today. In terms of the power plug, sure there MIGHT be better ones but that one better be much better than what we have today in every single way, otherwise no one bother.

I am so tired of hearing about this but it’s always still years away.

Sick of digging for different cables — A to lightning, C to lightning, A to C. Can’t wait for the majority of electronic devices to just use C so I can carry the same cable for laptops, phones, speakers, etc.

This whole legislation has me so conflicted.

On the one hand, I’m all in on USB-C and love standardisation. On the other hand, it certainly is a pretty “meh” standard that is not as future proof as people say. Yes, for data transfer and power it sure is. But the form is already outdated. It’s thicker than lightning and as such is ALREADY a size limitation for phones as it is quite big relative to phone width - mostly from the fact that it is a female collector. I don’t support lightning, in fact I hate it, but… the thinness has actually enabled iPhones to get much slimmer.

But then Apple goes ahead and slaps in on every other worthless thing; keyboards, mice, earphones, etc. For no reason other than MFI licensing and locking you into an ecosystem. And I’m glad the legislation does address a whole suite of devices and isn’t just targeting the ONE phone manufacturer going proprietary.

But them again, we also see where Apples proprietary cables are really actually quite innovative. MagSafe, MagSafe 2, MagSafe iPhone versions, watch inductive charger, heck lightning itself might be old now but it WAS an innovation at the time. We will see the innovation die off now.

I am surprised, but glad Apple is finally bringing usb-c to the iPhone Pros next year. Many pro photographers use the iPhone as a serious camera… or at least a secondary camera to shoot spontaneous photos or b roll video with while traveling. It’s light & always in your pocket. But offloading huge photos & 4k video is slooooow with the lightning connector. USB-C will be most welcome for us. And for those that just like the convenience of carrying around less chargers & cables for their devices. My iPad Pro & iPhone are my two favorite content creating travel tools. Will be nice when they can use the same fast usb-c charger/cable. 👍🏼

That would be awesome

It will be so much more convenient to only have to bring USB-C cables with me when traveling instead of both USB-C and lightning

Having everything using the same charger is definitely the way to go - looking forward to the iPhone getting USB-C as well
Never understood this, how do you do if you need to charge more things at the same time? And if you brings with you more cables, what’s the matter if some of it are usb c and others lightning?
