Why would a charging mat need to have a OS?
So it can expire after a few years and need to be replaced? Like series 0 Apple watches aren’t getting any more os upgrades?

This doesn’t feel like an Engineering-driven decision to me. It feels more like Marketing is driving Engineering to overcomplicate something simple.

Like putting tapwater in a bottle and charging 1000% markup. Crazy, right? Nope. Not as long as Marketing can convince people to pay more for the inconvenience.

Wasn't this feature panned when Android implemented it? Will Apple's implementation be magical? Is there anyone actually waiting for this? I'm curious as to how many will actually buy it seeing as it will most likely not be worth the asking price.

According to the article:

“The AirPower charger is also more advanced than the current competition because it includes a custom Apple chip running a stripped down version of the iOS mobile operating system to conduct on-device power management and pairing with devices.”

This release is bizarre. It doesn't do anything any other $9 charger pad can, does it?

A charging pad running iOS? This thing is going to cost a fortune...

They’re probably going to charge more than an Apple TV for this, which is utter insanity.

The highest this thing could possibly be is $49.99. Anything beyond that is absurd for what this does.

Charges Watch and AirPods and at the same time as an iPhone.

Yes, some of us are waiting for this. :)
But that’s not really much, is it? Not like the amazing innovations Apple gave us in its creative heyday.

And really, this is just solving a problem of Apple’s own making. The Watch, AirPods and iPhone should’ve been compatible from the beginning.

It's "much"--that is, important/useful/desirable to me.

Speaking just for myself, my quota for amazing innovations is pretty much filled right now with my Watch, AirPods, iPad Pro and Pencil. Not to mention the sheer joy of using my nine-month old iMac (a good example of a "refined" design, as is my 8+ iPhone).

I'm happy to wait for a wireless charger.

Wait--were you not discussing WIRELESS chargers? What does hooking up a cable have to to with that? Or did you not read the thread?
Wireless charger still has a wire and in case of Apple Watch it is basically same as hooking up a cable. But I agree with you, this is outrageous, if i can't charge all my stuff on 1 charger my needs are not being met. How dare they? This is totally unacceptable. Life is so much worse without this charger.

A lot will depend on the price. Chargers are intrinsically boring, but they could still innovate on pricing?

$99 - forget it. $29.99 - and the crowd goes wild! (including me)

C’mon Apple. Make us all go wild again! Like the old days :D

Hopefully Apple has now learnt not to pre-announce products way in advance.

I can understand why they did so with the HomePod as they were trying to stop people from buying a similar system w/ Alexa built in.

Mind you, they ended up with egg on their face there as they ended up releasing a product that arguably wasn't yet ready. Karma, I guess.

But pre-announcing a product that is going to compete with $30 dollar charging mats but that has a version of iOS in it and is presumably going to cost something like $150-200? Ummm.

No other charger on the market can charge multiple phones and watch/air pods

So yes it’s different

Wireless charging for personal smart devices is the solution to the ultimate first world problem.

'That's it! EVERY night, I have to charge my Watch, iPhone, iPad, EarPods and my MacBook. I have to plug each of them in, one by one. What am I? Some sort of servant to my devices? I literally can't take it anymore!'

I mean we could be trying to solve all sorts of critical problems and making the world a better place.

You know, like making more & better animojis!

Do you not understand this product? It can charge multiple phones and/or Watch and AirPods. Wirelessly.

It's clearly not for you. As I said at the outset, I rejoice in your happiness with what you have.

How would you charge an apple watch with a link bracelet on this? it would be better if they had a flip up element for the apple watch.

I guess it's more that Apple felt there was little they could do to meaningfully differentiate the airport router from the rest of the competition. Airpower in comparison should offer greater utility.

Considering it is the only wifi access point that has never given me any issues, no matter what I throw at it, I think that alone should be enough to differentiate it from the pack.
