Gurman: Apple Planning No New Mac Releases For Remainder of 2022

But we were told the transition would be done by YE22. Where is our Mac Pro?

We were told Apple planned to complete the transition within two years...

Two year transition failed.

Thanks Michael Dell, I suppose it's time to shutter Apple forever...?

Where is the M-based Mac Pro? Wasn't the entire lineup supposed to be on Apple Sillicon by end of 2022, or am I remembering it wrong?

Things happen resulting in plans changing...

So, will they skip the M2 Pro/Max/Ultra line altogether and just call it M3? Hmm…

M2 might have just been about getting the Media Engine into the base Mn SoC...?

Was it a promise or was it a plan? Plans sometimes change.

100% this, plans change, especially when the whole world is turned upside-down...

Nobody likes a paywall...! ;^p

( ...side note, I am binging Supernatural right now... )

disagree. the Macbook Air is better for all of those

do you type on the glass? or do you ALSO need to carry a keyboard? At 12.9 inches, you are toting a crippled Macbook Air. I will agree that the iPad is superior for reading comic books and magazines. but thats it.

If anything, the MacBook Air is crippled by the lack of a touch screen...

With apps like Procreate & the Affinity Suite (Designer/Photo/Publisher) one can actually MAKE comic books and magazines on the iPad Pro...!

Not to mention DaVinci Resolve (coming soon) for video editing and color correction...

Or Swift Playgrounds for getting into programming...

Or Forger, Nomad Sculpt, and Putty for 3D sculpting...

TL;DR - iPad Pro great for creative types, "regular" iPads best for casual usage...?

The M* names are just marketing. There is no reason that Apple can’t have future M2s on TSMC N3. By the same token, there is no reason that Apple can’t skip M2 Pro/Max/Ultra and go straight to M3.

This is what I have been thinking, the base M2 SoC is a stepping stone, getting the Media Engine into the low-end ASi SoC while everything else is cramming towards a complete 3nm M3 family of SoCs...

That makes sense based on the fact that we have no hint that any M2 Pro/Max/Ultra chips are ready. But it's a serious blow to anyone wanting an updated M2 Mac Mini or iMac which seemed like low-hanging fruit that Apple could have delivered much sooner.
Very true (am waiting for a iMac refresh) - guessing Apple is constrained by TMSC's (5nm / 4nm) production capacity (same reason only the 14 Pro's got the new chip for the 14's). Would guess 3mm capacity will be constrained as well with iPhone 15 taking priority, but we will see.

Are there any wireless headphones that support lossless + ANC? That would need some serious computational horsepower.
Probably not but since Apple Music introduced Lossless, it doesn’t make sense for their premiere audio product not to have it. I’m waiting for version 2 of the AirPods Max, which I hope will have it.

Who is enforcing this rule that you just made up? Apple. Tomorrow Apple could say all of our new chips are now named G#.

Edit: Just so you understand that there are no hard and fast rules here. For the A9 Apple used 2 different manufacturers. Samsung used their 14 nm node while TSMC used their 16 nm node. For the A10 Fusion in the iPhone Apple used TSMC 16FFC nm and for the A10X in the iPad they used TSMC 10FF nm.

Last reply as this topic has nothing to do with Gurman.

You are still yet to tell us what Apples model numbers are for their chips.

And in regards to your comments on the A9 yes it has ‘slightly’ process technology sizes but it was incredibly difficult to ascertain any performance difference:

And as for your comment on the A10 that just proves I’m right, A10 in the iPhone was a different model to the A10”X” used in the iPad.
Again you are contradicting yourself.

What you are claiming is that Apple will knock out different performing chips using any old die size all under the same model number with no differentiation in the model numbers. No they won’t as you have pointed out yourself.
Last I checked the M1, M1 Pro, M1 Max, M1 Ultra all use the same process technology size, note that is different to the die size as an M1 Ultra is some what bigger then the base M1.

As I imagine, a considerable amount of time needed to actually start production of a CPU/GPU/SoC included item for consumers after a factory is able to produce the needed chips. So no, at least early 2023 Macs won't include 3nm SoCs.
no one said they would be released at the beginning of the year, in fact they could be shown in April or June

I disagree. The iPad Pro is much more versatile and fun to use for non work related work / consuming content. It's got Mini LED,promotion and better speakers than the MB Air. It's the only device with Pencil, touch and Keyboard input possibilities.

Only thing where I would prefer a MacBook is for Office work (and then you're arguably better of with a windows computer + these days you can do a lot online via Office 365) or for some creative tasks like video editing (although with Resolve coming we'll see how that evolves).

As someone with $2K+ worth of traditional headphones/amps, I can certainly appreciate lossless. But with all that ANC going on, the benefits of lossless seem a bit dubious, to me.

Well, that’s a good point. I suppose you could turn off the ANC for Lossless mode.

Did you see the quarterly results just announced? Mac sales are up while every other PC maker is down. Damned impressive for a “niche” product!
That’s why I said popular one and reason why that quarter was so high is due to the backed up demand that was not met in the prior quarter. Even Luca admits it won’t be the same next quarter. Whoever wanted a Studio, MacBook Air or Pro’s most likely got it. That 11 million might fall to a more traditional 8 million.

To be honest I have stopped getting excited about new Apple releases so that’s fine I’ll save money. Look at series 8 and iPad Pro these updates are not fun anymore
Seems it's that way now for anything Apple is putting out. It used to have a "wow factor" and was exciting.

Now....eh.

I think it's fine. The M1 Pro and Max versions of the 14" and 16" are only a year old. And they perform beautifully. Let Apple focus on getting its software side up to snuff. It's Tim's biggest challenge for the next few months.

I had originally hoped for some M2 MBP, actually in 3nm, next. It didn't look like being ready yet.
What we see might be all those covid restrictions in China delaying things significantly. I still prefer to wait for some finished product instead of rushing things. Possibly Apple realised they would be too late for this year's Christmas business anyway given logistics troubles and all?

Well, great.

Sounds like it's time to get inside the old Mac Pro 5,1 and do some maintenance.

It would be weird to release the M2 on 5nm and then the M2 pro/max on 3nm.
Wouldn't be the first time Apple has done it. A10 and A10X were on 16nm and 10nm respectively.

If they're being delayed from a November release until March or later, I would guarantee they will be on 3nm. Especially since that would bring performance/efficiency gains to differentiate them more from the M1 models. Rumors point to 3nm production ramping up at the end of this year and revenue to start coming in Q1 2023.
