When they started they had a huge jump on the competition. The market has gotten vastly more competitive, I certainly hope Apple would try and change their strategy to stay competitive.

Those people already wouldn't be able to do anything with the phone with gloves on once it's unlocked anyway. They already make special gloves to work with touchscreen.

Apple doesn't compete on price.Look at computers and iPods. No sign of that changing.
And so far they are doing pretty well.

Stopp being stupid! The NSA doesn't care about your fingerprints. Except when you are visiting the USofA. Than you have to give your fingerprints anyway. And they also want to know what meal you had during flight. Your Welcome!

You have NO IDEA how pissed Germans are about what happened! No idea at all! The media over here is full of it, every day. The bulletin boards over here are 95% full of hate towards the US. Something I do not like, but its true. This is going on for months now. This will cost America A LOT. Look at Brazil. Look at other countries! Even so the boots of the Americans are still feared and countries are very afraid, ppl and businesses the NSA is spying upon are so angry. The fact that the US media is not really reporting about it - for good reasons - does not matter it does not matter. Google, MS, Apple will loose money because of it. Read foreign sources and start to become angry what your government is doing to others and to Americans. And become angry about the Germans government that is using this for their own advantages.

Look at it in a different way: Apple did not get rid of iPhone 5, they simply replaced it with iPhone 5C. All internals are nearly the same, just with a different casing/assembly, bigger battery and stuff like that to modernize and keep the costs down.

There are three tiers:

Low-end: iPhone 4S
Middle: iPhone 5C
High-end: iPhone 5S

Apple've updated the middle/high-end tiers only today.

If you live in the US, you're right. Everything is adjusted accordingly, and the middle tier is a better deal than last year. You get a 5C for the same price as last year's 4S. All sweet. If you live in Australia or Europe, the price for the middle tier (and high end) has gone up, so not so great. In Australia, the 5S costs $70 more than last years ip5 price (without contract). My point was that the contract prices will also reflect this outside the US. In the US the 5C is a free upgrade for that tier, where I live, I'm paying extra for it.

X64

The A6 is a decent cpu and can last a few more years. The average user will be be glad to save 100$ on an iphone and won't give a ****** about what's inside

Well according to this article:
http://www.zdnet.com/the-iphone-5s-goes-64-bit-will-it-matter-7000020497

I guess there is a real world advantage for having a 64-bit processor right now. And games are heavy lifting on a phone.

that was fun

i don't know what the writer of that article has been smoking, but 64bit is definitely NOT needed for either fingerprint recognition nor for the camera features

i can dig up my almost 10 year old thinkpad-with-fingerprint-reader that runs on 32bit windows if you want! as for the 'camera features' mentioned; strangely, Nokia doesn't appear to be having any trouble running 'camera features' that far outclass the iphone's on their 32bit phones

great marketing fluff though

If you've done nothing wrong then there is nothing to worry about.

I read so many articles across the web about people forever seeking anonymity in their browsers, phones, search engines.

Every time I read them I just think...who gives a *****? I mean really. I'd be more than happy to publicly share my fingerprints, DNA info on the web.

It's arrogant to assume that someone out their wants to steal YOUR fingerprints. Their are billions of us on this planet.

Worst thing that happens to me is I get the odd piece of junk mail because I collect points on my fuel. Big whoop, I have a trash can.

or, more truthfully, you could have answered:

on a 2GB ram (let's say they went bonkers and doubled the current amount) device? nothing.

Not true, in addition to the ability to use more ram, there are speed benefits. Not twice as fast as some people have said, but truthfully more than "nothing".

i'm saying that, unless you do a lot of heavy lifting on your smartphone, a 64bit system, while all dandy sounding, doesn't bring any significant real world advantages over plain old 32bit right now

The real world advantage is speed. And there are plenty of apps that tax the processing power.

