Watch the vid on Apple's site. You'll change your opinion.

Whatever the problems... this is the ONLY comment about this. unpolished? really?

I did watch the video and I love the hardware (again, except the missing camera).

As far as software the apps that they updated look great and I was impressed. However, the desktop and locked screens look like a joke. Why would you take a UI that was made for a 3.5" screen and put it on a 9.7" screen? You can't tell me the fact that the space between the icons on the desktop is bigger than the icons themselves doesn't look ridiculous?

After all the hype..what a gigantic gorilla of a disappointment. The iPhone lived up to the hype on its initial introduction. You cannot create new hype that equals or surpasses the original iPhone hype and then just release an oversized iPod Touch with a few extra features. No multitasking?? Are you freaking serious?! That giant screen and no Flash? Really?! It doesn't even have a camera of any kind whatsoever.

If you already have an iphone then there is no reason whatsoever to get this over just about any given netbook. The limitations of this thing are atrocious. This goes far beyond the original iPhone's limitations of no cut and paste, etc... Apple really dropped the ball here. They main thing is no multitasking...that's just a fail-and-a-half. All because Apple wanted to go with their own processor I guess.

Horrible...I can go ahead and buy a netbook now..I was holding off to see if the iPad would meet my needs...doesn't even come close.

You may have noticed that absolutely no one anywhere agrees with you.

When it comes to the comments about how the icons look on the desktop, the silly-small lock screen clock and slider, and only four icons in the "dock", I agree: it looks...unpolished really is the best word.

Disappointing...surprised by no multitasking and camera...as I already own iPhone, i don't see much reason owning iPad which is essentially glorified version of iPhone/iPod touch.

God, I am so sick and tired of the whiners and complainers. What in the h___ do you want? It's a great device at a great price and will sell like crazy. I thought this was a site for folks who like Apple and their products. Sheesh, I'm out of here.

Honestly I like most of the things from apple, but right now this is the most overpriced piece of crap.

700 dollars to for a 64gb tablet come on. this is an supersized iphone. no camera (not really important for me), no flash, ethernet (ppl still use ethernet:)) no multitasking. Most importantly, it runs its own OS. I was hoping for a mini macbook that could run some photo video apps (final cut/aperture/photoshop) but it is just some piece of consumer crap. for 300 bucks more u can get a brand new macbook which is like 20x more powerful.

Buy a 13" macbook. The fact that you wanted to run fully functional video editing applications on a tablet is funny.

Wow, it’s the iPhone all over again. I remember everyone be this negative after it was announced. Even my mom see the value in the iPad. If you don't see the value in this, then it wasn't made for you.

For those of you would want a full computer tablet, look at the windows ones, they are very heavy and think. You would have a hard time getting full computer in to this form-factor and have any kind of battery life.

Do you remember how expensive the first iPhone was and sure it was a phone, but they sold out like hotcakes.

I watched the video. Though its well filmed and highlights important features, to me it still doesn't prove anything "magical". This is a big iPod Touch no if's ands or but's about it really.

Agreed. Johnny Ive is getting more and more incredible as time goes on. It's sad, because he's a brilliant guy. Also, exactly what did he do for this product anyway. Fanboys around the world already designed it (maybe even better).

The iPad is the least amount of work he (his team) has had to do for any new product.

Disappointing. This is a mega-iPod touch without the camera. Apple's eBook reader. There's certainly nothing revolutionary about making an iPod touch with a bigger screen.
Who said revolutionary? Stop reading rumor sites kido. Apple is a consumer tech company. Go to Sony's site and you'll see every darn device they could make up.Multitasking? why. So the battery can die out faster. I'm def getting one.
And as for the mega ipod touch comment ,then what is a netbook by sony compared to one of their larger more powerful laptops. You are such a hater.ipads will sell like crazy. And dear god just wait for the apps!!!! My money is in the bank and I'm just waiting for the release date.

Well, it's not a perfect device. I think SJ went overboard with terms like 'magical,' but that's just Apple's way. The name is...well...iffy, but I for one will get used to it.

To me, this does fill a gap in the Apple lineup, and I do intend to buy one. I've been struggling with a mediocre 9" netbook (cramped keyboard, weak performance, a choice of Windows or an iffy Hackintosh). The MBA is just too expensive and overlaps too much with my 13" uMB. My iPhone is great, but not good for handling light documents, note taking, etc. Now comes the iPad.

If you use a netbook for notes, light documents, web, and email, the iPad replaces it. If you wanted a Kindle or similar, the iPad replaces it (assuming the buggers release iBooks to Canada...grrr....). If you wanted a true netbook version of a Macbook, you're going to be unhappy. That doesn't mean the future won't hold amazing things; I for one buy the rumors that iPhone OS 4.0 may offer multitasking, as the iPad certainly seems up to the job.

I applaud Apple for hitting the pricepoint and giving a neat set of options/pricing for connectivity. I'm not certain about a separate 3G bill, but pay-as-you-go makes it easier to buy a 3G enabled device and not use it if I'm not far from Wifi.

