Can't wait to get home today... I had the PC version of HL2 on Transgaming on Linux but never got around to finishing it. It'll be easier to finish on my 27" iMac :)

Just came here to say HELL YEAH and also that my fellow Mac enthusiasts, for having some great taste otherwise, have some absolutely hilarious opinions on gaming -- but some really good ones too. :D

BTW I am pretty sure that if you already have HL (2 or Gold) I think you can always pop the key into Steam to keep your license safe as you can re download the install files whenever, wherever, even on a Mac.

Terrible troll is terrible. They are comparing specs with Portal, which was coded natively in DirectX for Windows. You lose a hell of alot when trying to convert it to GL.

Take a game coded evenly, such as Blizzard's World of Warcraft. All settings even, I ran at cap on my 4gb 2.53gHz Macbook. While that was running at 50, similar settings, resolutions, and adjustments on my similar specced windows machine put me anywhere from 45-49, never hitting the 50 fps cap.

So its really the coding itself. More need to do what Blizzard is doing and release for both platforms.

Anyways, has anyone seen any sign of Half Life release yet?

I know there was a little slip up earlier this year when HL2's achievements were revealed. I'm sure they hid them again (edit: they did!)... anyways they're back. Maybe for the update tonight?

Whats the big deal with Chess? Its 1500 years old? I don't get it.

Seriously, since when did the age of a game become a factor in how much fun it is to play? Half-Life and HL2 are great examples of story telling which is a breath of fresh air in the FPS genre. I am very excited about this great series coming to the Mac.

Great points :)

What do you think - is it worth buying the Orange box and paying a few quid more in the hope that TF2 is coming soon?

Hmm, odd.

When I go to my Library, Half Life 2 remains greyed out and there's no option to install.

If I add Half Life 2 to my cart, at the checkout it tells me I already own the item but I can purchase the item as a gift.

Edit: Logged out Steam and logged back in, sorted.

This goes to both of you, I had no idea in order to enjoy a game you had to play only the most recent title? People buy music today that was recorded years ago and no longer played on the radio.
It doesn't matter if the game is 1-2 or 10 years old as long as someone enjoys it.

+1 I still love playing MDK.

i saw in the steam store a package for $99 that included TONS of games, all the half life and team fortress packs and left for dead 1 and 2. i am wondering if all these games are playable on my 3.06 core 2 duo imac?? 4gb ram i mainly worry about graphics card, mine is a NVIDIA GeForce GT 130 512mb. can anyone let me know? i'm not well versed in this area.

nevermind it went to a page with all valve pack but that pack was windows only. wonder if i can play it on my windows side bootcamp?? doubtful!!

Servers are at capacity like a mofo, took some furious clicking to get myself queued up. Feels good to know Mac peoples are getting a slice of the love!

Looks like it was Steam Cloud this week.

Also yea, achievements are out for HL2 and Episode 1 too. :D
Half Life 1 runs on the GoldSrc engine which hasn't been ported yet. They're trying, though. They did port Half Life 1 into Source but it isn't available to buy yet. Half Life 1 and 2 are pretty independent of each other.

A few points:
• Valve actually hired the main Blizzard Mac dev to do the Valve releases. So, it's ironic you're comparing Valve to Blizzard because it's the SAME dev.
• Source Mac is a full proper OpenGL rewrite, not a DirectX abstraction. Same as Blizzard.
• I have it on good authority that the problems are all issues within the Mac GPU drivers, and that they're working with Apple to fix them. Starcraft 2 is having the same performance issues for the same reasons.

This is not my type of game, so I won't be downloading it. Besides, my Macbook wouldn't be able to play it, but this is good news!

I'm glad to see a lot of games finally coming out for the Mac platform. It's about damn time!

Personally, I am looking forward to CIV V coming this fall! I hope it's better than CIV II, because that's my favorite so far. I still have to fire up my OS 9 machine to play it, but I don't mind!

Awesome, downloading now. Really slow though, got about an hour left. Even with my university network...

Servers are overloaded, not a problem
What is a problem is that TF2 and HL2EP2 have both vanished from my games list now... not impressed. I wanna be playing Half Life...

Yeah, I know what you mean.

At first my download speed leapt up to 631kbps (I have a 10mb fibre optic connection), but now it's dipped to below 100kbps and is going from "Downloading" to "Suspended" status and I need to continually pause the download then resume it to get it moving again!

I think only HL2, HL2:E1, HL2:E2 and portal will work as of now - so your steam library will hold all the others, but greyed out and unplayable until they're available for the mac. of course you could log into your pc and play them, but don't do that.

Looks like they updated the graphic engine for HL2, so all those people laughing about an outdated 6 year old game, just got owned!

Updates to Half-Life 2, Half-Life 2: Episode One and Half-Life 2: Episode Two have been released. The updates will be applied automatically when your Steam client is restarted. The major changes include:

Half-Life 2
Added support for Mac
Added Steam Cloud support for save games
Added new achievements
Improved graphical effects

Half-Life 2: Episode One
Added support for Mac
Added Steam Cloud support for save games
Added new achievements
Improved graphical effects

Half-Life 2: Episode Two
Added support for Mac
Added Steam Cloud support for save games

Note: Save games for Half-Life 2 and Half-Life 2: Episode One will go through a transition. The current level you are on will be saved, but not the exact position in the level.

I didn't read that as updates to the Mac versions you download, I simply read that as updates to Half Life 2 and it's two episodes on Steam itself, ie: changing it from Windows to both Windows and Mac.

It took a restart on Steam after someone posted, "It's here" for the games to show up in my Library.

Seriously? You're not willing to pay $7 dollars for one of the best games ever created...because its TOO OLD? Stop giving Apple users a bad name, shut up and pay the asking price if you want to play it. I'm already sick and tired of mac users who feel that they should be playing top tier games on their platform, under their terms. Guess what? They just (2010) released steam on mac, macs are undoubtedly inferior when it comes to graphics, (don't believe me? look at Gabe's talk on youtube) so just come to grips with the fact that you own a computer that was not built to play games, and pay the goddamn MSRP like everyone else.

I said I wouldn't pay more than $7, as in I will pay $7.

Also, it's now on sale for $7. :)
