However more than anything, iPad OS needs more flexible file management to make it smoothly usable. The sandbox approach is great/secure for phones and consumer devices, but a hindrance for smooth pro work. Maybe they can introduce a shared folder on the device where it is quicker for apps to collaborate on files?

Yes, I agree and it will be interesting to see what happens at WWDC. However, Apple is very aware of the balance needed to keep iPadOS extremely simple. As long as MacOS exists (and it's not going anywhere anytime soon) Apple will always prioritize keeping iPadOS simplicity as that's what majority of it's users need.

I understand they can create hidden complexity for power users, but I can't see them creating complexity at the expense of simplicity. It's a difficult thing to do.
Agreed.

I would love to know that there's a hidden side project on some development server of theirs which has a "souped up" iPadOS that has all the super-swanky useful bits, such as a beefier windowing system (more than two apps), "desktop-like" home like the Mac, multitasking, multi-virtual-desktops, etc. of course, then it'd just be macOS, tho.

Or better yet, an "iPad" version of macOS, minus 3rd party drivers/devices. Or maybe a new kernel API for 3rd party stuff... that would be a huge project for them, but they got the software/OS brains for it.

That'd be a real treat, for sure!

I wouldn't be surprised if they start from the top down with M2, at WWDC with the Mac Pro.

That said, it could very well be that the Mac Pro SoC is in its own class, based off neither A14 nor A16.
I believe it should be top down. It seems odd if the next gen lower end SOCs get upgrades first like they did the first round. Because then the next higher SOCs have less gain over the one below it for a longer period of time. As a consumer it’s not a good look. I think more differentiation adds to the performance gains of the next gen chip. I really hope they transition to that.

Wooo hype hype! So, excited for even a more powerful chip the first one could not even take full advantage of. What a money grab. Definitely skipping this release and keeping my M1 led 12 inch.

And how is that related to wireless charging?
Maybe just maybe MagSafe II will use the magnetic sections of the ring for more than just attaching and instead be used like the three pin SmartConnector evolved and then the option of Qi will also be provided. Think outside the box.

What’s funny, is a “bad year” for iPad sales is a “record breaking year” for Macs. :)
Even a 2017 iPad Pro is capable of everything a 2021 iPad Pro can do. Features like CenterStage does not take away from the core function of a tablet. The hardware has been capable for a long time the OS not so much. So does it make sense if even an M1 Pro or Max chip is in an iPad if that has never been the bottleneck to the experience.

A 2010 Mac can do everything a M1 Ultra does only slower. With that reasoning the Ultra is completely unnecessary unless of course MacOS get some more features. Interesting to put the argument the other way around, is it not?

Perhaps I am an edge case but the iPadOS must have a simple and quick interface. In a teaching situation (or any other meeting) the Mac is not suitable at all, the UI is too slow. You are certainly not fiddling around with file management in these situations. You certainly do not accept app reloads (16 Gb RAM sounds good). If your work includes the pencil (drawing, note taking etc) the iPad is superior to a Mac. Screen size? 15-16 inch fits in most briefcases and believe me, when drawing in class, larger cavas is better than smaller canvas. A 4 m2 black board is the reference. Perhaps teaching is not a PROfession?

"Pro" people spend they time in apps, not in the OS per se. If you do you are another kind of "Pro" who should be using a Mac, Linux machine or Win PC (or all three). Choosing the correct tool for the job is indicative of a real "pro". Forcing a Mac work flow and experience into a iPad is not the way to go.

The reason I need a Mac is the poor external screen support and dependence of the Apps that are exclusive to Mac/PC such as CAD and 3D drawings. Within a few years, we are there.

Great! I can’t wait to have M2 processing power on iPadOS to play Subway Surfer and scroll Instagram.

Apple might as well slapp an Nvidia RTX 3090 on the back , but in the end all it will do is run Safari browser and play iTunes movies.

This device and OS was not built for more than media consumption and light work.

My first gen iPad Pro batteries is on it’s last legs, so I am looking forward to a new iPad Pro ASAP.

I have to agree that it’s the software rather than the hardware that needs an update. Also I’m not convinced that the M2 will use TSMC's N4 process as the rumours are that this won’t enter mass production some time next year.

MagSafe
In my mind, the story and focus should be on the new iPadOS. The M2 chip and MagSafe are gimmick sales tactics without a more robust OS.

Agreed, yet let’s not forget that iPadOS evolution is deliberately held back by Apple for these reasons:

a) to differentiate iPads from Macs;

b) to cover all the variable iPad specs across the current lineup and having to make things run reasonably smooth at the lower end of this spectrum (3GB of RAM).

I am not sure if Apple really want to change this situation, considering how well everything sells the way it does now. They will give us some more useful iPadOS tweaks this year, but I do not expect anything revolutionary.

I even would argue that iPadOS evolution isn‘t held back. The iPad is not intended to be a MacBook replacement. If someone mainly needs a keyboard/mouse/trackpad-driven computer, then they should buy a MacBook. Although you can buy the Magic Keyboard case (and it is a really good keyboard), this is not the intended use case for an iPad. The iPad (and iPadOS) is intended to be used/controlled with your fingers and with the Apple Pencil. And from that perspective, iPadOS is a really good OS.

Magsafe has to be exactly like in the MacBook, simply because the iPad already have magnets in the

I understand that the iPhone have a pluck for mounting accessories but

I do know quite a few people that don't want to, or have no interest in taking the time to find out what the iPad can really do. Some are intimidated at the thought of using a new operating system, some are happy with what they have always used and just don't want to learn a new OS, and some are just perfectly fine with the iPad being their media consumption device. These are all ok, but it doesn't change the fact that the iPad is a very capable device that can and has replaced a laptop for a large minority of people. I myself am pretty excited, happy, and proud of the fact that at 61 years old, I learned a new OS on a device that has replaced my need for a traditional laptop.

Now, all that being said, it is true that not everyone can realistically replace their laptop with an iPad. My wife is an electronic engineer and at its level of evolution the iPad is in no way advanced enough to replace a full desktop OS for the work she does. It is reasonable to accept that the iPad cannot be everyone's primary computer, just as it is reasonable to accept that it can replace a traditional computer for many people. I am fortunate that my Real Estate and property management work are easy for the iPad to handle, and will only get better as the OS evolves. I do stuff like (create, fill, and sign contracts), create and edit documents, (create, edit, and annotate pdf's), hand written notes, file management, time management, emails, texts, client communication, sketching house dimensions, taking house pictures, and occasionally reading some news, playing a game, or watching YouTube while waiting for a client. My iPad Pro easily replaces a laptop for me and even makes using a computer for work and personal life fun again. Unfortunately a lot of people will never bother to take the time to find this out, who potentially could.

Couldn‘t agree more.

The moment, the iPad started to make a lot more sense to me was when I started to use the Pencil as the main input device. This switch can be really hard when you‘re used to control a computer by keyboard/mouse/trackpad for decades. But the moment you get used to the Pencil, the iPad starts to feel like a magical device, in my case even to be a superior device to a laptop computer.

Why would I have to imagine that? I have the Logitech Combo Touch. There’s also the Magic Keyboard case. Bluetooth makes it virtually possible to use any combination of keyboard and mouse.
But this is not the intended use case for an iPad. For me, the iPad really makes sense to me, since I stopped using the Magic Keyboard case and started to use only my fingers and the Apple Pencil for doing things on the iPad. When you do that, the iPad becomes a totally other device then a mere laptop computer replacement.
