Maybe saving M chip for Apple TV for when Nvidia make the next Tegra to use in next gen Shield.

I have been waiting for a new AppleTV for a long time.
Oh well…
The truth is that after I started watching Movies in my Vision Pro, nothing compares (movie theater, iMax, 82” TV, 120” projector, etc) to it.

"There's no hardware slated to be announced at WWDC, unless Apple unexpectedly previews a new device launching later (to be clear: I don't expect that)," said Gurman
That is a classic.

I can make all sorts of predictions too:

  1. There will be no new rockets to the moon, unless a space-faring nation previews one.
  2. There will be no new Atari game consoles, unless Warner Brothers Games unexpectedly announces one.
  3. There will be no new flavor of Progresso soup, unless General Mills unexpectedly announces one.
  4. <fill in your own example here>

Bloomberg's Mark Gurman does not expect Apple to announce any new hardware during its WWDC 2024 keynote on June 10.

"There's no hardware slated to be announced at WWDC, unless Apple unexpectedly previews a new device launching later (to be clear: I don't expect that)," said Gurman, in his Power On newsletter today.

Notably, Gurman now says a new Apple TV model "isn't imminent," despite previously reporting that Apple was aiming to release a new Apple TV in the first half of 2024. The current Apple TV was introduced in October 2022.

Here is when the previous five Apple TV models were announced:

  • Third-generation Apple TV 4K: October 2022
  • Second-generation Apple TV 4K: April 2021
  • First-generation Apple TV 4K: September 2017
  • Apple TV HD: September 2015
  • Third-generation Apple TV: March 2012

The next Apple TV is rumored to feature a faster processor than the current A15 Bionic chip, and even lower pricing. Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo suggested that the next Apple TV could have a $99 starting price in the U.S., down from $129 currently.

No major design changes have been rumored for the next Apple TV specifically, but Gurman said Apple has considered adding a built-in camera to a future model. tvOS 17 added a FaceTime app to the Apple TV, allowing for users to have video calls on the TV, but this currently requires using the rear camera on a connected iPhone or iPad.

I don’t know why but I’m feeling lately that apple has lost its magic. it’s all rehashed stuff and flops. Honestly, it’s time for new leadership and a team focused back on what made apple so good. They have missed the entire boat on AI. They aren’t consistent. There’s never any surprises anymore. It’s all stuff that is great but nothing groundbreaking. And please stop with the dumb video recorded announcements. Do it live and in front of a huge audience and then do the ”one more thing” and give us hope that apple is still alive.

For me hardware at WWDC makes perfect sense. They're saying 'here's the software, now here are the tools for you to go and develop for it'.
Apple does show hardware sometimes, where it is particularly when there is new software associated with it, but sometimes just when their hardware schedule needs a venue to announce something. It seems like they just aren’t ready with any particular hardware this year or they have some much software that they want to focus on that.

Disappointing to hear that there will be no new Macs announced at WWDC. Was also expecting to see a new cheaper Apple TV

The last time Apple did this, with putting Siri suggestions everywhere, I immediately turned them all off. Siri is useless for anything beyond setting timers and basic stuff like that. I am not expecting anything better now. They've had over a decade to improve Siri and they have no ideas. So there's no way they've suddenly figured it out in the last year.

But they have not done this year either.
Apple has wasted it's time on the non existent car, then focussed on a VR Headset, whilst missing the boat on AI that others were hard at work on.
They are simply paying other companies who have done all the work to use their AI services and try and bolt them onto Siri.

Apple is losing its cool factor.

They need to push hard on both software and hardware. New colors for AirPods, new accessories , upgrade existing accessories (Magic Mouse:keyboard). Their lead is evaporating. They need a fresh leader. Tim is cooked.

Maybe saving M chip for Apple TV for when Nvidia make the next Tegra to use in next gen Shield.

