I'm open to a new experience having lived with the notch for so long now. I sure hope the bottom edge of the pill does not extend further down into the display than the notch already does. That would be rather disappointing.
The screen rumors say that the new screens with the punch outs are a few pixels taller. Exactly enough to compensate for the slightly lower position of the pill. Crossing my fingers that that rumor is true.

Crap I think my GF forgot to take her pill.
At least the new iPhone 14 Pro will remind her to take it, next time.

Yeah, I wonder about the same. What is the benefit to have the pixels there instead of just have one cutout? Seems like an odd choice
My guess is that’s where the privacy indicator lights will be placed.

That makes sense to me. But this statement in the article means the space is fully deactivated dead space:
Apple will deactivate the pixels in the dead space between the two cutouts to emulate a unified cutout
and as such might not have any kind of indicator there.

Thank god. The two differently sized cutouts looked horrible. I'm still going to wait for under-display Face ID but if my current iPhone spontaneously exploded and I had to get a new one I'd be ok with this design.

I think this is putting too much trust into the exact phrasing of a rumor. But, I’m just guessing 🙂

Given Apple's process and how far in advance they seem to lock things in, that seems unlikely. What's more likely is that we're just now learning about the pixel disabling now that we're so close to the event.
They’re locking in the hardware far in advance, not necessarily the software (witness changes during beta), hence my guess. But now that we know the space between the holes will be used for privacy indicators (see the more recent article), it may well have been planned from the beginning.

Anybody else underwhelmed by how irrelevant and dull this topic is? A different shaped notch rumoured and talked about like it’s something of a game changer when it’s simply an aesthetic change to get impressionable people to buy a new phone because it’s slightly different?
Yes i dont get the hype, its still a notch nothing new here really. I dont mind the notch or the pill.

Yeah, now that we know about those that makes perfect sense. Actually very smart space utilisation.

Glad it will have usage :)

Looking at the comparison of two vs one holes, that’s the difference between Apple and Android phones right there. Android makers will make it as small as possible. Apple makes it as small as possible that still looks nice. Knowing Apple’s affection for symmetry, the two hole solution was never going to fly.

No, whether it's a notch or a pill is not that exciting. I don't know if I've seen anyone talking about the different notch as a "game changer", it just seems like some people are interested in that piece because it will look different and there's been some confusion about how this would all shake out (a circle, a pill, a circle and a pill with space in the middle!?). I really don't think that this is a cynical ploy by Apple just to get people to upgrade. While people generally are more tempted to upgrade when the phone looks new and different, I don't view this as enough to move the needle on that front (at least for most people) to play any part in why Apple is making this change.
