One doesn't have to be Gurman to have come up with that prognostication. I look forward to having Face ID on the Mac. I hope Touch ID will also remain as a backup.
Honestly, I’d rather have Touch ID with the iMac keyboard being sold as a standalone peripheral. The Windows face authentication was wonky on the couple of devices on which I tried it, and I wonder whether Apple would allow Face ID with non-Apple camera hardware.

WOW. Why so long? Why not now? It's on all the iPads and iPhones and they all use Axx Chips

It's not like this feature is difficult rocket science

Windows 11 and 10 have it

They need to finish buying the companies that own the patents so they can act like they invented it and did it first and best.

other than the fact your response focused on the M1.. quit bloviating to impress and just make your point.

I did. The point is - these apps will be fine and Mac won’t be locked just to MAS apps or sandbox apps.

But what do I know, I’m just a sheep.

Good point about non-Apple hardware. I doubt they would do that given the possible legal ramifications that could affect Apple.

If you read all the comments, you’ll get the answer.

This is the time to remind you that young people are just as into computers as you were. So fat chance with that. :D
Yes. And, some of them have gladly accepted the restrictions Apple has imposed on the iOS App Store. I can speak only for myself though.

We know Mark Gurman from his time at 9to5Mac... and from all the coverage he gets on MacRumors from stories he writes at Bloomberg.

But to the average person... Mark is just one of thousands of journalists at hundreds of media outlets.

I don't see any reason of delaying to attach Face ID on Mac. They can add it right now.

They’re gonna completely lock down the OS first. Enjoy your app store subscription only method of getting new software, hope the faceID was worth it
What are you talking about? What would faceID have to do with general computing permissions?

not if they wanted people to actually make the transition. I believe there would have been a lot of resistance. Hi, here is the new Mac. If your favorite apps arent in the App Store, you won't be using them anymore.

I am guessing you do not use Hazel or Little Snitch because you don't seem to grasp what they can do..
I would have not purchased my first personal use Mac if things ended up restricted.
If anything becomes restricted in the future, I have no problem heading right back to Windows. I like MacOS, but I can live without it.

This sounds reasonable to me, but I think Apple will pull the plug the moment they release macOS that drops support of last supported Intel macs. Could be two or three more versions down the line, and lockdown begin.
Craig can say all he wants, but that won’t change the eventual lockdown future.
Based on Apples current support trajectory, the final update to consumer Intel machines should be about 5 years. The MacBook Pro 16" is still the current 16" in production from 2019.

Doesn't Apple give about 7 years of updates with an additional 2 years of security only updates? Who knows what they will do? I could get on board with your numbers as I have a feeling they are going to try to axe X86 as quick as they can while burning everyone who bought the 16" MBP, 27"/21" iMac before they released Apple Silicon. Hell two of those on the list still don't have AS yet.

I predict this will go hand in hand with the "iOS Style" lockdown of macOS which apple has been building toward.

Hazel, Little Snitch, Rogue Amoeba will all be in jeopardy but the ovis aries will be happy. 😀
Steve Jobs would never have… um… you know what forget I said anything.

Interesting to see how Apple is desperately playing catch-up to Microsoft who has had Face ID for 2+ years.

Microsoft's facial recognition is nowhere near as good as Apple's Face ID tech. Microsoft is not using the same "Face ID", and Apple is not "desperate" by a long shot.
