Just the wireless display aspect
If it is an AirPlay mirroring target like an AppleTV which also "only" has an A series chip, then it will suffice (in fact this is already possible on various TVs that run Android etc without Apple's chip)

For Universal Control to be involved not only do you need a Mac, but also input devices. For an MBP there is the built-in trackpad and KB, for an iMac or even the Mac Studio / mini you would have wireless mouse/KB, which are all independent of the connected display. The only meaningful scenario is like those 3rd party displays that also have built-in USB KVM, where the connected USB KB/mouse can be switched for various display input with an USB upstream cable (or type-C which would do it all together with the display). In that case Apple has stopped selling wired input devices for a long time already.

Therefore no, there is no use-case nor demand for Universal Control to be involved here.

I put "supposed to" in quotes because Ming-Chi Kuo seems to think that. I personally do NOT believe this - I think the AS Mac Pro will be announced at WWDC alongside M2.

Or, maybe M2 will be announced tomorrow, who knows. It's exactly 12 hours until the Apple event so we'll see then.
yea that twitter account should be taken with "salt" since Kuo never speak like that when he makes his predictions
We will have to wait for him to make a statement/prediction in his way
The mac pro and M2 will be presented this year for sure, the release to the consumers is another matter since in the fall the SoC priorities are for the iphone
But what if the smaller apple silicon is this new mac studio that will be presented today ?!

I REALLY hope the "Mac Studio" is announced, that will be a great addition to the Mac lineup.

What if the built-in A-series SoC in the new 27" 5K Apple Studio Display is also there so the display can actually serve AppleTV duties where your Mac Studio is shut down or sleeping...?

Its amazing how much this look like a 24" iMac with a only a pasted on image of Apples XDR display omitting the notch and chin. You think the YouTube guy could have done a better render.

The good thing is we will know which rumour mongers actually have inside sources and which are making stuff up (post the event).
Mind that will change nothing here, even the obviously made up rumours still get covered here.

I'd give up any hope of there being a Silicon iMac Pro... The original Intel iMac Pro was a stop gap machine for people that couldn't wait until the cheese grater Mac Pro was released and needed to upgrade their Trashcan, it was a band aid machine... That was it's job a pro machine that bridged the product space while Apple had nothing to offer in the pro space so they stopped haemorrhaging pro sales to PC...

If this Mac Studio and Studio monitor are a thing and it looks like they will be... this will effectively be the replacement for the iMac Pro. I semi pro level machine for folks that want a one off configurable machine but at a lower price point then a Silicon Mac Pro will be at...

I bet that a Mac Studio and Studio monitor will retail for about the same as a 16 core iMac Pro did...
Well said.

It almost certainly will work like that. The point of a discrete display is to be independent from a specific Mac, so users of MacBooks and Mac Pros or even minis will also use this as a vanilla directly attached display. If it can double duty as a n AirPlay target then all wireless Apple devices including iPhones and iPads can also mirror to it without a cable.

I mean...that's what the old Thunderbolt displays were to the iMacs. Removed chin and bam. Almost exactly the same design.

For iPad users who don’t care about this monitor running iOS, it would be the biggest chance to get 16:9/16:10 external monitor support for iPads now that the system will be capable of using this resolution
Yeah it’d be nice.

But I’d love them to bring target display back so I can use my 24” iMac as an external monitor too.
Apple could bring Sidecar / universal control together in a way that would make this work

I was waiting on new iMacs since last year to replace my 16" MBPro from 2019. However I recently had to purchase a new display to replace my broken (P.0.S.) 27" Ultrafine. I ended up getting a 34" 5k/2k Ultrawide, which so far I love. I wasn't really digging the idea of having a Mac mini and the Mac Pro is just way more computer than I need, so this rumored Mac Studio would probably fit in to my wants/needs quite nicely.

I'm guessing (if these rumors are true) that Mac Studio will start in the $2,499 range.

I’d really like a stand that lets me adjust the height of the monitor. Shipping a monitor where you cannot adjust the height is crazy.
You can buy the optional "iBook" risers in a variety of thicknesses to stack under the monitor to achieve the desired height. Each iBook is bound in environmentally friendly faux-leather and contains pages of profound quotations from Apple senior managers....

Things happen with a world-wide pandemic...!

As for more powerful variant SoC, M1 Ultra...?
  • 15-core CPU (12P/3E)
  • 48-core GPU
  • 16-core Neural Engine
  • 256GB LPDDR5X RAM
  • 500GB/s UMA
The more powerful SOC is almost certainly the rumored Jade2C or Jade4C, which are effectively two or four M1Max chips connected together. That would be 20/64 or 40/128, and my hope is that they would support RAM external to the chip, or otherwise they would be “limited” to 128 GB and 256 GB. Both seem like overkill to me but I am assured some workflows require more than that.

