Apple knows that throwing more hardware power behind a stalled capable OS is a recipe for disaster hence it shows with dropping iPad sales figures. Apple would be enthralled to lump tablet sales with Mac laptop sales if the OS is similar if not capable of such merit.
What’s funny, is a “bad year” for iPad sales is a “record breaking year” for Macs. :)

For one, it's not Windows. That's really the only limitation most people need to hear. But a macOSDeX device would probably do very well if it uses shared storage and has the option to push OSX to an external display while still being an iPad on the primary. Wireless displays exist now, so it's not like we need that tech to be developed.
What I’m saying, though, is that when one looks at what DeX IS, it’s none of that.

Wonder if the magsafe charger will use one of the 3 connectors currently in use (watch, MBP, phone) or introduce yet another new one

The iPad’s OS has always been its weak point. And they’ll —never— allow it to be a laptop replacement.
Gotta remember, Apple’s game plan is for people to buy BOTH a laptop and an iPad
Yep. Apple sees the iPad as a "companion device" and nothing more.

Maybe one day that will change and they will actually make the iPad useful as a standalone device by actually making iPadOS not a sack of steaming horse ****.

3 important things:

1 - MagSafe like MacBooks, not iphone

2 - Pro Apple Silicon with Pro moniker device. M2 Pro. If the air gets M1, M2, etc., then this will get pro

3. Now the OS needs to catch up

But it makes sense - if you want a laptop, you buy a laptop, if you want a tablet, you buy a tablet. In some use cases, the laptop is better, in some others, the tablet. For some people, one can completely replace the other. But any attempt to unify them in a single device has failed, because they’re very different products.
For me when I just want to cruise YouTube, watch a video or read a comic the IPad is what I’m using. If I’m ripping video, or doing work it’s my macbook

Apple hound let the current models go till 2023 and work on optimization of IpadOS

Damnit Tim, don't release it around the same time as the phone and watch. Give my wallet a rest period!
I’m guessing there will be 2-3 events throughout the fall. Prior to these, they will introduce an Apple Wallet “Focus Mode”. ?

M1, M2, M3, just seems like overkill for the software. We must've hit the diminishing return on tablets, haven't we? I still use iPad Air 3, mainly for consumption, magazines, movies, shows, etc., never stops or slows down. I know my use case is not as intensive as others, but sheeeesshh!
That's why Apple makes the entry iPad for users like yourself.

MagSafe on iPad isn’t for charging the iPad, but rather reverse charging your phone and airpods. Looking forward to seeing iPad OS getting some actual improvements in WWDC to utilise the M1 (or even the A12Z) chips.
Seems an odd thing to add if you can't also charge the iPad via MagSafe.

But I am curious by how MagSafe would work with the Magic Keyboard. I bet Apple releases a new version such that MagSafe will work through the back of the keyboard case, either to charge something else or itself or both. The fold is offset just enough to possibly allow a MagSafe connection in the middle.

Plus, the iPad outsells ALL Macs by a pretty wide margin. They’re doing a lot right by those customers. There are simply more people in the world interested in the iPad than the Mac.
In the last two years, since the debut of Apple Silicon Macs, the Mac lineup has been outselling iPad at least from a revenue perspective.

With Macs finally getting the amazing iPad Pro chips, there really is little to gain from the iPad Pro without a better underlying OS for it. After getting the new MacBook Pro, I rarely use my iPad Pro. The Mac finally feels like a modern device.

1. Agree

2. I highly doubt the iPad Pro chassis can handle the thermal requirements of an M2 Pro. What Apple probably could do is make 16GB RAM standard on all iPad Pro models, like they do with MBP models. And the iPad Air can remain at 8GB RAM.

3. Agree

I have absolutely zero interest in magsafe on an iPad and an M2 is great, but after the M1 refresh I am really not resource constrained anymore. I want more screen real estate and better Apple Pencil functionality. Anything else isn't gonna be a buy for the foreseeable future.

In my mind, the story and focus should be on the new iPadOS. The M2 chip and MagSafe are gimmick sales tactics without a more robust OS.
Completely agree. IpadOS needs to have robust external display support, and finally render the OS in the native aspect ratio of the monitor (i.e., eliminate the black bars around the image). Also windowing support especially when connected to a monitor. The multi-tasking implementation that exists now (especially on m1 that runs the full blown macOS) is a joke.

Make iPadOS great!!

Pretty much every quarter the mac generates more revenue than the iPad, however the Mac has far more expensive options… so it’s hard to say whether the iPad or the Mac generates more profit or not…

iPad Pro with MagSafe Charging is just an excuse to make the "old" Magic Keyboard obsolete. We will have to buy the "new" Magic Keyboard with MagSafe passthru on its backside, so we can use MagSafe on the iPad while using the keyboard at same time.

Yes, I agree and it will be interesting to see what happens at WWDC. However, Apple is very aware of the balance needed to keep iPadOS extremely simple. As long as MacOS exists (and it's not going anywhere anytime soon) Apple will always prioritize keeping iPadOS simplicity as that's what majority of it's users need.

I understand they can create hidden complexity for power users, but I can't see them creating complexity at the expense of simplicity. It's a difficult thing to do.
Have you looked at the iPad OS settings menu and the proliferation of iPad models lately? Tim is a master of complexity and Steve's rolling over in his grave. When Jobs came back in 97', he trashed the majority of Apple products and kept just a few and made them the best. He truly exemplified the KISS principle.
