Time to get Garmin RV series if driving is your thing, eTrex for hiking and trail navigation, edge for cycling route, and folding maps as well.

Somehow specialized stand alone device have their place again...same with my decision using SSD-ed classic iPod instead crappy Apple Music constantly nagging me to subscribe...

Again, I get it. You aren't aware how companies such as Apple have enormous insight simply through gathering usage data and how that drives customer satisfaction and thus sales. Again... I get it, you don't understand and thus disagree. That's fine.

"Also, this 10% number you've pulled out of thin air - is that the threshold for how many users it will take voting with their wallets before the maps thing is reversed?"

You're partially right. I puled 10% out of thin air (as an EXAMPLE) as that would undoubtedly get Apple's attention. Could be less, could be more. Again, an EXAMPLE.

Are you going to vote with your wallet and purchase a phone from another manufacturer? Or blindly believe Apple has no insight, giving you a reason and an out to just do nothing.
Lol. Like I said, I don’t use Apple Maps in the first place, nor would work swap my phone and watch based solely on a map service. And, like I said, you seem to have no sense of nuance.

Is it possible that these ads may show when you tap on a specific place, for example a specific Restaurant?
I wouldn't want ads to pop up while searching for something, and I doubt Apple would do something like that. Otherwise, it will be the beginning of their demise.

(If you don’t agree to this, add your own comment with opposing view rather than disliking this one. This is my opinion.)

As long as main results are not suppressed and the ads are clearly marked and few in number, I’m fine with this. I trust Apple to not sell identifiable user data so no issues. We can’t escape ads anyway. Hoping Apple would pave the way for better ad handling.
Navigation apps are no place for ads. A real time tool designed to assist people operating a vehicle is not the place for ads. It would be the equivalent of monitor makers for operating rooms inserting ads during surgery (for those about to mock or yell at me for my extreme example, picture outpatient surgery).

Pretty much. Don't need distractions like that.

Apple Maps already wastes an insane amount of screen real estate my phone with their guides and recommendations. I wish I could turn those off. Ads would just be too much.

But insane Apple is such a big platform that make 4 billion on ads...a hobby bigger than most businesses.

Excellent news! Absolutely no reason to use Apple Maps if this happens… not only there’s still no turn by turn navigation, but accuracy sucks.

Tim Apple milking the hell out of the platform instead of innovating
Can you clarify what you mean by turn by turn navigation? My phone gives me every step (after this light turn left on the next light). But I see people say this so it must be some feature I dont understand.

Will whatever financial gain this brings be offset by a loss in customer goodwill/satisfaction? I suppose that’s the question that was asked at Apple and they seem to think not.

I happen to think different…I don’t buy supposedly premium products to have them used as a means of forcing advertising at me, and I suspect the long-term loss of customer goodwill may open opportunities for other companies.

Maybe this news was leaked as a trial balloon, if so I’m happy to help shoot it down. Apple “looking for loose change under the couch cushions“ like this is a bad look.

Because Waze is a free app on all platforms. Apple Maps is auto-installed on every iPhone, it is the default handler for directions, and Apple made plenty of money when it sold that iPhone.

Wildly different payment models.
Valid point for sure. Mine is that the ads are just wallpaper to me and I don't even notice their existence.

What happened to Apple's advertising about avoiding perverse incentives? The whole "you're the customer, not the product" marketing? The focus on privacy? Disappointing trajectory...

Eh bound to happen. I mean I don’t click on the ads. But Apple Maps is horrible. I use it because I want to keep my data safe. It’s not a platform I would advertise on. I mean I search now for an open restaurant get there and it’s closed. Could you imagine searching for a restaurant getting an ad. Going the wrong way and getting there and the road is closed. Apple has a few years befor Apple Maps is ready. I’ve screwed up once by trusting Apple Maps. It said to take a left… I took it, it was raining i couldn’t see anything and hit a concrete median that was in the middle of the road prob missing a no left turn sign that I didn’t see because of the rain or the late night but Apple Maps said take a left.

I had the same positive experience: reporting an issue will result in a quick fix.
Problem is, then a person has to go through the effort of finding ANOTHER problem to complain about. Nope. Better to not report it and have it there until someone else reports it.

Apple Maps is absolutely awful, after a decade it hasn’t come close to catching up with Google.
I've used both for years. Apple Maps is at least the equal of google maps. You have no idea what you're talking about.

I suggest everyone write Tim Cook and Eddy Cue and let them know you will be switching to another maps service since the only benefits of Apple Maps was privacy and no ads (everything else is better with Google Maps). If they get 10,000 emails about this, maybe they will rethink.

What's their email addresses? Let's brigade on Timmy and Eddy.
