I’m a trader and looking to replace my iMac with something Apple Silicon based. Still waiting for the updated larger iMac, but would really like at least two matching screens, with the ability to possibly add a third one later. Even if the updated larger iMac or iMac Pro came out, the second monitor would not match, unless the iMac were chinless. And I do not need the power of a Mac Pro tower, nor want to take up that much space, nor can I justify the cost for what is essentially, spreadsheets, charts, and browser tabs. This solution solves all my problems!

I think that's what peeved me off the most in the past decade.

My monitors do not match anymore!

Come on apple. Let me match again!

Hot take: the name Mac Studio and the fact that it “runs iOS” implies to me that this is a multitouch display with support for Apple Pencil. Otherwise, the naming is a bit weird and I don’t know why Gurman would say it runs iOS if he only means it includes an A-series SOC (the HomePod and Apple TV’s also have A-Series SOC and very obviously do not run iOS).

Maybe a noob question, but what is the target user group for this? I'm in the market for an updated iMac, would this be an option?
Came here to ask this exact question. I do graphic design and a little photo/video editing. My intel iMac has had a few issues so I was looking to upgrade to the iMac Pro if/when it comes out but if this is a better upgrade I may go with it instead. Guess we’ll just have to wait and see how things play out.

THIS will be worth an event, not iPhone/iPad updates… so it should be interesting tomorrow but most importantly, for me, is the pricing…

If the Studio is real and priced correctly I‘ll be getting it. Probably only the Pro or low end Max though.

No idea why the monitor needs to run iOS though?

Maybe people like me, working from home now as well as the office, so I have a nice monitor and desk etc. I could squeeze an iMac 24” on the desk, just, but it wouldn’t be the best, but this machine with more power would be good and I use the same monitor.

Ok now I'm getting excited! Makes more sense to move the iMac Pro into this form factor if it improves thermals and means you can upgrade the computer independent of the display. Less waste and more flexibility is always good. Will be interesting to see how iOS integrates. Built-in Apple TV and AirPlay? Use your iPhone to do color re-calibration? High-end camera system? True-tone? Also curious about speakers.

Hoping the SSD on the Mac Studio is upgradable but I'm not gonna hold my breath.

Probably won't buy it yet as my 2019 5K iMac is still great, but depending on the display specs and price I might be tempted to get the Studio Display at some point this year—assuming it works with my iMac? 120Hz Pro-Motion would be great. I'm curious when we can get a Mini LED 27" display for a decent price. If this is just LCD then I might hold off for another couple years until we get Mini LED or some burn-in resistant OLED tech and pick one up with either a Mac Studio or an M3 Max 14" MacBook Pro. I just get annoyed that my iPhone, iPad and TV all have crazy black levels but my iMac and second display still doesn't.
Yeah, awesome point! I never could quite understand the market for the iMac Pro. People in that segment would mostly want at least dual monitors, and would be endlessly frustrated at not being able to get a matching 2nd monitor. Making it headless in the first place is obvious, and with the Mini not cutting it for power, and the Mac Pro much more expensive, the Studio is finally the answer.

I just wish these displays will be height adjustable. iMacs have terrible ergonomics and not having neck pain should not be a pro feature
The counterweighted Apple Studio Display of the late 1990s had one. Other than the original price ($2500) and the general quality of LCDs at the time, they were cool. I'd be happy to have one today, except preferably for a little less.

For iPad users who don’t care about this monitor running iOS, it would be the biggest chance to get 16:9/16:10 external monitor support for iPads now that the system will be capable of using this resolution

So.... Monitor that has iOS with Universal Control...I can them extend my MacBook Pro screen on to the 27" Studio Display! That's smart. Not allowing any other laptops to connect to it, very Apple. Only way is Universal Control.

As I just posted, from Mark:
“Running iOS = has an A-Series chip powering it.”
It does not mean that it will actually be running the full operating system.
Probably just using an “A” chip as a Display controller

That is semantic hocus locus. The equal signs basically connotes that it is equating with iOS No one said ” running iOS = T2 “ ( where T2 was largely a tweaked A series . ) or “ running iOS = AppleTV “ or “ running iOS = HomePod” . If it isn’t running the iOS system , then iOS isn’t really an indicator .

Doubtful the actual display controller. Probably more akin to the touch bar in MBP and some Apple proprietary , “magic” that have been applied to this device that will raise the price $100-300 when there is a much simpler solution possible ( like actual buttons and industry standard ports ).

Based on my experience with a plain old M1 iMac, I suspect my needs aren't great enough to take advantage of a Mac Studio. But (assuming this rumor bears out) it's a great sign if Apple is getting back into higher spec standalong Macs and actually affordable monitors.

So is this going to be a smart monitor (functioning like a smart TV) or is the A chip going to take some of the pressure off the GPU in the computer?

Regarding the A-Series chip, I mean it would be pretty cool if the monitor was smart enough to support AirPlay, and ideally even just Safari.

I love my ProDisplay, but I'd buy a few of these 27" monitors for the office and other rooms. Looking forward to tomorrow!

Mac Studio will replace the high-end 2018 Intel Mac mini, bridging the gap between the (new smaller design) Mn-series Mac mini and the full tower Mac Pro...

Mac Studio will go from a base single M1 Pro SoC model all the way up to a dual M1 Max SoC model:
  • Base model - 8/14, 16/512, Gigabit Ethernet, $1499
  • Fully loaded model - 20/64, 128/8T, 10Gb Ethernet, $6999
Four TB4/USB4 (USB-C) ports & two USB 3.1 Gen2 (USB-A) ports on the single SoC models...

Six TB4/USB4 (USB-C) ports & four USB 3.1 Gen2 (USB-A) ports on the dual SoC models...

Gigabit Ethernet standard, upgrade to 10Gb Ethernet is US$100...
