Glass creates less friction for a sliding finger than plastic. This is an advantage for a touch screen, but highly dubious on the back.
Disagree. I think they don’t use plastic on the front because it would scratch like crazy and look absolutely horrible within a few weeks. Nothing to do with friction 🤣

Under the screen finger print sensors were invented after face id. So, it's definitely a move forward that Apple is slow to make. Perhaps they have a big inventory of face id sensors.

I think it’s safe to say that leading up to the pandemic, Apple was betting on Face ID all the way, and had no intention of bringing Touch ID back.

I can understand why. Apple is all about removing barriers from technology and what is more invisible than a device which unlocks the moment the user looks at it, without them having to do anything further with it?

I guess we will just have to see if Touch ID comes back in some shape or form in next year’s iPhone, or if Apple is betting that the pandemic will largely be over by this time next year and continues to stick with Face ID.

Maybe Apple doesn't see the notch as a problem. Ever thought of that? Just because a few here don't like it doesn't mean the notch has been overall received as problem to the majority.
Maybe I’m allowed to have my own opinion. Ever thought of that? Just because an incredibly tiny number of individuals on here like the notch doesn’t mean Apple isn’t working on finding ways to evolve their design.

edit: awww looks like I hurt your feelings :( so sad

I’ll take a notch over Samsung. The quality and reliability of iPhone is just not even close on a galaxy. The galaxies are designed to break after 2 years.

Security is using a long passphrase to unlock. Convenience is using face to unlock.
FaceID gets you the incredibly solid security with incredibly fast screen unlock and all other things FaceID unlocks like ApplePay, passwords, etc. It’s a design trade off I’m willing to accept to have two really good features bundled in to one. No disrespect to those who prefer Samsung designs and tech, I prefer the notch (for what it gives me) and the overall design of iPhone.

I ignore the notch as well but it still looks awful compared to the front of the S21

Plus touch ID is more valuable now
Punch hole is gross. Yes two ways to authenticate would be nice, like a side button with Touch ID. But it would also be nice if you lived in a country where you can use Face ID as it’s intended because of proper governance.

Phones have gotten kind of boring especially at crazy stupid prices. My next purchase is a new Thinkpad laptop with Zen 3 mobile CPU and non-crappy webcam.

Yes s21 plus is glass back but regular s21 just plastic
Why is it that plastic is creeping back at Samsung after they finally went with quality materials starting with the Galaxy S6, S7, etc.? Now only their most hideously expensive $1500 models have premium materials while even their regular high-end phones selling for $1000 are made of plastic (e.g. Note 20)? Is it greed? Are they really pinching the pennies nickel and diming the customer by using junk parts? I guess old habits die hard... It’s almost like Samsung has regressed to 2014 when everything they made was plastic junk

The snapdragon 888 runs at 2.84GHZ close to 3GHZ speed
It also has a blazing Fast 5G modem 7.5Gbps.

Benchmarks for the Snapdragon 888 on the S21. Still not that great compared to the A13. Might be that there is throttling for heat and battery conservation. Interesting see how the faster 5G modem is on battery drain.

I had an iPhone replaced because of a dead pixel. And that pinhole camera looks like one huge dead pixel.

That would a horrible UI descision. It would not adress the camera issue that results in the notch; and require a user to flip the phone to see what is displayed. Cases would need another cutout and magnetic mounts would be problematic, plus there is the location of the wireless charging pad to consider. Seperate small displays were useful in the flip phone days, but not with today's designs.
OK do the reverse put the notch on the back
