I prefer lightning connector's physical design and would have liked seeing it become the standard but Apple did absolutely nothing with it. They only created it to serve as another obstacle.

IMHO government mandates on ports will only stifle innovation. Why would anyone try to make something better than a USB-C when they have a massive hill to climb in order for it to be implemented.
Call me when anybody needs more than 40 Gbps transfer speeds and 100W charging and then you might have a sound argument. I would bet money that USB-C will be the last “standard” type cable out there until the actual wireless future is exists.

If Apple has been using USB 2.0 up until this point, and you’ve somehow been content with that, in what wold does any further cable innovation matter to you?

But yeah, blame anybody but the world’s most valuable company, being the ONLY COMPANY releasing $1k+ devices with a TWENTY-TWO YEAR-OLD USB SPEC.

That train (USB-C) has left the station quite some time ago and Apple is still in the station, could certainly have done better.
And for moving to all wireless - unless you can get the losses down to <5%, bad move. Think about 100M iPhones charged daily and the loses add up to an enormous amount

Is Gurman implying AirPods Pro 3 are coming 2024? Or is he just guessing based on the EU law?

Much more logical train of thought is the AirPods Pro 2nd gen get a new case alongside the iPhone 15.

This newsletter is generally a whole lot of nothing. This week’s is no different.

“Apple to update accessories mandated by law to update.”

I’m absolutely fine with Lightning, it’s a solid connection and has served me well. If they go portless and improve dust and water resistance, great. But I don’t care about quicker data transfer. And I sure don’t cry about having to carry an extra cable.

And IF they’re deciding to go portless, why only switch briefly to accommodate the whiners and to be “the standard” for a year or two?

And thanks, that’s exactly what I do with my devices, have fun. I don’t constantly complain.

👊😙👍

And yet here you are complaining about people complaining.

Going port-less would be such a downgrade in almost every area.

Desiring to have standardisation on charging isn't 'whining'. It's asking Apple to simplify. Plenty will find it fantastic when they never are unable to charge devices because they've forgotten a cable, because carrying one cable will charge all their devices. Not to mention how frustratingly slow lighting is to transfer data.

Yes, because USB-D is right around the corner, and users are starting to get fed up with the gigabit wired transfer speeds and fast charging.

\s

Also, if you’ve been fine with Apple sticking with Lightning for this long, why would you care if Apple stuck with USB-C for 20 years after Lightning is gone?

Yeah this 'stiffing innovation' argument is ironic given that the same people are apparently fine with lighting running at USB 2 speeds!

Many vendors came out with 'multi-species' cables that had one connector on one end, and three 'leashed' pop-on connectors that plugin to the other end to allow for it to be used with a variety of different devices. My experience was that the Lightning end was always burned out, and I'd have to snip it off because it wouldn't work with so many contacts burned out. Yeah, adapters don't last. The Lightning connector is rather poorly designed. I have never seem a USB cable burned out, and have tossed at least a dozen Lightning cables hopelessly burned out. Apple SHOULD dump Lightning. Dump it now...

I’ve never seen one of those hydra cables that I’d be willing to plug into my expensive devices.

there seems to be two types of people in these USB C threads. Those that think Apple is their friend and those that don’t.

Apple was literally part of the team that created USB-C. But somehow USB C is this evil cord that makes them uncomfortable to move away from slow ass USB 2.0. Why is USB C a boogey man to you?

And their only response is usually go port less (which carries a ton more issues than usb 2.0) or stick with lightning.

Their “logic” makes no sense. But continue to downvote me. Like it’s some form of metric all because your insecurities are all out on full display.

Why are you so against progress?

But it doesn’t matter. Apple WILL go USB C due to this (thank you EU) and these fanatics will fall right in line and love how one cord works for everything. But you won’t ever see an apology of their unruly attacks on others nor admit how it’s better now with a singular and faster data speed cord.

It's called being a standard. When everything uses it, if there is a need to change it, it will change, otherwise we don't need 10 different connectors for devices.

When was the last time the AC outlet in your home was upgraded to something different? Aren't you happy there aren't 10 different types of residential AC outlets in your country?
But then every country has their own standards and we have to bring adapters every time we travel :)

In preparation for portless, wireless only devices, Apple needs an alternative to iCloud backup.

Full, local backups of iOS devices need to be possible without a Mac or iTunes PC on your local network. Maybe add Time Machine functionality through the Files app.

We're going to end up having a device with two ports. Apple's and Mandated port. Dumb. o_O

I have a usb4 cable capable of charging up to 240W. I have a battery that accepts up to 140W. Cable supports this. I use it with all of my devices including MacBook and iPad. Works extremely well, except for iPhone and airpods.

It’s time for apple to move on from lightning. Also, why is a flagship phone costing more than $1000 limited to usb2.0 speeds in 2022? Time for apple to move on.

Lots of USB-C to USB-A cables will be bought as many of us have aftermarket car stereos that use USB-A for a wired/Carplay connection. Hopefully car stereo companies switch to USB-C ports as well.

that makes no sense at all.

Lightning on iPhone is a female connector with male cable. USB C ports are male with female connectors.

they are totally different. if apple were to keep the lightning port they'd need to make a USB cable that had connectors on the outside of a USB C cable. if they made a USB C port they'd need to use a lightning cable with that was bigger with a section for the USB connector to insert into.

spot the difference (usb c is the top, lightning is the bottom):

It wouldn’t make sense to do it, but Apple thinks different.
Could engineer a connector that retracts the USB-C receptacle by mechanic pressure upon insertion of a Lightning plug and vice versa lock the middle receptacle in place when the female USB-C connector enters.
Though it wouldn’t technically be USB-C spec, potentially takes up more internal space and it could be prone to failure. It’s just theoretically possible.

A more typical Apple approach could be portless (bye bye DFU mode?) or USB-C and offering a $10 (20?) dongle for your old cables.

How can a portless, wireless charging design be any different than keeping lightning?

You still need a separate wireless cradle or charging puck with cable to hook up to a charging brick, whatever end is on it.

How would that get around the EU requirements? It still does not have USB-C.

Apple's greed on lightning licensing has put them in this pickle. They pushed USB-C hard on the laptops but kept everything else lightning, where it could have been USB-C for several years now.
