That's really bad news.

I think a 2023 major release of all OS focussing on bug fixes only would not only be the most significant upgrade imaginable, but also the most exciting and best thing which Apple could achieve with their resources.
Of course even a full year's cycle wouldn't come close to fixing all bugs, but maybe it would at least be really helpful in ironing out the most significant and annoying shortcomings which devalue working with these OS every single day.

Well, if this prediction holds true, then it's half-baked features again...thrown onto an environment which already suffers from severe stability issues far more than it benefits from adding new functions.
I think every feature they probably add will make this update less significant, compared to the bugfix-only-super-release which could have increased the usability, productivity and fun to work with those OS far more than any feature.

For the love of Jobs, please:
  • Slide to hang up call
  • Slide to dismiss alarm
  • Folder in App Library showing apps not in Home Screen
  • Nickname CarPlay vehicles
  • Nickname Automated Shortcuts
  • Nickname apps on Home Screen
  • Get Passwords out of Settings
  • Make some Notifications be able to survive a ‘Clear’
  • More than 9 apps on a Home Screen folder view
  • More than 9 pins in iMessage
  • Third-party app support in Control Center
  • Move Lock Screen customizations off the Lock Screen
  • Third-party app support in Lock Screen, as well as disabling shortcuts
  • Hide or categorize non-alerting iMessage conversations
  • Cache mailbox locally on iOS device
  • Revamp convoluted Camera UI
A lot of these aren’t feature requests, these are UI/UX deficiencies, plain and simple.
you can already get passwords from settings. Or did you mean to move passwords from settings? Most of your list is something that only you want... Though I would agree to simplify editing UI.

Curious to know what these requests are.

Personally, I'd like a number row in the keyboard or numbers as secondary options on the top letter row, like on the Google Keyboard. I also think the bottom space of the keyboard where the emoji and dictation buttons are is being underused. The keyboard hasn't changed one bit since the iPhone X (and even that just added the bottom mostly useless space). I feel like there's more they could do with it. The keyboard still feels weirdly optimized for an older design with a home button.

These kinds of global condemnation statements again Apple, with no specifics, really irk me.

Can you specifically describe the stability and performance issues you are having. My 14 Pro Max works very well. I very satisfied with the speed of the iOS and the stability. Sure, there are a few minor imperfections, but overall, I'm not really having any significant issues.
The biggest instability in IOS 16 is iCloud integration, I'm regularly seeing bugs with that, where the iCloud seemingly doesn't see a device is logged in, even though it is.
Greying out private music tracks, I've had for years on the iPhone (even though they play normally on the Mac) is another huge issue in IOS 16 😏
I'm not a very demanding user, except for the integration between all my devices, so when I notice issues, there are real issues 😡

Great news, bring them on! I personally like new features & welcome any improvements, big and small. Perhaps I am lucky, but I have not had any issues whatsoever with iOS 16 and iPadOS 16.

Now if they would just put people on fixing bugs instead of creating 3D buildings in Apple maps we coud have both features and bug fixes. /s

I'm not surprised. Aside from the camera system which still improves radically every year, the updates to the rest of the hardware are not very significant for most people. I expect we're going back to more software-driven features reserved for new devices that also tinker around the edges of hardware improvement (to justify being only available on the new iPhones Pros/Ultras).

Can you be more specific about those “severe stability issues”?

I’m really happy to hear this, because a “bug fix only” update would be pretty disappointing. Especially since I’ve not run into any bugs in iOS 16 (not saying no one else has). Besides, if there are bugs to address, that should be worked out in Beta releases and the mid-year updates, not a complete years big release! That’s just my two cents. Some popular request features is a great idea! 👍🏻

It’s about time we just catch up to Android in the customization front. We’re going to be on the 17th version of iOS and the only changes Apple has really made to the Homescreen in all that time is to allow us to choose our own wallpapers 😂🤣😂.

You can change anything in a desktop, even the little watch faces on the Apple Watch are almost infinitely customizable. I know they are mostly complications, but dude, I can choose soooo many different colors, designs, backgrounds etc. Why does my smartslab have to be so boring and offer hardly any options in this area???

Apple needs to finally realize these are our phones, we should be allowed to do what we want with them from an aesthetic perspective. People have a choice with Android, you can leave it how it came out of the box, or go into the theme store and choose from thousands of themes. Apple clearly doesn’t care if people do things like theme icons using shortcuts, yet when we do so we lose functionality as if it’s a punishment for doing so. No badges on themed icons and everytime you open one you get a stupid notification banner (except on the 14 pro’s where they integrated it into the DI which is better but still).

Even the grid can still be a thing, just let us out the icons anywhere on that grid, and not be forced to have everything snap to the upper left corner. On my Android phone I have my widgets on the top of the screen and my icons on the bottom for easy reach. C’mon already!

And for the love of every God in the multi-verse, let us choose whether we want that Homebar or not in settings! its almost always there, staring back at me, big ugly like on my screen that does nothing. It blocks so much content it’s ridiculous, especially in Safari where it never goes away, every landscape video has content blocked by the bar. Get rid of it!

There’s more I can’t think of now but some good ideas in here, let’s make iOS fresh Timmy boy!!!

It really seems like the Apple and the tech industry has hit a wall. We have devices that are more powerful than needed, and can do so many things that we don’t even have some must-have or highly desired capability that we can look forward to. Some of that may simply be we all don’t know what we’re missing until someone shows us, but like others have commented, there are plenty of iterative fixes Apple should address. One thing that annoys me on a daily basis is how I’ll check my phone for emails, reading them as they come in and I’ll get notifications of emails I’ve already read pop up. That’s sloppy that iOS can’t recognize that I’m in Mail and don’t need Mail notifications.
A sync from iCloud?

Remember the jailbreak mods that allow you to put icons anywhere on the grid? Yeah, that's still not possible. It would be incredible if that feature was finally released.
I wonder where a request like this would fall in terms of actual user base requests though. All my friends use iPhones, and i have never once heard one of them complain about this or request it.

I feel like the last 8-10 ios updates have just been minor 'tune ups' with a crap ton of bugs. Where is the innovation?? iOS can use a large design overhaul IMO, and it's long overdue. The last time I was excited for an update was ios 7. There have been barely any cosmetic changes since then and Android has far surpassed on the customization front.