If you don't like it, don't buy it. The best way to speak out is via your wallet. I for one will vote 'yes, please'!

what are you talking about?:confused:

I love Apple, I really do, but I still don't understand why anyone needs this, or why LTD is literally freaking out and tell us that Apple's product is the "future" and that its "game over" it just doesn't make any sense to me. I guess I am still asking the same question why do we(the consumer/nerd/tech savy person need this device?

I'm freaking out because the potential of this product is UNREAL. Apple took the galactically successful iPod Touch platform and blew it up into a full computing platform. And it works. In time, you'll be dong all your photo editing on an iPad. Full Aperture. Or Photoshop. Or fill in the blank. Believe it. We already have iWork on it.

This is just the beginning.

The consumer/tech savvy person doesn't *need* anything beyond comfortable shoes and a warm place to sh*t. As in, even the most basic, generic, PC/MS crap will do the job.

But the consumer/tech-savvy person (which are NOT necessarily the same people, incidentally) will WANT one. Because they want to do all these basic things in STYLE and actually enjoy the tools they use. It's the whole driving force behind Apple products. In time, there will be as many iPads as there are iPod Touches.

One other feature I was hoping for was something along the Kindle's subscription based newspaper and blog automatic delivery. Granted the NYT showed off it's app and was really impressive, but I was hoping for a more universal newspaper/blog app. Something that smaller newspaper and blogs could upload to an you could just pay a small monthly fee to get.

I would love a "space" (like osx spaces) on the iPad that would be a blank desktop with your subscribed papers and blogs just scattered about. You could read them or skim through them all from the same desktop space and they were delivered automatically.

Bloggers don't usually leave their office

What are you talking about with tablet makers? Apple didn't exactly make a tablet, they built a hybrid between an iPhone and an underpowered tablet. Most tablets have much more functionality than the iPad, so essentially what you are saying is that added functionality leads to a bad product? I don't think so.. Apple has done a few things right with this by creating something that is sexy, thin, and light but it lacks in the functionality that many other tablet makers allow. There is no ability to run background apps, you cant use a stylus to write notes(students), and you are limited to apps just from the app store.

Oh, and as a side note; not everyone is giving it "rave" reviews. So far from what I have read, the reviews are pretty neutral (engadget, techcrunch, and gizmodo). I also feel like a lot of people/bloggers/nerds/tech-savy people are asking the same question. "Why do we need this?"

at the end of the day though, I will probably end up buying one to put on my nightstand, and chances are it will never leave it.

I guess I still haven't made up my mind about this.

Bloggers don't need it because they are usually sitting at one spot most of the day. Can you imagine all of the really hard to use products we'd have if bloggers were the only target market? This thing is designed for most people, most of whom move around during the day, take the bus to work, like reading but not on a small screen and don't want to carry lots of magazines/books with them. The iPad is a manifestation of what Jobs has always been after: useful technology for everyone.

I think Apple's primary goal here was to minimize price and get into the ebook market. USB ports and cameras are expensive as are other features. At $499, the thing can compete with the Kindle.

Also, a glorified iphone is what a lot of people want. I think computer nerds wanted a tablet PC, this device is clearly not that, but maybe we'll see it in a coming generation.

Got a feeling that multitasking is coming.

And no photoshop, but photoshop elements.

(And I think a stylus for the iPad won't be hard to make).

Or maybe Adobe will make a "tween" version--i.e., between its iPhone App and Elements.

...

Have you ever used Flash on laptop while running on battery? Flash eats batteries. Not only does it eat batteries, it makes my laptop hot. So, putting Flash on this would cut your battery life by at lease half and make it so hot you can't hold it...

Someone said there's no pen input, no handwriting recognition, etc.

Is that true?

If so, rename this thing the iFlop. No student will want one. What good is having textbooks and written material on it if you can't take notes, underline, or edit drafts on the screen. These are things you can do on any tablet with a digitizer running Windows 7, and in fact Windows 7 does it reasonably well with handwriting recognition and the various digitizer inputs and software.

Anyone into graphics design simply won't want this. You can't do anything with it.

No multitask, no flash. And no USB? What if I have a large file on a portable flash drive? I can't plug it into my iPad to review it?

10h battery, instant-on OS, large display, speed, very responsive multitouch display, plenty of iPhone software and plenty of opportunities for new softs...

Looks like those who complain still don't get that an X86/PC tablet isn't the best idea outside niche markets (i.e. if you really need to run a custom-made XP entreprise soft and Citrix can't help). You can try a PC tablet today like the Archos 9 and will understand why a/ running an unmodified Photoshop on a 9" tablet is a bad idea, b/ the X86 CPU are excellent hands-warming device, even the fanless Z510 Atom, c/ Windows on a low-powered X86 will run much slower than an OS designed specifically for a portable device on a custom-build CPU, d/ Apple's multitouch quality is still out of reach for many manufacturers.

Can't wait for the iPad version of TouchOSC :)
