I'm so ready to upgrade from my Intel iMac, but I've been using 27" models for 10+ years and I'm afraid "downgrading" to a 24" won't work. That said, after all these years I still find a 27" screen is almost too large, so rumours of a 30 or 32" screen scare me a bit. It might work if it has the same physical dimensions. Removing the 27" was a really odd decision...

Apple taking their sweet time upgrading the iMac so they can sell out a few of those old lightning accessories before switching to USB C

Tim is always thinking supply chain 😎

It would be nice to see 24” iMac, M3, 16GB 512 minimum configuration with ability to get 32GB and maybe up to 4TB. Oh, and a reasonable price.

My preferred would be an 24" M2 Pro or Max (or M3 Pro/Max when it becomes available), 32G of RAM with the option of 64G, 2TB SSD. Apple just charges too much for anything over 2TB. 4 Thunderbolt ports and 2 USB-A's. And definitely a reasonable price.

Anyway, I just want black bezels. Just look at images like this, it’s the only Mac with white bezels. Where’s the consistency?

Honestly, if it’s just an M2 bump, it would be really disappointing and they could’ve done that a year ago. Perhaps we’re in for a surprise? Did they manage to place a M2 Pro in the iMac and that’s why it took this long ?
Why would Apple wait so long? Because they want the iMac to have both the M2 and M2 Pro.

However, they wanted to release that combo in the Mac mini first, so the iMac had to wait.

Then, in June, Apple wanted to focus the spotlight on the Vision Pro headset and 15" MacBook Air, so the iMac had to wait again.

October is the first available slot that makes sense for a 24" iMac launch, giving the 15" Air enough time to gain sales before everyone starts focusing their attention to another Mac.

I'm wondering what all the people with a 27'' Intel iMac are going to do now that the 2017 model can't be updated to Sonoma. I doubt that most of them would be happy with a 24'' iMac. I guess macMini or Studio and a larger display as it does not look as if there is going to be a new 27'' iMac in the lineup.
Just use Opencorr Legacy Patcher. Works great in my experience.

must be nice to be a flip flippedy fish and still be the rumor mill mac "expert". This "expert" is another version of the everyday weatherman

Looking at my calendar, if this is true I'd suspect it's not much more than a spec bump that'll be thrown on the website at some stage. Don't they usually give a week's advance notice for events? That would put the event in early November rather than October.

If Apple does indeed release an M3 iMac next week or within the next few weeks I will be pleased, but I’ll also enjoy the silence from all those presently clamouring Apple will never put M3 into an iMac until much later or that M2 is the best iMac fans can hope for in the near future.

Methinks the question here is not, "what's taken Apple so long to update iMac to M2?" but rather, "what has Apple decided that iMac needs most?".

Looking at the rest of their product line it becomes obvious that iMac has been sorely lacking in having an XDR display. Understanding Cupertino's predilection with perfection methinks a "mere rehash" or update of the 27" 5K just wasn't where Apple saw iMac going.

The new straight-back (vs curved back) design language for devices spotlighting their own silicon has been emerging with Pro Display XDR, Studio Display and 24" iMac and methinks we should expect its adoption for their 28", 32" and 42" models going forward. Curved iMacs say, um, "Intel inside". LOL

Also, emerging energy-efficiency rules around the globe are moving manufacturers to have to provide products to operate in those evolving market conditions moving forward. Methinks Apple's investments and acquisitions in/of mini-/micro-LED (high energy efficiency) display tech shines some light on the pathway they're creating for themselves.

Apple has set itself to be a global vanguard for providing carbon-neutral products and solutions, and I expect, "XDR iMac" will be their "clean, green, XDR desktop machine".

I have a 24" as a second monitor to my 27" and two 24" at work. Why not? What I don't get is people only using one monitor. Don't they do real work? 😂
I have a 49 inch super wide screen for my office. Even that is not sufficient for my work flow (being a lawyer who needs a lot of files open on the screen)

I listened to the relay.fm Upgrade live stream and quite enjoyed Jason's take on this (which I entirely agree with).

The most likely updates are:

- M2 iMac (possibly with an M2 Pro variant)
- M2 13" MacBookPro (probably with an M2 Pro variant)

Yep, Mac Studio + 27" (or bigger) monitor. Much better - and cheaper - option than 27" iMac. That's what I did over a year ago.

You won't regret switching to Mac Studio + 27" inch monitor. Much better option - and much cheaper as there's a choice of affordable 4K monitors (the difference between 4K and 5K is indistinguishable to human eye under normal viewing conditions).

Well, everything now suggests I was entirely wrong. :)

I guess I'll still hold out hope for an M3 Pro iMac 24" and an M3 Pro MBP 13" :)