Sorry but that just isn’t going to happen. They won’t put the M series chip in the Apple TV as it would be so overkill it’s silly. Plus it would need a total redesign with a fan as that’s far too small with a power supply built in to handle the heat without a fan.
And Nvidia won’t make a new Shield TV, they have actually made several new Tegra chips over the years that are suitable replacements and they’ve never used them to upgrade it, also the chip in the new Nintendo Switch is a custom part for Nintendo, it doesn’t need DLSS and ray tracing to run Netflix. Nvidia is all about game streaming now now making a small Apple TV competitor that can play games well. I would except Nvidia to cancel the Shield TV soon if anything.

Wouldn’t that necessitate a fan or something. The addition of an AV1 hardware decoder and improved thermal management wouldn’t allow Apple to lower the price. They might have to raise it.

With an M chip it would, I doubt VERY that will ever end up in the Apple TV, but the A17 Pro chip in the iPhone 15 Pro has hardware AV1 decoding built in, no idea if the M4 even has it?

So when that chip comes to the lower iPhones I’d expect they will put it in an updated Apple TV this year or next. It will give it ray tracing abilities then too, well to an extent anyway. And work with it the current thermal design as it’s designed for an iPhone already.

Personally I have no intention of upgrading my lovely second gen 4K Apple TV, it works perfectly fine and I use it daily practically.

You aren’t thinking longer term though. Having a M chip in the ATV would mean the newer AAA titles that you are now able to play on the newer Macs, iPhones and iPads of this world could then make their way to the ATV and thus providing a true ”play anywhere” experience. Nothing stopping Apple doing a redesign if they so wish to facilitate such a thing.

To be honest, new Apple TV is not needed. The chipset in current is overkill.

Games! An ATV Console would be a great 'one more thing' - They could ironically become a console powerhouse, but I am sure the form factor would have to change from the the ATV for cooling.

The base M4 is now technically faster than than a Xbox S. The M2 Max is about 10% Faster Than the PS5.

All the indications are that the WWDC keynote will be software focussed and if they want us to be talking about AI then that’s understandable. However if the top of the range machines (the Mac Studio and the Mac Pro) remain on M2 based processors then it’s a misstep by Apple. If Gurman is right and those machines aren’t updated for up to another year then it’s an even bigger mistake and many professional Mac users will be seriously annoyed.

My hope is that those machines are updated soon and it’s announced via a press release.

AI creates more problems than it solves.
That is a very uneducated view of the state and development of AI.

Cars are bad in some ways, but the fact it gets you from point A to point B 100x faster than a horse is the main point.
You're looking at cars with 100 years of development, this technology matured a long time ago.
Let's not forget what was said in the first years: gasoline is expensive to produce, there are no gas stations, no road network, asphalt roads!? Very expensive and long to build.

With cars, we basically have a repeat of the discussion from a century ago when it comes to electric cars. Where were they a decade ago and where are they now?

Every breakthrough development encounters resistance from part of society.

The latest gen Apple TV 4K really doesn't need any hardware updates. When I first heard about this rumour, I was thinking it was dubious at best. I could imagine Apple TV one day introducing advanced features like using HomePods for surround sound (more than 2 speakers at once), but that would probably require new HomePod updates first.
Yeah I think that about an Apple TV, my first 4k one which I think is 2019 model still feels fast

One day they will be able to squeeze something with the power of an Xbox into Apple TV. I’d buy that.

The Apple TV isn’t a games console, will NEVER be a games console, the A chip is more then good enough for its designated purpose. Also the iPhone will never see the full M chip either, by the way reports have already claimed thr new iPad Pro with the M4 chip is thermal throttling in some situations, and you think they’ll put it in a phone?

And huge profits stop them from facilitating these things.

And so why is that? What games do you think it’ll have? Literally a handful of decent premium games run on the M chip, all the rest are the usual freemium shovelware in the App Store. Hardly the quality and quantity a proper games console has.

I think Gurman is wrong… however… Apple did release the trash can Mac Pro and the butterfly keyboard for a few years..

While it’s not a “problem” just yet, the next Apple TV is going to need the AV1 hardware decoder. It’s worth the wait. I suspect that requirement is working against a low price-point right now.

Did not know this, and just read up on AV1 and Apple.

I appreciate your comment, hoping to see AV1 on the AppleTV in the next update