Last I checked Apple does business in the real world where everyone competes on price. Apple has no choice to do otherwise or lose business. And more accurately, so far they have been doing extremely well, but more recently they have lost considerable market share and their stock price has dropped a couple hundred points. Apple's options are price their products competitively or lose sales to their competitors, period.

But in this case I was talking specifically about the 16/32/64 gig versions and the difference in pricing between them. I don't think they'll be able to keep up $100 gap for 16 more gigs indefinitely, nor would I describe that situation as "competing on price".

$100 less for a 5c than for a 5s, and you'll have to pay for the same 2 year contract.
And if you after 2 years want to sell your phone, you will get a lot more for the 5s than the 5c.

I guess those who aren't able to pay another $100 for a 5s, those who can't calculate the total cost of the phone including contract, and those who don't understand the second hand value of the phones will get a 5c...

Or, perhaps, they just like it better.

this was the most boring apple show ever! NOTHING new at all! always the same boring formular...it worked 4 years ago...but not any longer!

the new iphone with a finger print scanner for the NSA. wow! That is why I should spend 700-900 euros? For USSR-style spying on me tech?

ARE YOU ****ING NUTS???

Besides: Americans might be used to be spied upon. Germans are no better! However I refuse to pay any money on something that has only disadvantages for me - and no real benefits.Whats new iphone-wise Apple? Except of course that by using my finger prints I am loosing any chance to say "it was not me" who went for this or that porn site. Besides an A7, A8, or A9 with 2000 GHZ does NOT make me stiff.

Same time: LGs new phone offers a lot more ... and Apple does not innovate anymore. As a matter of fact Apple just repackages his old **** and gives it a higher number. Method: lets do something new: phones with color cases and - wow - one in gold. OMG! It is so pathetic! I loved Apple products, but this is too much!

My plan - and same 4 others: lets go low tech! Lets move data offline! We fought the Stasi in Germany. Next is the german secret service and the NSA. Keep your dirty fingers away from our data!

I'll bet using an LG phone to surf porn would make you super stiff!!

Wow they'll need to buy a computer just to keep track of all that! If they added one more size it would be impossible with today's technology!
Exactly, one more size times five colors times three different cell-phone standards. Another fifteen additional models with millions of units distributed worldwide to over one hundred carriers with ten thousands of outlets each. One computer isn't enough to handle all this logistics.

A third size option for the 5c just isn't feasible. I mean it.

All I can do is laugh.

not for the ram amounts used in todays phones nor the applications for which they're used

or, let's see you blow through that facebook app on your new 64bit phone

I think its genius to take last years model and put a color case on it and sell it as the cheapo version. Apple proved they can innovate when it comes to marketing schemes.

Low budget phone at a premium price. Only Apple is stupid enough to try to pull that off. Good luck.

That doesn't quite make sense. If Apple tried it and failed that would be stupid. But if they try it and succeed then it's pretty smart. Yes? My money is on the 'succeed' option.

Some people are saying they should have lower prices on the 5c. But in the Android/Lumia (Nokia) realms, people are saying that selling phones at breakeven or a loss is an exercise in futility, and question whether certain companies should be in the business.

On the other hand, I really don't like how Apple is now apparently resorting to vaporware, leaking to reporters that "we will have a >4" screen in 2014."

The thing is, even if Nokia sells a $99 smartphone at a $10 loss, Apple could easily add a flash and front facing camera to the same internals, upgrade the build quality, and still sell a quality phone for $150. That leaves them with $100 for profit and any other upgrades they want to ad to it. And it's still 1/2 of the price of the 5c.

And how many of these Samsung phones and tablets work together with its new Galaxy Gear smartwatch? Two!
You can make a lot of everything, if you have absolutely no aspirations to make it right.

From all these Galaxy products my carrier offers maybe two or three, but not in five different colors and three different sizes each. When Apple makes some a new color and size combination, its just there everywhere.

I live in a fully emerged market and I cant afford this phone designed for emerging markets.. go figure.
