THe armour lock down now thats crap.
Just like you said about the Jet Pack, the Armor Lock can be really great, but you have to use it correctly. If you are all by yourself, trying to use it in a 1v1 encounter, then no, you aren't using it correctly. Using it as a distraction while teammates flank people gawking at you, using its EMP effect to disable vehicles, or using it to survive heavy weapon fire? That is correct.

halo = quake rip off.

Quake (1996)= Marathon (1994) rip off. The inaccuracy of your statement is that Bungie made both Marathon and Halo (2001). :p

Ok, what I want to know, is the Master Chief around? I never understood the ending of Halo 3. But I figured it out after reading this Halo3 Wikipedia link. If you did not finish the the game on LEGENDARY, they withheld part of the story and misled you!! Bastardos! ;)

My preorder of Halo Reach is enroute.

Yeah, you're right. All the power ups need to be used correctly to be effective and are good in their own right.

Personally i favour the jet pack for most maps.

Well, it has been one week since the game officially launched, so I thought I'd try and sum up some initial thoughts on my experience so far...

Campaign
  • The story is actually pretty awesome. Sure, it sort of fudges some of the previous book and game details. But all in all, it was a pretty great ride. Lots of action from start to finish. And WHAT a finish it is. (Pro Tip: stay through the end credits)
  • Very impressed with the huge improvement in graphics detail, especially in the human faces. Previous games were laughable, at best, but Reach feels and looks very natural and realistic.
  • I really love the way you use your same Spartan throughout all modes, and see it in all of the cinematics in campaign mode. Really personalizes the experience that little bit more, and is quite fun to watch.
  • All of the enemies, even though we've seen them before, feel brand new. The new AI system is pretty good, and on the upper difficulties, they will just destroy you if you make even the slightest mistake. Also, having the Elites back to fight is excellent.

Firefight
  • I am totally LOVING the new Firefight modes. You can play it as you previously did in ODST, or you can go in and customize your own specific games.
  • The added Matchmaking addition is just huge icing on the cake. Now you don't need to have other people on your friends list available every time you want to play. And with the new and improved net-code, the game isn't a giant laggy mess.
  • The new Score Attack mode in Firefight is like crack to me. I could play this forever, and probably not get bored. You go in solo, and have 12 minutes to score as many points as you can. There are various types of games that you can play within this, and all the while, you are seeing the scores from your friends and what they did, so you know what you need to beat to be the tops. Awesome fun.

Matchmaking
  • This was never really my cup of tea, but it has improved a bit since Halo 3. The new Invasion mode, specifically, is quite fun. One team plays as Spartans, the other as Elites, and you fight it out in a variety of different modes. This was in the beta back in May, but it was very limited.
  • Since the competitive side isn't really my thing, I haven't even touched the Arena yet, and might not ever. This is, essentially, the "Ranked" mode in Reach. You play team games, and at the end, you are given a ranking value. Play enough games over a certain time period, and you get put into higher or lower brackets to compete with like-skilled players.
  • The rest, so far, is pretty run-of-the-mill Halo so far. Bungie have said that they are taking it slow with rolling out updates to playlists and tweaks for the time being, just to give people time to settle in. Once things stabilize, they will be adding and modifying playlists on a very regular basis.

Misc.
  • The new Credit system is awesome. You are no longer ranked by your skill (aside from Arena play). Throughout all of your play, be it in Campaign, Firefight, Multiplayer, Custom Games, Forge, etc, you will be earning credits for your actions. You then use these credits to unlock all the different armor pieces for your Spartan. These are all just for looks though, as no pieces unlocked give any advantage in gameplay.
  • Being able to FINALLY make film clips in Firefight and Campaign mode is great. All too often, funny or amazing things would happen in those modes, and there never was a way to capture the moment. Now, we can.
  • The Active Roster in the menu, showing you all the people on your Friends List who are playing Reach, and what they are doing is great. It will let you "Queue Up" to join them, and then when they finish the current game they are in, you will automatically join. Very handy.

All in all, the game is quite amazing. It does feel a little weird with this being Bungie's last Halo game, and not playing as Master Chief. But really, he isn't missed much by me. The entire group of Noble Team, and the planet Reach itself, make for a very memorable experience. I will be playing this game for a long time coming.

Here are a few screenshots I've taken so far. Nothing too amazing, but they turned out pretty good...

I played for about 90 minutes last night. I am impressed with the graphics but focused on the story (solo/coop), seems like more of the same. I mean it's good but as with most sequels and for me especially after the 5th time around, it's feeling a bit repetitive. Maybe as I get farther into it I'll get more excited. :)

Well, let's be real here. It is a shooter. The game is going to mainly entail traversing levels, and shooting the enemies in the way. By nature, it is going to be repetitive. I guess I didn't feel that though, given the variety in the way you go about this; On foot, in a Warthog, in a Falcon, with a Jet Pack, in a Space Ship, with a team, by yourself. I quite liked all the various levels, and the ways the game made available to finish them.
I would assume that once you got through the blatant copy&paste areas used to make the original Halo SP longer you would have realized that was par for the course ;)
Which parts of Reach fit this description?? I can only think of 1 area that was reused, and it was a part of the game you just move through pretty quickly. On top of that, the two times you visit the area are separated in time, both story-wise and mission number (3 & 9), so they have a VERY different feel each time you go through. But hey, if you have other areas, I'm all ears.

I just finished it the other day, on heroic, and I really enjoyed it. Im in the minority of people who don't like Halo multiplayer other than the occasional match but the single player was fun and i like the epic story arc. At the end of the game it kind of made me want to play the original Halo.

Has anyone beat it on legendary? Is there a different ending?

