Your post me made consider something: my iCloud account does not have an iCloud mail address associated with it. I never opted to create one. But for those that do have an iCloud mail address, is it required that that email be used for handoff to work?

The only way too have it working for me was to add an iCloud email. Just that.

Ok. Then perhaps the fix was really just you making an update of any kind. Adding an iCloud email address can't be required as I don't have one :)

I haven't changed my original Apple ID email (@gmail.com), I've just added an iCloud one.

It was mainly for curiosity: I don't really need it.
But it's cute ;)

I too thought its a cool, but no-so-useful feature..

Until last week when composing a long email on my rMBP I had to urgently get away.. Lo behold when I was free couple of hours later, I could compose and finish my email off on my iPhone. Now I think this feature is mega cool....

Every time I painlessly tether my iPad to my iPhone I appreciate the Handoff/Continuity feature.

Yep. In that case would be useful.

Still doesn't work and never has.

I have tried every permutation to get this going but nothing changes. Handoff doesn't work for me at all.

No, I don't have one. I just want to use my gmail account.

Then you can't solve it.
The only way to have it work for me was to add an iCloud email address.
I didn't change my gmail account. I just added an iCloud email on every devices and all work flawlessly.

Be careful not to give misleading information. An iCloud email address is not required for Handoff to work.

In my case it was the only way to have it work, so as far as I'm concerned, I'm giving the right information.

Saying that he can't solve it because he doesn't have an iCloud email, is not correct information.

You have now said twice that it is not the correct information, so can you tell us what is the correct information?

Perhaps we are doing it wrong, or maybe there is a better way of doing it. We would like to know.

Thanks

I'm not trolling. And I don't have any better suggestions than those offered in this thread. But people shouldn't say that the answer is that you have to have an iCloud email since that is 100% not correct. For me, and at least a couple other friends I've confirmed with, Handoff/Continuity works even when the iCloud account doesn't even have an iCloud email created for it.

Again I'd suggest the OP to create an iCloud email (it's free and easy), add it to his Apple ID , and came back here to report about handoff.

I haven't used it all that much but I just tried a few things. Email, Safari, and maps. All handed off fine.

Handoff was really spotty for me and flat out didn't work for a while.

iCloud Keychain has to be on on all devices for Handoff to work, for one.

It's still kind've spotty between devices, but it's working a lot better now. Still not stable enough for day to day use. And I do have an iCloud email associated with my Gmail based Apple ID (which is used on all devices).

Phone calls work flawlessly, other features not so much.
