I just hope they change the actual material of the case.
It should be made out of aluminum in an ideal world, but even just Apple’s AirPods like polycarbonate would be better than what’s there now.

Apple's next-generation iPad Pro will launch alongside a redesigned Magic Keyboard accessory that makes the device more laptop-like, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman.

In the latest edition of his "Power On" newsletter, Gurman said that the next-generation iPad Pro will be the first major update to the product since 2018, introducing "fundamental changes." The new models, apparently codenamed "J717," "J718," "J720," and "J721," will feature the M3 Apple silicon chip, OLED displays, and 11- and 13-inch size options.

Along with the significant overhaul of the tablet itself, the updated version of the Magic Keyboard for iPad will offer a larger trackpad, addressing criticisms of the current model, and "makes the iPad Pro look even more like a laptop than the current setup."

The new iPad Pro and Magic Keyboard are not expected to debut until the spring or early summer of 2024, and anything other than minor updates to the other iPad models are not anticipated to arrive before then. The significant refresh to the product line could boost Apple's sluggish tablet sales next year.

If this gets announced at WWDC 2024, I somehow expect an iPadOS 18 overhaul with more "pro" features.

Apple may want to avoid the same burst of criticism they faced when they released the M1 iPad Pro, i.e. pro hardware crippled by a lacking OS.

Fingers crossed.

Even though I find the iPad cumbersome for the simplest task like moving files around, I love it for studying and reading to my kids. I spend each night using it to teach them to read and do math, and we use it at bedtime for books that I have scanned into pdf form. Pop it into the Magic Keyboard and I can take care of notes and emails. I’m really looking forward to the next iteration!

Laptop iPads are 😴

The Pencil is mightier than the keyboard. It is strange a new iPad keyboard arrives before a next generation Pencil. 👈🏻

And it turns out the “new” design is additional esc and numbers keys, 😂
Seriously, yes keyboard had issues (lack of esc, volume and numbers keys) but the biggest problem is iPadOS limitation to make it as laptop replacement and pro apps.

Also what are the “fundamental changes” coming to the iPad? Plural? OLED and what else? M3? Is it fundamentally different than M2 or is Gurman referring to something else?
could be talking about a slightly new design.
With the 2018 iPad Pro, the iPhone 12 and the M1 iMac apple went all the way in on the flat squared off edges.
But it seems like they’ve been backing off of that a bit lately with the rumors of the iPhone 15 being slightly curved and the new MacBooks having rounded edges on the bottom and the Series 7 Apple Watch and Ultra.
So I wouldn’t be surprised if the iPad gets the same flat screen with slightly rounded edges on the back design they seem to be quickly becoming a fan of again.

I think the physical keyboard itself was the real turning point (good or bad), not the trackpad on the keyboard. Once the keyboard was made, a trackpad (or mouse support) was inevitable due to ergonomic reasons—ie. “gorilla arm”.
There was a physical keyboard with the original iPad from day one.
And of course you were able to attach Bluetooth keyboards from day one, and there were landscape keyboards immediately.

I found out by experience that the Apple key board for iPad was lacking. I have used the Bridge keyboards with all my versions of iPad 11. No complaints. And it is backlit in the keys and a large trackpad area.

One pays to make a choice and thus lives with the result. Not all Apple accessories are wonderful and finding a great third party is wonderful.

Love it! If only I didn’t just upgrade to a M2 12.9. Looking forward to this if it comes with OLED I will probably upgrade.

I have a 2018 iPad Pro with Magic Keyboard. It's the best iPad I've ever owned and it's incredible that today in 2023 it STILL works incredibly well. I'm inclined to buy a 2024 update as I've gotten my money's worth out of the one I have but I have to say I need more than OLED and a bigger track pad on the new iPad to justify spending $1200+ on a new setup... Apple NEEDS to make a break through on software and the fact my iPad works so well nearly 6 years later with iPadOS 17 is a sign they haven't.
Maybe theyll just release an updated keyboard that’s compatible with current iPads and we can buy that and feel upgraded enough for a couple more years

Sounds like the next iPad Pro is simply going to get a faster processor and always on display. No word on a repositioned front camera or revised form factor.

Newly designed keyboard, 10 dollars to make, sells for 300 dollars 🙄

I have an M2 MBA and basically use my iPad as a touch only device during vacation, so I never really saw the need for a an iPad Pro or a Magic Keyboard. On the other hand, my wife has an iMac plus the iPad Air with Magic Keyboard, and she loves this combo. Everyday, she uses her iPad like a laptop, and she hates laptops....so, go figure. Different strokes different folks.

One of Apple's biggest mistakes was adding a cursor to the iPad. iPad is a touch first device, so it should be a touch first device. Magic keyboard with trackpad makes no sense and it's a classic case of listening to the customer who is wrong. Imagine when the iPhone was first released and everyone complained about a lack of keyboard so Apple shrinks the screen and adds a keyboard to the iPhone.

Apple should just ditch the magic keyboard and trackpad IMO. Let iPad be iPad and let Mac be Mac.

What makes even less sense is a touchscreen Mac. Hope Apple never makes one. Such an incredibly stupid idea.
This is an arrogant post. What makes you think what you think is correct and overwhelming majority of people who love iPad and Magic Keyboard are not?

Blame the app devs for not going all the way, I’m not surprised either. But in apps that do support the trackpad and keyboard, they work exactly how I’d expect a Macbook to.

Not for me. Some apps don't respond to mousewheel as good as MacBook apps do.
The actual cursor doesn’t really snap, that’s just visual.
Incorrect. Hover over an app icon and very slowly move the mouse. I can move my mouse from one side of my table to the other side without ever having the cursor highlight the next app. It snaps the pointer to the center of the icon.

Apples direction with The iPad pro model is all over the place because they can no longer justify the price by keeping the iPad gimped. So now they are slowly turning it into a laptop.
imagine paying 2000$ for a computer which can’t even format an ssd. Or better yet backup directly to a drive.
being upset at the lack of focus, and the fact that people are complaining about the lack of focus is waste.
we need Apple to give value for money, rather than gimmicks like hover mode, and stage manager. Just flesh out the iPad workstation. and Add a damn sd card reader in a pro device which is advertised as a photographer, and designer must have.

As many other mentioned, it's optional. iPad remains a touch first device, it's not even close to be a trackpad/mouse first device.

And without a cursor and keyboard support, we wouldn't get universal control, which is a great way to provide additional usability to a touch-first device when using a Mac.

I'm all for giving options and let the consumers chose the setup that fits them best. If I recall, touch input is still enabled on iPad, so you can continue to ditch other input methods.

Yet, universal control was turned on by default and when I attempted to move my cursor from my MacBook to my Mac mini, it jumped to the iPad. I attempted to move my cursor back, but it just disappeared from both devices. Had to reboot my machine.

Pretty sure my parents wouldn't know how to turn this feature off. It's been forced on customers.
