Still don’t understand why they don’t just make a small notch of it all. What’s the point of having screen between the whatever pill stuff and the top?

Some say it’s to make the phone more recognizable as an iPhone. Seems silly to me.

I'm not understanding how Apple perceived a pill to be a preferable improvement over a notch. What am I missing?

Best guess - they were trying to put them under the display and couldn't figure out how to make it work with the current displays that they have, so they did a cutout because they were too far down the track to change back to a notch on the larger models. Then they just fudged a solution to make it work with what they could achieve.

I had honestly grown fond of the separated pill and hole design that’s been rumored and mocked up for so long. I think making it a long pill in software is just gonna look weird

We have a notch. We have a pill. We have a hole. Oh no, it's a wide pill!

And while this was in the pill and hole phase, I was debating which one was the pill and which one was the hole until a Good Samaritan invented the term "punch hole", but then I looked at some old punchers that have an oval mark, and looked at my Aspirin and couldn't decide which one is which. It was a stressful time of my life folks. I was starting to question our assumptions about quantum mechanics and dark matter. I mean, what if we all got it wrong? And then the wide pill came and rescued us. The world is back in order.

Sounds like they’d already finalised the design and paid for all the required tooling (for the pill and dot cut out), then decided it looks stupid, “Uh oh, what do?”
“Just disable the pixels, job done.”

Having said that, I totally agree a continuous pill shape looks far better than the weird “i” shape with useless pixels jammed in between at all times.

But having said that, I’d prefer nothing obscuring the screen at all.

The case makers that assumed the space in between wouldn’t be used are now going to be blocking those indicators :)

To show the world you have a 14 and Not a 13.
Specifically iPhone 14 Pro (and Pro Max) and not regular iPhone 14 or any 13.

I wonder if limiting this to the Pro models is just a side effect of not expecting enough yield for the screen to cover all iPhone 14 models.

One long pill, at least when the display was on, is what I was originally hoping for and this is a pleasant surprise for me. I know someday everything will get squeezed into the top bezel, but until then, this will work for me.
