What are most people doing with their M1 MacBook Airs that requires "the fastest notebook chip every made"?

The M1 isn't that much different than an A14.
I can run the full Adobe suite, design, photo, UX, and video. They all run great on the M1BA without fan noise.

I love my older iPad Pro, but can't do all that on any iPad.

Why does the iPad need an M# chip instead of an A# chip?

Bloomberg's highly-respected Mark Gurman says that he expects nothing "particularly innovative" or "extraordinary" to launch at Apple's "Spring Loaded" event next week, Tuesday, April 20.

apple-event-particularly-innovative-article.jpg

Gurman made the remarks during an interview for Bloomberg Technology, in which he reaffirmed that Apple will launch a new 11-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pro, with the higher-end model featuring a brand new mini-LED display. Gurman says these new iPads are only an "iterative update" to the iPad line, an increasingly vital product family for the tech giant thanks to the global health crisis.

The event will be Apple's first product launch of 2021, and speculation about what could be announced is nothing short of rampant. One of the biggest new upcoming products expected from Apple is redesigned iMacs, which Bloomberg has previously reported will receive a design that is in line with the Pro Display XDR and a more powerful Apple silicon chip.

No timeframe has been set for when these new iMacs could debut and Gurman says, "if the iMac does indeed get launched next week, that's going to be a big deal." Apple is also reportedly preparing to launch AirTags, a circular Tile-like tracking device that can be attached and used to locate items such as keys, bags, and more.

The event will take place on Tuesday, April 20, and will be live-streamed via Apple's website, the Apple TV app, and Apple's YouTube channel. It'll kick off at 10:00 a.m Pacific Time, and for those unable to watch, MacRumors will be providing full event coverage both on MacRumors.com and through the MacRumorsLive Twitter account.

Spring Loaded sounds interesting. I hope something foldable, innovative spring to hold 2 screens. Logo looks like a Spring.

I think we will see a new iMac with an elastic stand that always assumes the perfect adjustment for your eyes.

Nothing. He’s just trying to get the last word in before Apple’s keynote to show that he’s still relevant. Somehow.
It would help if people watched the original source of the article. It wasn't a criticism. Gurman was merely replying to someone asking if we should expect anything innovative.

That’s fine — not every release can be a blockbuster, but if true, then why have an event at all? There’s something to be said for meaningful silent updates.

I can think of multiple Apple events the last few years that probably would’ve been better received in this way. Sometimes the hype of an event can lead to negative crack back if the announcements were overblown.

This is true. I think Spring Loaded as the event is called means that Apple’s Spring event is “loaded” with software and hardware announcements. Whether we will see anything innovative by Mr. Gurman’s definition remains to be seen, but I am still excited about the event regardless. Daddy needs a new iPad Pro! 😁

Apple might not feature anything 'particularly innovative' but if they do then they do

Glad that I watched the actual interview. I was scared for a second with the article that it ment nothing beside iPads and Airtags (e.g. Apple tempering expectations). I think he did say this the just to tamper expectations from for people that don't follow Apple on a regular basis that we are not seeing a new product category next week. He did mention that there is a possibility we see iMacs 😍

Isn’t iOS’ app loader known as the Springboard? Maybe they have some unexpected apps on the way?

I didn’t realize this would turn into a pissing match. The majority of people just use a MacBook Air to run Safari / Chrome so if an M1 chip is overpowered in a Mac, why not have an overpowered iPad?

sigh, I specifically said “M1 Spec” not an M1 itself. I hate forums for this reason. I want Apple to streamline their offerings more. Put the same chip in phone, tablet, laptop, allow the clock to adjust on the fly depending on battery health or presence of power adapter and heat / thermals and then let the chip solve tasks fast enough for the user but just streamline manufacturing like just use the same chip everywhere except in professional desktop / laptop environments That’s all I was saying. Apple can make the cores super efficient and low wattage when needed. Most people on an iPad or a MacBook Air have very similar needs when it comes to just running a browser with gmail in a pinned tab. The M1 doesn’t cost more to manufacture than this year’s A series chip. We’re talking pennies in difference between the two. Long term, I’m hoping Apple will allow phones and tablets to behalf like notebooks when hooked up to a display, keyboard and mouse And I expect pro-apps are going to continue improving on iPad OS. People are already exporting large audio and video files on iPads, why not have a chip that can do better with that?

**** man, I don’t know I was just casually saying I would like apple to streamline things and now 3 people so far have told me I’m an idiot then showed off at how amazing they are on M1 Macs. I work in the same creative industry as most of you do and I don’t know why my view has now 3 people telling me that’s a waste? Why is it a waste? Give people a CPU that’s similar to M1 specs and let the CPU’s cores turn on and off depending on the use. It won’t cause the iPad Pro’s price to go up. The iPad Pro with a keyboard already costs more than a MacBook Air.

I feel like most of the times I post on MacRumors about something positive and forward-looking, people just crap on it. Where’s the vision? Where’s the excitement that at small tiny chip with smart cores going into a phone or tablet? I paid $1300 for my iPad Pro, it’d be nice to know I’m not sacrificing performance that I could have had in a laptop when plugged in. Adobe’s apps will get better on iPad OS and it’d be great to have a chip for that.

Xcode compiling, data analysis, Final cut, DaVinci Resolve, playing demanding games. None of which runs on iPad.
But I suppose you could still find a use case for the M1 in iPads. I would rather have a slower SoC and more battery life though.

See above.

Don't be so dramatic, you literally asked what people are doing on an Air that requires the M1. If you spend any time in the Apple Silicon forum, you would see that people are running all kinds of demanding software on the M1BA because under most conditions it is as fast as the M1BP. But if you are going to use that argument, why would anyone need an M# iPad since they just run Safari/Chrome on it.

Beyond streamlining production, which is not how I read your statement because to me M#-spec means M#-power, how would an M# iPad be better than an A# iPad?

If multiple people are misinterpreting your post, the problem is either that those people are overreacting or your post wasn't clear enough. You can decide which it is.

If there is a new iPad Pro, it will likely be an A14x. Apple does tend to have an event whenever they introduce a new model with a new ASi chip.
