Handoff works for me sometimes but seems that when I want to use it it is not working and I spend 5-10 minutes messing around turning on/off settings etc. and then it works.

Therefore it sorta works but not reliable enough for me to want to think about using in my day to day life - kinda like Siri

I find it odd that I've been able to make phone calls through my rMBP without having Bluetooth enabled on my iPhone. Very odd...

I discovered that you need to go into Settings and make sure ALL references to your Apple ID email address are identical. I had some with my original ID (a gmail address) and others with my @me.com, which I prefer to use. Once I made them ALL my @me.com Handoff kicked in no problem.

Just to be sure, I also limited aternate email addresses to that same @me.com plus my cell number on my iPhone 6+.

I think that's the culprit.
I have an Apple ID email address that's Google, not Apple.
So handoff doesn't really work in my case.

My Apple ID is a gmail one. No issues with Handoff. A me.com email is not required.

I've found that if you do a completely fresh install on everything with a brand new Apple ID it works as intended. If everything has a pile of OS updates on top of updates on top of updates, Handoff is a mess.

My apple ID is my business email address, apart form having iCloud email associated to it. Handoff is working for me seamlessly, no problem.

I am not sure why having a google email Apple ID will stop Handoff working. Thought it was more of a Bluetooth connectivity which caused it to work or not for some people.

As stated, having a Google email Apple ID has nothing to do with this issue.

The problem is not with the provider of the e-mail service, rather you have to have the same e-mail setup on all devices, if you're using different ones on each device, handoff seems to not work is what people are saying.

if I start an email, text message - whatever, nothing flashes up on the other device

I've never had anything "flash up" on any of my devices due to Handoff. But, if I go to my iPhone right now, in the lower left corner of my lock screen there's a small Safari icon. If I sweep up on that and authenticate with my passcode or fingerprint, this page in which I'm typing comes up.

So it's working here, but if I expected anything flashing here or there, I'd draw the same conclusion you did. So I'm wondering if this might be a matter of incorrect assumptions?

The point is: I don't have an iCloud email associated to my Apple ID (and I don't know how you did it). I have and use an iCloud mail, but it's not associated to my Apple ID.
For that reason handoff is not working ....

In my case it doesn't work and I don't know why....

Solved!

Issue solved!
I just edited my Apple ID profile (from the website, not from the iDevices), adding a valid iCloud mail address, and now handoff is working flawlessly.

Doesn't work reliable for me either but I have yet to find a user case to actually need it lol

I see the pop up for iMessage on my RMBP but when I click on it the messaging app simply opens but there's nothing pre-written. If I do the same with mail it just gets stuck in a "loading..." pop up

I am glad you managed to sort it.... I hate it when there is a 'fraud' /s

Your post me made consider something: my iCloud account does not have an iCloud mail address associated with it. I never opted to create one. But for those that do have an iCloud mail address, is it required that that email be used for handoff to work?
