All of the collective wisdom from my friends went wrong. They guessed the iPhone 5c (unlocked) would be selling at a price similar to the iPad mini ($329), but in my opinion it's simply not Apple and I guessed a price around $499 unlocked. But it's even more! How is it gonna sell in emerging markets? And China? Samsung and Xiaomi phones are selling like hotcakes there.

Part of me would give an iPhone 5C a shot if it ended up on Virgin Mobile.

There's no way I'm paying $99+ for that phone on contract or $549 unlocked.

That doesn't quite make sense. If Apple tried it and failed that would be stupid. But if they try it and succeed then it's pretty smart. Yes? My money is on the 'succeed' option.

Depends what they're aiming for really. If it's capturing the low-end market where people with minimum wage strive for the iPhone experience then it's a no go, they won't succeed. If it's targeting the usual iPhone crowd who'd like to save extra bucks for something else then sure it'll sell but not well enough. Specs wise the 5C is decent but the pricing isn't, not for the consumers it's trying to target. It could've came with less ppi, no LTE, 8GB storage standard, the 4s Ram/CPU and it would have sold like hot cake at a low price range, this is the kind of "Sweet spot" pricing and specs captures perfectly, regardless what we think if it's "plastic" "garbage" etc etc..

Pretty underwhelmed by the iPhone 5S. I don't know if it is because most of the major features had been leaked ahead of the announcement.

I don't see much use to the fingerprint scanner for me. I might be wrong. I think I tend to use thumb or index finger randomly when hitting the home button to unlock the phone. I am not sure if my company will support fingerprint scanner for authentication or insist on passcode lock.

Camera has seen some meaningful and nice upgrades, but not mind blowing. I like Apple going towards bigger sensors, that is the right direction.

Nice chip upgrades A7 and the M7.

Storage size remains same (this is bad)

I could see people upgrading to it from iPhone 4 or 4S, but I am not seeing anything really compelling to me to upgrade from iPhone 5.

As far as I can say no voice over LTE, and not clear if it can even do regular phone call and LTE at the same time. No improvements I can see in the LTE front from last year.

No improvements mentioned in audio quality, microphone, speaker, etc.

All in all of the announced features it is a bit underwhelming

how come none of these first impressions include the new space grey color? all of them seem to feature the gold one only...........

And how many of these Samsung phones and tablets work together with its new Galaxy Gear smartwatch? Two!
You can make a lot of everything, if you have absolutely no aspirations to make it right.

From all these Galaxy products my carrier offers maybe two or three, but not in five different colors and three different sizes each. When Apple makes some a new color and size combination, its just there everywhere.

you are seriously hopeless LOL

Super disappointed.

The only upgrades were not necessarily useful upgrades. I would have been happier if they didn't get the fingerprint reader, and instead gave larger and cheaper storage capacities.

I will wait for either the next iteration, or jump ship... I dunno yet.

I have a 4S, and neither device released today give me a compelling enough reason to upgrade.

I hate to be "that guy" but this truly may be the first new iPhone release that I'm not planning to run out and upgrade to. I got a bit of a late start into the iPhone world (I was a die-hard Palm OS guy who loved his Treo), so the 3GS was my first iPhone. After that, I upgraded every single year. Interestingly enough, the color 5C appeals to me a bit more than the 5S, not because I care about the colors, but I think I'd prefer the plastic case over the metal one (my iPhone 5 is too slippery/delicate feeling and the black aluminum has worn off in several spots). The lower-cost of the 5C doesn't hurt either.

As for the 5S's advantages, the newer/faster CPU would be nice, but I'm not sure if I care about the excercise-focused add-on chip. I'd always like a better camera, but is the camera *that* much better to make me consider upgrading and paying a premium? If it is, it doesn't look like they made a compelling case for it in their presentation.

Overall, the big thing that would get me to upgrade is still missing, and I was expecting it to be missing: a larger screen. I fully expect to upgrade my iPhone 5 to iOS7 and enjoy that (hopefully), but come next year, there better be a bigger-screen model or I'll have be giving serious consideration to switching platforms, and I really don't want to do that.

Give this man a prize!

You aren't the intended audience for this upgrade. Although I'm sure Apple would be happy if did upgrade from your 5 to 5S.

Not everything is for the special snowflakes!

People can brush off the 5S all they want - I'm finally upgrading from my 3GS and getting off ATT - and getting a 5S!! The 3GS has served me well. Just feels so slow these days. Sure wish they still made all black though. "Space Grey" will have to do. There's no way I'm getting "gold" or "white" for that matter.

I think the celebrations are well underway at google and samsung. Even Steve Ballmer has got to be laughing right now.

people like you say that every year. and every year it becomes the best selling smartphone. this year will be no different.

----------

Low budget phone at a premium price. Only Apple is stupid enough to try to pull that off. Good luck.

oh? who else has a 64-bit system on a chip and OS? specifically? and capacitive touch fingerprint scanners? 120fps slomo? seem like premium features to me...

Ehh, yawn…looks like the last one. A couple of features are cool, but this is Apple we're talking about. Can't wait for 6.

yes because changing the exterior case will make all the difference in the world.

do you expect the same from your home reciever's annual update? new body design for that? er, why not...?

----------

This year will be different. :(

doom! doooom! apples doomed, this time for real!

----------

Definitely an evolutionary step for the iPhone.

yes, and that's the name of the game for apple. revolution happens infrequently, followed by repeated evolution. you don't realize this?

----------

I already see all these angry posts from people who'll claim they cannot unlock their phones in cold weather, because the sensor doesn't read fingerprints through gloves :D

how would those people, you know, USE the phone with gloves on?

Still have my 4S and will continue to hold onto it. I'll upgrade when I get a larger screen. Looks like I'll be skipping two generations of iPhones, which is the first time ever. I don't see anything really exciting here.

Look at other countries! Even so the boots of the Americans are still feared and countries are very afraid, ppl and businesses the NSA is spying upon are so angry. The fact that the US media is not really reporting about it - for good reasons - does not matter.
Okay. Lets get political about this. Most people Stalin killed were Russians. Most people Hitler killed were Germans. Most people Obama will kill with all this information the NSA collected will be Americans. Every intelligence agency is first and foremost a thread to its own people. Even if this administration is not yet misusing the data, one of the next ones will.
If you've done nothing wrong then there is nothing to worry about.
Is what the Jews said before they went to the chambers. Weapons kill everyone they are pointed at. Personal guilt doesn't matter. Never did.

Right-to-bear-arms.jpg

Americans have the right to bear arms, in preparation for a possible return of your king or queen of England. And whom are they killing with all those guns? Each other. Why? Because the range of firearms is limited and neighbors life nearby. The world only needs to be concerned about american intercontinental weapons. Everything else harms themselves more than anyone else.

Apple next to HBO is one of the few companies constantly creating international goodwill for America. But thats not important. America doesn't need to be loved. It needs to be aware of its own tendency to Mccarthyism. Not before Americans will fear their own kind more than some moslems or englishman on the other side of the world, something will change to the better.

that was fun

i don't know what the writer of that article has been smoking, but 64bit is definitely NOT needed for either fingerprint recognition nor for the camera features

i can dig up my almost 10 year old thinkpad-with-fingerprint-reader that runs on 32bit windows if you want! as for the 'camera features' mentioned; strangely, Nokia doesn't appear to be having any trouble running 'camera features' that far outclass the iphone's on their 32bit phones

great marketing fluff though

So you were involved with the development of the Apple TOUCH ID project and the Apple camera feature project, neat.

Same story for me! I started with the 3GS (hence my join date) and has bought every iteration since then. I'm going to skip this year.
