(If you don’t agree to this, add your own comment with opposing view rather than disliking this one. This is my opinion.)

As long as main results are not suppressed and the ads are clearly marked and few in number, I’m fine with this. I trust Apple to not sell identifiable user data so no issues. We can’t escape ads anyway. Hoping Apple would pave the way for better ad handling.

Problem is they definitely won’t be few in number. Every time someone resorts to ads as a source of money, whether it’s a website, tv network or any kind of company, they abuse the resource by putting excessively too many ads. It’s a resource no one in the world ever uses reasonably. Better if they don’t even get started on the ads idea.

Do people actually use Apple Maps? It’s dreadful compared with google maps.

Only outside the US and maybe Canada. Americans and Canadians would likely disagree with that statement, Apple Maps works fine there.

Does anyone use Apple maps anyway? I guess Ads will be cheap to buy.. but if Apple include ads, it's the beginning of the end for the platform.. I guess every cat has its day, I wonder whos up next?

It’s all about investors. Gotta raise that service revenue which is all they’re looking for these days, at the expense of user experience.

The problem with ads is that no one ever handles them rationally. There’s always an excessive use of them. And it just gets worse over time. Look at youtube: they started out with a single 5-10 second Ad preceding some videos, which seemed rational and reasonable. Now almost every single video on youtube is preceded by either 2 or 3 of the short 5-10 second ads or one long 20-30 second Ad. Horrible. They ruined youtube for pure greed.

Bingo.

If Apple does choose to bake advertising into the overall Maps experience, you can be sure they've come up with a formula that only enhances our joy when navigating around this phenomenal product.

Apple will never betray our trust or privacy for a quick buck. You have to believe in Apple, they've never let us down.

Apple turning to ad placements in their signature apps is worrisome and will diminish the experience of using Apple apps. I’ve started to use the Maps app more often, but I won’t depending on how obtrusive these ads are. Maybe Apple thinks people are used to ads in other apps and continue to use them so why not join the ad party?

Believe me, Apple will never do anything destructive to the user experience.

I've been using Apple Maps more lately. It's much better than it used to be the point where the two are almost equal. But I still have to use Google Maps for hiking trails and things like that. Many of them do not appear on Apple Maps (I live in California, so it should be pretty effective here, but even then, Google Maps often has more information).

A thought just occurred to me....what if these ads are only displayed on the non pro devices. How would people view this?

Well on the bright side maybe Apple will do Advertising "right".
Useful, unobtrusive, inexpensive, private and possibly done in ways many of us never thought we needed.

As unobtrusive as asking me to sign up for Apple Music almost every time I open the app?

I’m using it all the time. Best nav app for reaching your destination:

Shows you exactly where in a huge lot a business is.
Integrates with every other app on my phone.
Integrates great with my car stereo.
No ads.

The graphics on the nav that came with my stereo are a little bit better (3D view of road and intersections, “real” view of road signs). But in comparison they nav is such a pain in the ass to use.

What’s with all the hate? How do you ever expect them to become the first quadrillion-dollar company? You guys should try to be a little more open minded.

Surely not via hard and honest work, that’s impossible. A company that’s already become a trillion dollar company didn’t get there 100% honestly via hard work, nor will they become the first quadrillion dollar company, if they ever do, 100% honestly via hard work.

Will you be voting with your wallet to send Apple a strong message you don't support their actions?
How? There's no clear way to vote against any single decision or feature with your wallet. There's no ad-free Maps tier to pay for or Maps subscription to opt out of. If you're suggesting people vote with their wallet by not getting the iPhone 14 this year, how does that become a clear message to Apple that a user doesn't like this one decision instead of thinking people didn't like the colours or the lightning connector or any number of things that could be a plausible explanation. The idea of voting with your wallet against any big tech conglomerate's (be it Apple, FB, Microsoft, Google, etc) decision is utterly ridiculous.

In a nutshell. No. We pay a premium for Apple hardware and services to have a premium experience. Apple needs to remember why their customers bought into their ecosystem in the first place.

Why Apple?
The money you earn from ads must be less then the money you’ll lose from folks leaving your platform because of the ads. You will also lose credibility as a non tracking, privacy first company and also lose repeat customers.

No ads please.
Oh don't worry, we still respect your "privacy" and "security". The targeted ads you will see aren't because we have been tracking you, it's simply because we know you and we care. The walled garden is to protect you, not for our profits. Trust us, you should trust us, just ask us.

It's only utterly ridiculous to you (and others) because you don't want to make the effort to stand up and purchase a competitor phone. Far easier to complain on a tech forum and call it a day.

If Apple lost 10% of their Apple iPhone annual sales (roughly 22 million phones) and sales of computers/tablets over the Maps ads issue they'd switch back. You may not be aware that large companies through surveys and other sampling methods regularly gauge customer satisfaction and why sales are lost/gained.
