AND... Phablets are selling like hotcakes there.. coincident? I think not! I think it's a conspiracy from fashion industry so that men can start carrying murses, to carry their pahblets.

Korea was the test market... we are next :(

IMO, the Phablet is a totally artificial demographic and product classification that has no real consumer nor market meaning. It only exists to give Samsung a good statistic to throw around.

Reminds me of the old story of interviewing accountants. A hiring manager gives a spreadsheet to many candidates asking what the profit or loss is from it. Most just went over the spreadsheet immediately and gave him a numerical answer. The one that got the job said, "What do your want your profit or loss to be?"

Now it is some marketing pukes asking, "What demographic should I create to make you look good?"

I disagree with this notion that phablets have no market value. In Asia and Europe they have taken off. A lot of people get because it eliminates they need of a tablet. They have a decent sized screen to view web pages, photos and videos while still having a phone.

I think the phablet market hasn't taken off in the states because people like their iphones. I believe if apple did come out with a phablet you would see an increase of phablet use. Especially among the 35 and older crowd.

Exactly

If Apple had 6" iPhones and Samsung had 4" phones in the States, everyone here would be ripping into Samsung for their pathetic tiny screens.
And we know this would be the case.

Like how pathetic a small tablet is, and now, it's OMG amazing.

Phablets take off in Asia because of two factors. 1) it is being used to replace TV. In US, we have TV and tablet in our home and watch most of our streaming stuff on TV or a tablet. But in Asia, a lot of young folk only has a phone and they use it for watching movie. 2) Hand writing input is pretty important in Asia since their character is quite cumbersome to be entered by keyboard. And a bigger screen make it a lot easier to use. I think the issue is that if someone has only enough money to buy one mobile device, a phablet is the best choice. And that is what you find happen in most Asia, African, and Latin America country.

I think it depends on what part of asia you are talking about. Yes in some parts of asia that is the case. But in places like se asia and middle east they
prefer the bigger sizs. Also in Europe phablets are becoming popular.
My point in my post is that iphone users In the US will accept whatever screen size apple gives them.

Look at the mini. People kept saying apple would never make a 7 inch tablet and the demand for a 7 inch tablet wasnt enough.
Look at how iphone users kept saying 3.5 inches was enough and no one wanted a bigger phone. Now everyone is like 4.0 is the perfect size. If iphone 6 is 5.0 that will become the new ideal size

IMO, the iPad is an artificial demographic. The tablet wasn't really that good or wanted before the iPad came around, and Apple made people want it. Apple created a new demographic from an already old existing market. Your point is therefore moot IMO.

I can speak of India, Thailand, Malaysia etc, here most will not use the Phab as a TV for bandwidth costs and constraints..Most folks in these countries are looking for a phone that doubles up as a tablet and by doing so saves them the money of having to spend good money to buy a tablet..I would say 2/3 of these folk's usage is web (facebook, twitter, surfing) and as such their phablet ends up taking a lot of their time away from their computer..The students that have access to a computer at school or in the library may even go ahead and be PHC free for a few years and just use their phabs..Their is also quite a lot of video sharing and general video watching on these devices...So Multimedia and Facebook really stand out as the reasons most will go for a larger screen and eliminate the need for the more expensive option of having a dedicated tablet for those tasks..

I assume its the same in china as well..and that would be a driving force for apple as it looks for avenues for growth..A larger Phab class iphone (or whatever else apple decides to call it) can see huge sales in the all important chinese market if apple is able to provide a dinstinct user expereince compared to what others are doing (Samsung , LG etc)...

It's getting on my nerves how everyone makes such a big deal about the 5C being "unprecedented" and a "all new phone" that "bifurcated the lineup"...or that it was "a flop" because it didn't sell as many units as the 5S.

The 5C is functionally almost identical to the iPhone 5. The only changes are the plastic shell and some insignificant internal tweaks.

Apple has been selling last year's model at a discount for years...that's nothing new. The only reason they switched it up a little is the aluminum unibody case was prohibitively expensive for a budget phone (I read that here on mac rumors last year - I don't care enough to dig it up). All they did was take the iPhone 5 and give it a new body. That's it. It is not a new phone - it's the 5 with a facelift. It does not bifurcate the lineup nor is it unprecedented- they've been selling last year's hardware at a discount for years. It was not a "flop" - they've never sold more of the old hardware than the new hardware. They may have thought they would because of the shiny new body, but they quickly saw they weren't and cut back their orders.

The 5C is nothing new. It is the iPhone 5 with a new body. They have sold their old technology at a discount for years. The 5C is nothing new.

Soooo.... you're saying the 5C is nothing new?

Pick and choose the high-points, ignore the low points and give the profile a new name. This survey trick goes all the way back to Darrell Huff's "How to Lie with Statistics."

Amazing that book is sixty years old as of this year. Read it and you'll know how to flush out BS like the "phablet" demographics and other rigged surveys.

Read above.

I think apple needs to enter a new category in mobile phones..The market has been large enough for years to support another device, and the potential market has grown yet again following the china mobile deal..I do not think that apple will get rid of the sub-5inch platform in favour of a bigger phone so those that like the usability of the current phone will generally be kept happy..I feel that apple has seen enough of the big_Phablet sized phones to come up with a device that's their take on larger mobile phones..In time we'll see, but i'd be dissapointed if apple simply went and upped the iphone size to 4.7 inches or so (without changing the physical dimensions all that much) rather then 2 devices, one around 4.7 and one in phabet class that offers more features to users that demand more real estate etc !

Half of iPhone 6 Orders Expected to Go to Pegatron

I've seen the headline of the article twice now, and both times read the headline as "Half of iPhone 6 Orders Expected to Go to Pentagon." Both times I thought "why is the Pentagon getting half of the iPhone 6 orders?" and only realized my mistake after clicking the article link and starting to read the story.
