Gurman: Apple Planning No New Mac Releases For Remainder of 2022

It won't happen, it's a model designation not marketing. The only chips on 3nm if it happens at all will be M3.
And if you read your post, it contradicts itself between the first and second sentences.
You’ll have to explain what you mean. The M names are made up by Apple’s marketing. They aren’t beholden to any third-party which means they can pretty much name things as they like. I see no contradiction.

Perhaps you can tell us what the model designation numbers of Apples M chips are then, because you are the one claiming it isn't M1, M2 etc as that's just 'marketing'.
You are wrong, they are a series of chips, a model range, the M2 is the range on 5nm, a change in due size, just like every other Apple chip by the way, will result in a new model number not reuse an old one.

Who is enforcing this rule that you just made up? Apple. Tomorrow Apple could say all of our new chips are now named G#.

Edit: Just so you understand that there are no hard and fast rules here. For the A9 Apple used 2 different manufacturers. Samsung used their 14 nm node while TSMC used their 16 nm node. For the A10 Fusion in the iPhone Apple used TSMC 16FFC nm and for the A10X in the iPad they used TSMC 10FF nm.

Funny, for a ”useless” device, I see them practically everywhere while traveling. Several YouTubers make a nice living using the iPad Pro as their primary machine. And let’s not even talk about visual artists.

"most useless" in a comparison ≠ "entirely useless" ..

Don’t expect 3nm for these. The production lines are still backed up and Apple will need to prioritize their 3nm supply for higher demand products. Not to mention the die designs for M2 Pro/ Max were finalized a while ago (and 3nm production won’t even begin to ramp up until later this year/ early 2023 with low yields at the beginning).

The VR headset, iPhone 15 (Pro and Ultra), M3 MacBook Air and possibly M3 iPad Pro will claim Apple’s 3nm supply for 2023. Those wanting 3nm pro level chips will probably have to wait until 2024.

That being said, there is a chance that the M2 Pro/ Max could make the jump to 4nm like the A16. Although technically the 4nm chips are still part of the 5nm process.

Long story short, if you already have an M1 system, just wait a couple more years for the big jump.

Apple is not planning to announce any new Macs in the remainder of this year, with all planned releases expected to take place in the first quarter of 2023, including updated versions of the MacBook Pro, Mac mini, and the Mac Pro, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman said today.
Apple representative already said that, still you had a Dec 13 rumor for Mac Pro on twitter, and there still could be something like a silent update of a M2 Mac mini that shows up before years end.

It's all my fault.

I've been waiting over a year for a M1/2 27"iMac. Nothing on the horizon for new iMacs. However, if I now purchase a 24" M1 iMac, I know damn well that Apple will then announce a blazing-fast M3 27" iMac soon after my 24" M1 purchase.

Maybe I should get the 24" M1 iMac just so everyone else can get what I wanted and waited so long for.

Damn - I really want to replace my 2014 Mac Mini asap!

The HDD died a few months ago but managed to follow a few YouTube tutorials and replaced it with an SSD (which to be fair has made a big difference to performance).

Mac Studio is overkill for me. I’d happily take a Mac Mini with M1 Pro chip…

History is rhyming. I remind you about the 2014 Mac mini which stayed in the lineup until the fall of 2018.

Be grateful if it is only two and a half years.
Given even the priority machines now seem to be on ~18 month cycles it seems Apple is preparing for/ even embracing Mac longevity and setting up the refresh cycle to follow that. A little sad for tech enthusiasts having to wait those extra months between refreshes, but probably better for consumers overall.

It's hard to fault them so far on what they have brought to the table since the M1 was first launched. Disappointing not to see anything new for sure but it happens.
