I might as well face facts. The company I liked a decade ago, even five years ago, is gone. This is the new Apple. Rich ... and apparently stupid. I used to be a Tim Cook supporter. Not any more. He is not as obnoxious, but he's becoming more and more Balmer-esque in terms of missteps he's making (at least what I perceive to be missteps).

The saddest part about "Planet of the Apps" is that it goes against one of the basic mantras that Steve Jobs lived by:

"How to we create something that no one has ever thought of before."

Jobs believed that accomplishing creative success required thinking out of the box. One other notable quote that may (or may not) have came from Henry Ford was: "If I asked people what they wanted they would have told me "Faster Horses"".

"Planet of the Apps" will just try to glorify an "accepted path to success" for app development on Apple's iOS platform, and by doing so, it will filter out innovation.

At the beginning of the App Store, Apple really had an open system that let customers / users decide what was successful. Now, with the elimination of ALL app store discoverability features, and adding their stupid Featuring system, they've completely thrown it away. Their stupid direction has put them in a bad place now with developers. This TV show idea is just another stupid idea to try to move forward down their failing path. The "Corporate yes man" culture cancer has run its course through Apple's brain - beyond stage 4... Rotten mush to the core...

Apple really is exhibiting the glib arrogance it was always accused of (falsely, then) to an unrecognisable-getting degree.

I'll continue to buy Macs for strictly technical reasons: they are the best hardware running one of the best OSes. As a side benefit, I'm glad the company prioritizes environmentalism, social issues like diversity/equality/LGBT rights, they try harder than any other company manufacturing in Asia to ensure worker rights and environmentalism in their business partners, and they've made a stance I like in the privacy/encryption debate.

And industrial designers. And engineers. Under Jobs, it used to be that techies and designers would rule the roost and project management/global supply chain complied. With Cook, it's the other way around. A more conservative execution engine rather than a pushing-the-envelope engineering engine. One big corporate groupthink, that tries to make up for it with inane glitzy PR. Oh how far this Apple has fallen.

...having been an Apple defender for years, unless they have some really cool stuff they've been holding back to release this fall, I'm moving to PCs and Windows 10.

I'm not willing to pay extra for looks and Apple's competitors have caught up in build quality and surpassed them in value now (i.e. same quality, lower price).

Well, you and I disagree on where we'd find refuge if Mac hardware continues to languish: I'm already running Ubuntu on my main laptop, and would go to the effort to run BSD if I have to to stay away from Windows.

But I agree that Apple better wow with the hardware upgrades this September. I'm glad they're being raked over the coals right now for their old Mac lineup, encouraging them to never let them get this old again. They've even lost Gruber: he's lamenting the Mac lineup on his podcast.

I already am running Windows as I am a relatively serious gamer, but it I abandon Mac I can plow my money that would have gone into a Mac and a PC into just one machine instead of two and it will be a freaking monster.
