Which kind of shows your lack of understanding if you’re comparing an AR/VR headset to an iPhone. Totally different use cases that don’t even belong in the same category. Is this a niche product? Absolutely. Apple knows that. But we don’t know where they’re gearing this product and how they will market it. There has to be another level of usefulness for a product like this other than just ‘Memojis’, like in the professional standard for training with the likes of surgical training procedures, automotive dynamics, engineering design, etc.
I am looking at this from a shipment volume and profitability point of view. Apple needs to look to the next big thing when the iPhone turns into the next iPod.

The iPhone is the central hub tethering consumers to most of their accessory core products. I wouldn’t compare the likes of an iPod to an iPhone, those were also totally different products, and that’s evident from a marketing standpoint.

I will be for an early-adopter-slash-developer type of audience, a bit like the first Apple Watch but very expensive. In 10 years everyone will have one.

But the main driver of profitability between 2001-2007 was the iPod and not the Mac or other services. So it is excuseable to compare one tent pole to another.

Apple's AR/VR push is towards a time when the iPhone will end up being the next iPod.

Is it just me or does this sound... terrible?

The AirPods was universally mocked when it was first unveiled as well.

I have faith. In Apple. In their ability to integrate hardware and software. In their design-led process. And most importantly, in their readiness to keep iterating and supporting this category till it is the only viable option left on the market.

I believe.

Uhh No.

I’m not sure why all of these companies think it’s ok to use avatars.

If I’m doing 3D I want it to look right.

But I can envision a Memoji less FaceTime discussion with A/R

It’s unreality no matter how you slice it. Right or wrong many people have hang ups about their looks. You won’t get many people to use this if they look like themselves. They will need to provide tools to create idealized images of yourself plus customization.

You know it will happen. It happened with selfies and instagram and everything else. It’ll happen with this (assuming it ever takes place). A whole new world of pressure for people to look and appear physically perfect (however they choose to define it) that’s unrealistic and unobtainable in the real world.

The best field to pursue for the next generation is psychiatry and psychology for all the new self image neuroses that will be developed.

Gurman: I imagine a virtual reality version of FaceTime where you can be in a conference room with dozens of people. Instead of seeing their actual faces, you'll see 3D versions of them (Memojis).

Why would you want to use Memojis in a professional meeting or in front of dozen of people?

Who wants this? Why? What for? So many questions. Just strange.
All current virtual meeting systems using VR are this. And it is the only possible way for a VR virtual meeting to happen, so Mark is just stating the obvious.

The use of Memoji, to me, would look nicer than what is currently available. The only questions I gave are around how it will track facial movement other than the eyes, and how hand gestures could be involved.

I think Apple stands alone in their implementation of Memoji. I think this was a VR play from the beginning.

Quit teasing me and just announce these already!!

That being said, I hope they partner with AAA game devs and have games off the bat ready to go. Don’t rely on Apple Arcade puzzle games. This thing is gonna be too powerful for that.
If they can somehow get the Apple AR/VR user into a game like Grand Theft Auto it might jump-start sales.

What if you don’t have an AR headset on? Apple can just keep it simple and have your picture up. It’s as simple as it gets. I don’t think many people out there rely on using memoji’s to communicate.

In my opinion. I really don’t see a point in it. Memoji’s is just a distraction.
Memojis are just like the avatars people use in online games. In games it's fun. Who knows what will happen in professional situations. It could be hilarious.

Right! Even the thought of it sounds so unprofessional. What happened to making eye contact during the presentation? We will be relying on looking at some avatar?

It's a distraction, trying to figure out what the other person looks like. Is Memoji is what’s it going to take to impress Tim Cook?
I think it is better if the Memoji/avatar is a human instead of some kind of AI. Maybe if you need a picture of the person behind the Memoji you can ask for a business card with a real picture.

If someone is so self conscience that their are concealing with an avatar in a business meeting, that tells me enough that this person is not leadership material. Same goes for dating or anything else. Enough said.
It is not about concealing and I doubt people will choose ridiculous avatars for business meetings.

Yes, people are too judgmental about appearance. Memojis and avatars make things easier.

But wait... if you want to hold a conference, and see people face expressions... why just not a simple FaceTime / zoom video call?
You will see expressions in a higher quality Memoji. FaceTime with many users can be annoying. Staring at a bunch of people on a flat screen for FaceTime...compared to being in a 3D virtual world with these same people.

With an iPhones faceID scanning your face while wearing the AppleGoggle. ?
