I might play through HL2 again just for the hell of it, but TF2 is really the game I'm waiting for.

any word on them porting half-life 1?
The announcement of Steam for Mac mentioned the Half-Life series so we might get Half-Life: Source.

People have been heralding the death of PC gaming for over a decade. It hasn't happened yet nor was it happening then. It's changing, yes.. It's sure as hell not dying off.

^ PC gaming has been dying since the SNES days, apparently. It's just a funny thing some people say.

The GoldSrc engine is not and will not be ported, apparently.
Was it ever ported to the Source engine?

Funnily enough, there was a Mac port of HL1 but it was never released.

HL1 was ported to Source, it's available on Steam.
According to this they are trying to bring GoldSrc over at least.

It's interesting because the source engine that is used by Half-Life 2 will be used on the new Half-Life episode 3, (if ever released), and also by Portal 2. Half-Life 2 may be old but is a valid test/proof of concept for any newer game that uses the source engine on the MAC platform.

@IRISHMAN props to you, I now see I said the same as you, good stuff for sure.

If I recall correctly, one of the virtues of the Source engine was that Valve designed it from the start to be modular, allowing them to upgrade portions of it without having to reinvent the wheel when they wanted to add current (and next-gen) game engine features.

The version of Source used for Episode 3 and Portal 2 will be very different than the Source version used for Half Life 2.

Ah, I hadn't seen that.
I read earlier today that GoldSrc wasn't being considered but I'd trust Gabe. ;)

Gaming on the Mac has never been as good as it was in the late 90's and early 2000's when Westlake, Aspyr, Bungie, iD and Macsoft were involved.

Adding some of Valve's small catalog of games isn't going to change it. PC gaming is scaling back as it is so whatever dribbles down to the Mac will be an even smaller number of titles.

Too late Apple, too late Valve.

I disagree. I remember the majority of the games that were released by Westlake, Aspyer and Macsoft were simply terrible; filled with graphical glitches and had terrible performance.

This isn't just about adding Valve's small (yet incredibly influential) library to the Mac. It's about providing a means of distributing games to a new platform. If the Valve catalog sells well on the Mac, 3rd party game companies who are using Steam as a means of distribution might also consider porting their PC-Only games to the Mac.

This isn't too little too late for either company. In fact, I think this is just the beginning of Mac gaming.

I like the constant updates on Portal. I need to try it again on my iMac after the performance updates.

Portal performs perfectly well on my iMac...instead of whining and stupid complaints about Apple's "lack of support" for gamers (which is utter BS, of course), these guys prove that when political will and technological prowess are there, the Mac can be the BEST gaming platform that there is.

Congrats, Valve - YOU ARE DELIVERING.

Hmm, well Half Life 2 is ages old, I don't see how this is surprise.. Its been on the PC platform for ages.. Even then you won't be able to run it unless you have a higher end mac, I mean I tried on my 21.5" mac and it lags on native resolution..

iMacs, Mac Pro's & Mac Mini's are horrible for any gaming, even the higher end 27" iMacs are not capable of running games at the native resolution 2560 x 1440.. possibly older games would be fine, but the newer ones would not.. good luck trying to play crysis at even medium settings :p

I run Portal at native resolution on my 27" iMac @ 30 fps. It might not be the newest game, but it's newer than HL2.

Not my impression. Even using Voodoo beta drivers.

And if you think games were buggy back then, yet again you are not paying attention to the PC gaming market.

Every single console port that hits the PC is almost guaranteed to be a disaster.

hey, with HL2 ep2 is it like a stort of add-on for hl2? or is it a completely new game, becuase i can see now on steam HL2 is £13 and HL2 ep 2 is £7, so what im asking is if you need to buy HL2 in order to play HL2 ep2?

Yes it is. I'm a big PC gaming enthusiast and spend a good chunk of money on high-end hardware and even I can see the decline. Not only the quality of ports but the reduced number that there are.

You only need to look at Alan Wake to see an example of the culling.

If it wasn't for Eastern European game developers, there would only be Blizzard aiming for the PC platform first. For everyone else it's an afterthought and reluctant support.

edit: and as more evidence of the "console effect" on the PC gaming market, BFG Tech is shutting down it's graphics card business because it isn't profitable any more.

Bitter about what?

Being around when Mac gaming was in it's prime and enjoying hacking PC Voodoo cards to run them and the massive mod scene of UT?

Or that I play all my games now on consoles and an SLI equipped PC?

By all means, keep on pining for the olden days, while you play with your consoles and your PC. It must be nice company in all the bitterness and negativity.

You really need to look up the definition of "bitter" because you really don't comprehend it's meaning.

Why would I pine for the olden days? I haven't used the Mac as a gaming tool in a decade and have no inclination to now. I don't need it.

This ad rocks! About time a company like Valve jumps on-board the MAC, hopefully this inspires other game developers to create faster better ports of their Windows games for the MAC, ( refuse to use PC since a MAC is a PC as well :D). They may even decide to use Steam which I like a lot on my Windows PC.

I'm not a gung-ho gamer myself but yea this AD was pretty good... but WTF, they couldn't consult with an audio engineer before releasing it? The echos from the different footsteps, the drones, the renegade and the guards would have been a SUPER nice touch but okay I'd let that pass even tho it could have really added a sense of urgency to this short... but what the hell were they thinking with the screen explosion.

How could anyone walked away from that and said YEA thats perfect, lets not change a thing!

Plus how many pc gamers out there have up to date rigs anyway? Mac gamers don't need the games to full maxed out with 32x AA etc. Medium to high will do most of us. Considering we wouldn't need to bootcamp into windows to play games is great. How many mac users install windows just for the purpose of playing games? Having it native would rock so much more.

Thank you, that's exactly my problem with so many "Perfectionists" on here, so many people here act so holier than though as if they or the majority of PC users have hardware that matches up to the highest settings of the latest games. I can bet not even 10% of the PC world has high-end gaming rigs. Most people have average hardware particularly when it comes to Windows machines. If most people keep their PC up to date consistently then they have too much time on their hands.
