Why would the monitor run iOS?
With the timing of universal control rollout.. somehow it makes sense. If the a10x/a12 comfortably drives a 4k display (AppleTV) then maybe the a13 can drive a 5k/6k?

It would be a good way of utilizing the full real estate of the screen without affecting the aspect ratio on an iPad.

I think people are getting leaks from the supply chain around specific components and reading a bit too much into it ????

Really hope that the price is competitive to other displays. Don't want an XDR 2.0

Ok now I'm getting excited! Makes more sense to move the iMac Pro into this form factor if it improves thermals and means you can upgrade the computer independent of the display. Less waste and more flexibility is always good. Will be interesting to see how iOS integrates. Built-in Apple TV and AirPlay? Use your iPhone to do color re-calibration? High-end camera system? True-tone? Also curious about speakers.

Hoping the SSD on the Mac Studio is upgradable but I'm not gonna hold my breath.

Probably won't buy it yet as my 2019 5K iMac is still great, but depending on the display specs and price I might be tempted to get the Studio Display at some point this year—assuming it works with my iMac? 120Hz Pro-Motion would be great. I'm curious when we can get a Mini LED 27" display for a decent price. If this is just LCD then I might hold off for another couple years until we get Mini LED or some burn-in resistant OLED tech and pick one up with either a Mac Studio or an M3 Max 14" MacBook Pro. I just get annoyed that my iPhone, iPad and TV all have crazy black levels but my iMac and second display still doesn't.
Almost 100% sure this new display won’t work with Intel Macs at all. I don’t have anything to back that up, but my Apple -Sense is tingling. I too have a perfectly decked out 2019 iMac (i9/Vega 48/64GB) that isn’t going anywhere for quite a while, but I got that queasy in my gizzard vibe. We’ll know soon enough.

Really think the article could have done a better job with differentiating.
this does not actually mean that the display itself will run a useer accessible version of iOS.
It just means it will be using an “A” series processor, probably just to control the backlight, manage display settings, proper macOS integration, etc.
Nothing more nothing less.

I disagree - this is absolutely the right move on the next gen of the iMac Pro legacy. Most semi-pro people have bought or would prefer to choose their monitor set up, but still want the power offered. Also - the chin look is getting really dated.
The iMac Pro always seemed like a stopgap for when they didn’t have another appropriate enclosure for a modern at the time Pro(Xeon based) Mac. That would’ve required a lot more than a taller Mac mini. Now that they’re redesigning the whole line and have a much less power hungry CPU and GPU, they can get that higher end standalone desktop that the trash can was supposed to be but failed at. Having more than one external display option also makes sense to separate the mid-high end desktop from the display, where before 27” was the best and only option.

Makes M2 unlikely to launch tomorrow.

"Good morning everyone, introducing the M1 Pro on Mac mini and M1 Ultra on Mac Studio. Oh, BTW, here's also M2."

?

The rumors of keeping the 13" with updated hardware have bugged me since the start. Seems like the obvious pairing with the M2 is a redesigned Air (or just drop the Air moniker and call it the "MacBook"). I'm hoping the adoption of their own silicon finally gets us back to a cleaner product line (like the iBook/PowerBook days).

And please, no iMac Pro, lol. I am hoping this combo completely does away with the need for that.

go along with the Mac Studio, Apple is rumored to have a "Studio Display" ready to go. Miani said that the Studio Display will feature a 27-inch size with slightly larger bezels than the Pro Display XDR, and now Gurman suggests that it will "run iOS," indicating a built-in A-series chip.

iOS ? Unless Apple is doing a complete 180 and this thing has a touch screen that makes about zero sense.

tvOS ? ( which is a limited derivation of iOS with the touch screen stuff toned way down so can use in a HomePod speaker ) yes . I don’t think this will be full blown AppleTV , but something closer to HomePod we’re not really an App Store.

Also could be realityOS ( reality OS that will go into the VR/AR if this isn’t an old off the shelf Aseries but yet another derivative like the T2 ) . If Apple has a chip the runs two 4K displays won’t be too hard to just run on 5k one Inn an even more constrained fashion.

Airplay and perhaps unvisersal control (i.e. complete wireless KVM ( keyboard video mouse ) control) .

The current M1 mini already offers much more space inside than the Intel model ever did.
Heat dissipation in these models is already much better than in the MBP.

There must be some additional motive for such a large case.
Maybe the scale is off.

Won’t matter if it’s not actually called M1Ultra, which I highly doubt.
I think the processors especially made for pro end desktops like the Mac Studio and the Mac Pro will get their own letter.
X1 or P1 or something different, to differentiate them since they will most certainly be on a completely different upgrade timeline than the regular “M” series chips.
Also if the Mac Studio gets an M1max and an M1Ultra, what on earth would a MacPro get?
M1ultraProMax?
No.
So it’s completely possible for them to launch an M2 as an updated mobile/power efficient processor, and then announce the X1 or whatever specifically targeted at professional end desktops, where power efficiency doesn’t matter as much

Sorry it makes no sense, as above what is all the space for. Its not for heat dissipation as the M1 Max is in a 14" laptop with much less space and runs fine. Too small for expansion cards and can't be space for ports. Perhaps for additional internal SSD's? As far as what ever chip inside runs too hot and needs the space, come on! Apple has been all about their chips efficiency, in laptops and desktops, why bail on that now?

Maybe a noob question, but what is the target user group for this? I'm in the market for an updated iMac, would this be an option?
I’m a trader and looking to replace my iMac with something Apple Silicon based. Still waiting for the updated larger iMac, but would really like at least two matching screens, with the ability to possibly add a third one later. Even if the updated larger iMac or iMac Pro came out, the second monitor would not match, unless the iMac were chinless. And I do not need the power of a Mac Pro tower, nor want to take up that much space, nor can I justify the cost for what is essentially, spreadsheets, charts, and browser tabs. This solution solves all my problems!

His logic is so broken tho, homepod and Apple TV run a chips and they don’t run iOS, yea it’s a fork of iOS but iOS itself is just a fork of macOS

What if the Studio Displays runs.... tvOS? Finally THE AppleTV everyone had been speculating? :D
"a new monitor running iOS is ready to go." Huh? o_O
As I just posted, from Mark:
“Running iOS = has an A-Series chip powering it.”
It does not mean that it will actually be running the full operating system.
Probably just using an “A” chip as a Display controller
