But will it be good enough? Will it be a "gateway" to AI for the millions that are not using an AI? Will Apple be able to do something novel given their access to the hardware. Is Apple behind, no doubt the answer is yes and they should be ashamed in my opinion but we are still very early in the race. There are ways that Apple can take a leadership position in the AI world without being the leader in AGI/ASI. All it really has to be is my portal into the AI and the gatekeeper for my information. How about an offload for big parts of the AI with their local NPUs, does anyone even take advantage of any local Apple NPUs which apple makes such a big deal over during the keynotes as of yet. early morning thoughts.

Their commitment to localised processing is laudable but ultimately there is only so much you can do on-device. Google's server-side photo editing is insanely good at removing people and objects, to the point that it has become another useful artists tool when creating digital works. Apple Intelligence on the other hand still only does a decent job 50% of the time at basic people removal, to the point you'd be better off just using the clone tool on Pixelmator and doing it yourself.

Other then generating fake homework papers, what can AI do?

AI can write a message without confusing “than” with “then”.

I implemented an AI-powered tool into an app to tell the visually impaired what they were looking at. It was for a college project years ago, so I can only imagine what they are capable of now.

I have used AI to generate 3D files (stl, obj, etc.), which is pretty nifty as building these files from scratch takes a LONG time.

You can also generate images, video, realistic-looking by the way, you can even ask it to create fully-rigged 3D characters that you can then use in animations, games, or film.

Despite the setback, Gurman notes that Apple is in the unique position of presiding over a vast ecosystem of tightly integrated devices, which gives it the advantage of being able to quickly deploy new technologies across its product line.

Except that they’ve been skimping on RAM so no, they can’t deploy it across the product line. It’s only available on the newest phones, and only in beta.

Apple should have woken up years ago, Siri has been a bad joke for a long time and it seems like they genuinely did not even realize it.

I’m waiting for the “wow” factor from google and meta. Let’s see what apple intelligence has to offer.

If the report isn’t some fictional work, I’m glad apple is honest about themselves.

Ai is a handy tool for problem solving. Last year I had a difficult task to figure out, I needed to merge a data sheet into Adobe Indesign and have it generate unique QR codes that when scanned would give the person scanning their contact details, basically a digital business card. Doing a data merge is no big deal, but creating the contact sheet correctly was difficult and scouring the internet and forums I could not find an answer. In the end I tried asking ChatGPT and it gave me the correct solution in less than a minute.

More recently we have a client bring in a pull up banner, this is a vinyl banner that goes into hardware. We had never seen the type brought in, it had a cartridge and we were not exactly sure how to open it without damaging it. No name brands or model numbers on the hardware. I took a picture, dropped it in ChatGPT and explained the problem. Again in less than a minute it said it looked like 1 of 2 brands. First one I checked out was indeed the correct one and had instructions on how to take it apart. AI will replace google search for help questions in my opinion. The info will improve and get better and better and you won't have other navigate through tons of webpages hoping to find someone who had the same issue and had asked this question before. These are small things, but incredibly helpful.

You called Siri "her" ;)

Apple's mentioned AI stuff isnt all generative... the summarise AI stuff is going to be useful at cutting content down.
It's not generative, it's reductive. And could be very useful in freeing up time.
The non-generative stuff is absolutely useful. I don’t mind them adding those features. But GenMoji and digital playground whatever? Pass.

2yrs is a generous, I'd say it's a bit more than that. Apple was caught fast asleep behind the wheel.

Maybe Apple will catch up soon-ish, as it seems like huge improvements in purely text-based AI models have become less common lately... it looks like generative video has been where all the big leaps have been this year. 🤓

So it's good news for Siri and the whole "rewrite text for me" features in Apple Intelligence, at least.

Apple Intelligence has a good chance to be a huge deal. Yes, Apple does social media very poorly, always has (but social media is awful so who cares), and doesn’t have its own LLM like ChatGPT but is farming that out to the best.

They do very well with ecosystem, privacy, and powerful on-device chips. No one else can compete in that area, not even close. Microsoft can’t, Google can’t, Meta can’t.

To the haters: Vast majority of people don’t use ChatGPT and other AI technologies the way you do. Apple will bring basically all of that to the normal people. It’s what Apple has done again and again.

Fairly certain they’re going to do very well with this. The FUD is just that. Doubling down on AAPL. This is not financial advice.

The whole world knows this.

Apple got caught in a panic when ChatGPT emerged out of nowhere, they probably knew rivals Samsung and Google were working on AI but I can guarantee Apple brushed it off until they were caught by the ChatGPT earthquake.

To be fair, it wasn't an expected earthquake, as evidenced by the sharp share price rises of AI-linked tech companies not long after.

But nevertheless it was an earthquake and Apple had done nothing, I repeat nothing, to reinforce the foundations, aka invest in AI. This is even more outrageous when you factor in how long they've had Siri baked into their products (Samsung killed off Bixby, etc). Siri has barely changed since it was introduced in 2011. Yes. 2011.

Now they are playing a desperate catch up and rushing something, anything, out without little care or thought. It is wholly embarrassing to release a suite of products with a cornerstone product Apple 'Intelligence' that isn't even available. Embarrassing.

Tim Cook has overstayed his welcome and needs to move on, time is proving a lot of (not all, but a lot of) his judgement calls have been wrong.

Honestly can't believe how much 'Apple Intelligence' has been used so sell the new phones. Sums up how little there was to set those devices apart.

Is anyone else barely using AI tools because you're just so used to doing things the "old way"? For me, certain workflows have become such a habit that it's tough to change them now.

The main thing I use is rephrasing emails to C-Level folks with ChatGPT, but beyond that, I don’t really feel the need for it in my day-to-day. To me, using AI feels a bit like giving instructions to an agency—you spend so much time explaining what you want that it almost feels faster to just do it yourself! Maybe I'm just getting old, haha.

The Apple Intelligence features also seem almost hidden? I always forget it is even there or an option.

On a side note, I do think the new Siri "glow" effect looks cool

I’ve started using it daily. I either write an email as I would and tell it I make it better or I will tell it to write an email and give it a 2 sentence brief of what I want. It saves me loads of time.

I’ve also started using it over google for doing calculations or even asking legal questions in relation to lease clauses etc and I find it very good.

So for me it’s almost become my search engine for day to day info that I look up.