I haven't finished my Legendary run yet, but I've talked with people who have, and as of right now, there is no extra ending for Legendary. There are a bunch of hidden items in the game (Data Pads, Gold Ranger Elites, Switches, etc), and people are thinking that completing some, or all of these things, in conjunction with Legendary difficulty, might yield a different ending. We'll have to wait and see. It just wouldn't be a Halo game without a special ending. And, given this is Bungie's last Halo, it would be really strange if they didn't include one.

I was joking around - in the original game there were literally sections that were copied and pasted to artificially lengthen the game. It has been talked about ages ago, nothing new. That is different than revisiting places, which is common in many games ...

Yea, the Library, I got that. I just misunderstood you, and thought you meant parts of Reach were artificially lengthened, which I was confused about. And yes, thankfully, there are no levels in this game reminiscent of The Library in CE, or Cortana in Halo 3. Those 2 levels, and the Flood within, are some of the worst things in the series, in my opinion.

Can we talk about the disparity between the dificulty levels? I played the game through the first time on heroic and I am not trying to pat myself on the back or anything but it wasn't that hard. I played the first level on legendary last night and I'm pretty sure I died at least a billion times. Whats the deal? I don't remember Halo 3 being like that.

Yea, they seem to really amp up the damage you take when the difficulty rises. I don't like that method. It takes like 3 or 4 shots from a Grunt's Plasma Pistol to completely down your shield, and then pretty much any shots after that will kill you. It isn't very fun. I would prefer if they would just make the enemies harder to kill, like with better shields or better tactics. Just making it easier for them to kill me isn't really challenging, it is just arbitrarily difficult, and pretty lame.

And yes, this game is a good deal harder than Halo 3. I think it is a combination of the improved AI, more enemies, and the fact that they almost always give you a weapon with hardly any ammo. Having to run around looking for weapons, while getting instantly killed is just about as low on my "Fun Factor" scale a game can get.

I like a challange but I got frustrated last night when i had to restart the whole level because i eneded up facing off with a couple of those smaller covinant tanks with one rocket and an assault rifle and the check point screwed me.

Also I gotta say the AI is vastly improved but only on the enemy side. Why are my squadmates such mororns?!

I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels this way...I want more weapons!!! Or more ammo...

-J.-

I burn through a LOT of ammo too. About 5 minutes into a mission I usually am already down to like 50 assault rifle bullets and that ****** covenant pistol. Although now that im on my second go round with the single player if you look around, which I am doing a lot more of, there are a lot of simi hidden chaches of weapons. I didnt notice a lot of them the first time through as they blend into the surrounding pretty well.

I am used to having no ammo from playing Marathon. "Wheres the ammo!"

I honestly do not mind at all. All the enemies drop weapons and ammo when killed, and as said, there are plenty of caches around. One just has to be quick switching from weapon to weapon. It would be nice if enemies ran out of ammo though....

Yea, the enemies drop plenty of weapons.... if you want crappy Plasma Pistols and Needlers. You have to totally scrounge to find anything headshot-capable. The Pistol and DMR are great, as is the Needle Rifle, but they are just far to rare. One thing that is nice about the enemies dropping plenty of Plasma Pistols; you can work the "Noob Combo" on the Elites and Brutes like crazy. Works like a charm. That is, if you have a headshot weapon, which you probably won't :p

Dunno why peeps call grenade launchers and powerful combos "noob". It's a good strategy, then use it.
No one is saying it makes you a noob. It comes from the old Halo days. The old "Noob Toob" was the Halo 2 rocket launcher, because it had lock-on for everything. Which sucked, and basically took all the skill out of using it. In Reach, the Rocket Launcher only locks onto airborne vehicles, and even then, you can evade them if you pilot them well.

And the "Noob Combo" was referred to that not because it made you a noob, but because it was soooo easy to kill them with it. Run around with the Plasma Pistol charged up, blast someone to drop their shields, quickly switch to the BR, and boom, headshot and done. Now there are a couple ways to pull this off. Either an Overcharge shot from the Plasma Pistol, or a Delay Shot from the Grenade Launcher will EMP your target, leaving them open to a quick and easy one-shot headshot.

But again, as I said earlier, getting your hands on a headshot-capable weapon is not that easy in Reach campaign, so you have to be very efficient with your ammo usage to keep it up.

Am I the only one who likes the needler?
The regular old Needler is fine, and there are plenty of them laying around, so replenishing ammo is fine. I just prefer the headshot-capable weapons myself. I LOVE the new Needle Rifle. It is better than the DMR, in my opinion. One of my buddies though, loves the regular Needler, like you do. He doesn't care how well or not it kills enemies, he just has a riot using it. Which is all that matters.

I was excited to see that blood gulch had be remade but after playing it a few times i have to say its one of my least favourite maps. There are too many vehicles and not enough vehicles killing weapons. Usually one person will get in a tank and if he is able to take out the other tank theres no real way to stop them. Particularly if they just sit up the back taking long shots leaving you no real chance to get close. Bungie needed to put a spartan laser on the map somewhere.

4 or 5 Sniper shots will destroy a tank. 2 or 3 if you are precise and can hit either the driver compartment, or the exhaust vent. Just FYI.

But also, you will only have to deal with that for a about another week. The October update to playlists and maps is coming next week, and the Tank is being swapped for a Wraith, along with a host of other fixes and tweaks that people have noticed in this first couple weeks of playing.

I don't play Halo multiplayer for a couple of reason. The main one being that i suck at it. But the other reason is the wait time to get into a game and then out of it to get into another. I dont have that problem with Modern Warefare 2 so I am just wondering if its me and my crappy connection or what?