Wait - have we heard the “iOS on the display” mention before and I missed that? Regardless, it’s new to me and interesting. What potentials exist when your display is running an OS - in addition to your computer?

Could tomorrow debut some new hybrid OS scenario where iOS and macOS coexist in one symbiotic workflow - offering peek performance and further blurring the lines between OSes? It feels like a direction Apple has been working toward if not just an Apple-y thing to do (knowing it would be that type of polarizing evolution that would rankle the hardcore, get off my lawn base while exciting those looking for something fresh. No clue whether it’s technically possible or if users would want a hybrid OS. Just pre-event pondering. Tomorrow should be fun.
The Touch Bar was a “display that ran iOS” but I’m not sure how relevant that experience would be for a full display.

That display will be expensive AF. The stand by itself will cost $999 atleast.

The only reason to put an A-chip in the monitor and to run iOS/iPad OS on it is to enable touch screen / pen support on the screen. That will be a great combo together with the MacOS 12.3 with universal control.

Wireless AirPlay / Universal Control to drag windows onto it.

I was responding to a query about a hypothetical M1 variant for the Apple silicon Mac Pro...

Word is hardware interrupts will only allow dual M1 Max SoC configurations; another reason for the delay on the Apple silicon Mac Pro...? I don't know how stuff works...

Apple could unveil a new "Mac Studio" machine and a new display that runs iOS at the March 8 event, according to a last minute confirmation from Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. In a tweet, Gurman says that the Mac Studio and a "new monitor running iOS are "ready to go" and will likely be debuting tomorrow.

studio-display-and-mac-studio.jpeg

Earlier today, YouTuber Luke Miani shared renders of what he claims is the "Mac Studio," showing off a machine that features a design like a thick Mac mini. The "Mac Studio" features the same square-shaped design as the current Mac mini, but it measures in at four inches tall and it has a new thermal design to mitigate heat.

Miani said that the "Mac Studio" would "unequivocally" be announced during the spring event, and now it appears Gurman is backing that up.

We first heard the name "Mac Studio" last week from 9to5Mac, with the site describing it as a sort of Mac mini and Mac Pro hybrid device. Prior rumors have pointed toward both a high-end Mac mini and a smaller Mac Pro that are in development, and it appears that these rumors may have been talking about the same Mac Studio device.

The hybrid Mac Studio could replace the high-end Mac mini and it could be sold as a smaller alternative to the Mac Pro. It is not expected to be as powerful as the Mac Pro, but it is expected to use Apple's M1 Pro and M1 Max chips, along with an option for a more powerful version of the M1 Max.

To go along with the Mac Studio, Apple is rumored to have a "Studio Display" ready to go. Miani said that the Studio Display will feature a 27-inch size with slightly larger bezels than the Pro Display XDR, and now Gurman suggests that it will "run iOS," indicating a built-in A-series chip.

We've previously heard rumors about some kind of display with an A-series chip inside, though it was thought that such a display would be a Pro Display XDR successor. Instead, the monitor coming tomorrow is expected to be more affordable than the $5k Pro Display XDR, but no pricing information is available.

Apple's full plans for the Mac Studio and potential Studio Display will become clear tomorrow morning, with the "Peek Performance" event set to kick off at 10:00 a.m. Pacific Time.

Mac Studio will replace the high-end 2018 Intel Mac mini, bridging the gap between the (new smaller design) Mn-series Mac mini and the full tower Mac Pro...

Mac Studio will go from a base single M1 Pro SoC model all the way up to a dual M1 Max SoC model:
  • Base model - 8/14, 16/512, Gigabit Ethernet, $1499
  • Fully loaded model - 20/64, 128/8T, 10Gb Ethernet, $6999
Four TB4/USB4 (USB-C) ports & two USB 3.1 Gen2 (USB-A) ports on the single SoC models...

Six TB4/USB4 (USB-C) ports & four USB 3.1 Gen2 (USB-A) ports on the dual SoC models...

Gigabit Ethernet standard, upgrade to 10Gb Ethernet is US$100...

I'd be down for this Mini Studio has to have Mutli monitor support 3 or more, at least 4 USB C slots

Just getting my Apple Bingo selections down before later.
Screen that runs iOS would be a Touchscreen, Mini Studio priced from $2.5k Screen at $799.
Still comes with base 8GB Ram and 256GB SSD
New iMac with speed bump and price increase
iPhone SE 3
Sneak Preview of Apple Glasses ahead of June WWDC Dev Drop

I disagree - this is absolutely the right move on the next gen of the iMac Pro legacy. Most semi-pro people have bought or would prefer to choose their monitor set up, but still want the power offered. Also - the chin look is getting really dated.
its aweful
