I'd love to know what happened, but I doubt Apple paid that group anything.

Maybe they got caught, but I doubt it. It would be stupid of Apple to pay the ransom - other groups would take notice and make Apple their prime target.
Don’t try to blackmail the richest company in the world.

It won’t end well for you.

I guess the hackers never watched a godfather movie, you never extort money from the mafia. You might as have put a big red target on your chest. Hey U.S government cyber security team can you do us a favor, and find them for us? Discount on your next Mac Pro tower orders :)

I don’t think anybody paid directly or on behalf of Apple. Anybody paying that ransom would mean repeat targeting of Apple. I suppose it was dealt with legally. Take it down or face the onslaught.

Or, it was probably a nice little PR.

What, exactly, did the hacker group think was worth $50m to Apple? Sure, Apple might have wanted to keep the fact that it’s planning to reintroduce an SD slot or remove the TouchBar under wraps until *they* decide to reveal it, but so what if it gets out early! It’s not like the vast majority of people even get to know what this group decides to leak - pretty much just nerds like us read this stuff.
And it isn’t exactly earth-shaking new technology that we’re talking about here. It’s not like Apple’s laptop competitors will use this info to get one over on Apple as a result of a leak.

I’m gonna guess Apple didn’t pay up. And finding a rat in one of these groups isn’t too hard, since the rats can be anonymous to authorities. And the price of hiring someone to work this angle against the would be ransomers is far less than 50M. REvil got greedy with this number and I suspect that Apple may have some leverage against them now. That leverage plus apple’s considerable resources would be intimidating and Apple has no qualms about playing dirty.

So you admit Apple is a criminal organization?

I don’t think they paid the ransom. My work company for example has strict guidelines when it comes to ransomware attack. We only coordinate them to law enforcement and not pay any ransom.
