I take full responsibility. I'm pretty sure Apple read the forum comments and said, "Oh yeah, lotones wants hi-res audio on the next Apple TV. You know what... he's right! Hey Phil, call the guys and have them push back the next Apple TV...!"

So, sorry, and you're welcome. 😏

I actually still have that 2015 Apple TV. Still used daily and still going strong. I don’t have a 4K TV though :)

When the time comes to replace it, a 4K (or perhaps 8K if you wait a little longer) AppleTV will work just fine with a 1080p HDTV. Scaling down from higher resolution to lower resolution is no problem at all. Every time you look at a photograph on your TV screen, you are likely looking at one shot with well beyond 4K resolution scaled down to your 1080p screen.

Similarly, if you hook up a Blu Ray player to your TV and insert a 4K Blu Ray disc, you will see 1080p as good as it can look by it scaling down that 4K video to 1080p: no problem at all.

What works much worse is trying to go the other way: that is, scaling up from a low resolution source to a higher resolution monitor. In that scenario you are asking the computing device to invent pixels NOT in the source. Obviously, that can't be as good. Too many of us will rail against upgrading AppleTVs to the next resolution tier on this idea that everyone would have to toss the TV they have. That's not true at all. Instead, a hypothetical 16K AppleTV would connect and fill your 1080p TV with impressive 1080p video just fine.

So when the time comes, don't be confused about needing a matching (resolution) TV. That's commonly imagined but absolutely not true. Downscaling is no problem at all.

IMO, WWDC should be just about software. As fun as it is for Apple to announce hardware, it feels weird to me when they do it at this software event.

Plus, I never expected the Apple TV to be refreshed at this time. That rumor didn’t make sense to me, since I’d anticipate an A18 or A19 chip in the next Apple TV, depending on when it is released.
at the risk of sounding like an oldhead, it seems like the new age of WWDC has made a lot of people forget that its whole, original, intended point, was to be a yearly conference about all Apple software. that newfound perception is definitely not surprising—Apple has understandably dedicated a lot of time to talking about Apple Silicon in the past couple years, parlaying it into new hardware—though it’s always good to see a potent focus on software (particularly at a time when it feels like UX across Apple’s OSes is leaving a sour taste in everyone’s mouth).

as I’ve said before (this actually might be the one sentiment I’ve repeated the most across my time on MR), would love to see a whole WWDC dedicated to fixing as many bugs across OSes as humanly possible, with no major feature announcements. both the company and shareholders alike may be surprised by what that nets for the company’s brand image. alas, WWDC’24 will be the year of Apple + AI. let’s hope they don’t fumble the bag!

Let's hope that Apple A.I. can be asked to track down all xOS bugs and fix them... a Snow Leopard A.I. ;)

I'm right with you and would welcome a year or TWO if necessary of nothing but bug fixes/refinement vs. new features. I miss "just works" Apple. And "not just works" Apple that continues nickel & diming... and hundred-ing & thousand-ing their base at every opportunity is a poor combination that is souring my view of them... so much so that I now also have a PC on my desk and am not too far from opting for a PC laptop for the first time in my life.

I miss "just works" and I miss the U in USB meaning what it is supposed to mean just for starters.

Hardware announcements have been going on at WWDC since the early 2000s

I would also love this

I can. On one tv I keep pausing the broadcast when I only intended to mute the sound.
That’s a difference with the newer aluminum remote over the previous black glass one, not the AppleTV device itself.

You can use the newer aluminum remote on the older AppleTVs to gain the use of a mute button.

I think the user you replied to is hinting at how the button layout changed between remotes

What used to be Play/Pause is now "Mute" with Play/Pause above it (and Siri on the side of the remote)

Why does anyone pay attention to him?
Why do you?

At this point, the most annoying thing about Gurman‘s predictions is the comments complaining about them.

There’s a Gurman newsletter on Bloomberg each Sunday, with the predictable MacRumors articles reporting on it. You know it is coming, and you could just ignore it.

Bloomberg's Mark Gurman does not expect Apple to announce any new hardware during its WWDC 2024 keynote on June 10.

apple-tv-4k-yellow-bg-feature.jpg

"There's no hardware slated to be announced at WWDC, unless Apple unexpectedly previews a new device launching later (to be clear: I don't expect that)," said Gurman, in his Power On newsletter today.

Notably, Gurman now says a new Apple TV model "isn't imminent," despite previously reporting that Apple was aiming to release a new Apple TV in the first half of 2024. The current Apple TV was introduced in October 2022.

Here is when the previous five Apple TV models were announced:

  • Third-generation Apple TV 4K: October 2022
  • Second-generation Apple TV 4K: April 2021
  • First-generation Apple TV 4K: September 2017
  • Apple TV HD: September 2015
  • Third-generation Apple TV: March 2012

The next Apple TV is rumored to feature a faster processor than the current A15 Bionic chip, and even lower pricing. Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo suggested that the next Apple TV could have a $99 starting price in the U.S., down from $129 currently.

No major design changes have been rumored for the next Apple TV specifically, but Gurman said Apple has considered adding a built-in camera to a future model. tvOS 17 added a FaceTime app to the Apple TV, allowing for users to have video calls on the TV, but this currently requires using the rear camera on a connected iPhone or iPad.

Well, a new Apple TV is definitely either coming soon or not coming soon, so I guess he is right about it one way or another.

Why does anyone pay attention to him?

He was the only person who predicted an M4 in the iPad, and had arguably the biggest scoop with that for the last few years.

Not sure why everyone ***** on his rumor reporting, he's right way more often than not. Honestly think some people are weird about him, it's really clear he has good sources.

Yep it’s really weird considering this is a rumors site and he’s the main supplier of the rumors. He should have a statue on the front page.

Although people are saying av1 would be welcomed… How long until AV1 is widespread supported and used in apps and streaming.. All the current chrome casts and cable provider boxes won’t have support for it (the ones with apps you can download). It’s going to take years before av1 is needed and supported

Waiting for dual boot macOS / iOS to come to the iPad and iPhone. It’s powerful enough Apple.

Captain obvious. And yet people still under delusion that WWDC is about hardware. I miss the time when this website readers are smarter than Siri.

Bummer
There goes my outside hope for the iPad Mini 7, some M4 MacBooks or an updated Apple TV

Sounds like a entire presentation about "AI stuff coming later this year"
👎

Major "meh" for me

So many product lines are just in really weird spots of "not much has happened in a long time"
Apple seems to have really screwed the pooch with Car & VR headset distractions and now trying to throw an AI hail mary
And the AI stuff will probably be released slowly. Some things announced this summer may not come until December, or January or May or whenever. To me, even if everything is released today, it's already more than a year too late.
