Stopped lurking just to post this. I downsized from 15" and the smaller screen will definitely take some getting used to, but I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have wanted anything heavier. In fact, the 15" is starting to seem bulky to me.

Thank you for this! I now feel better going for the smaller size. ?

Thanks Dan. I also ordered the 14” base model to replace my 2016 15” MBP. That’s been a lemon since the start (brought in 5 times for various repairs) so looking forward to a new MacBook Pro. So glad to hear the outstanding and “mind blowing” reviews. Keep them coming!

Using the 14" now and it'll take some getting used to, coming from a 2013 15". Gotta use this to its full capacity before my return window closes, but I want this to work because I don't want to carry around a nearly 5 pound laptop.

I don't know what kind of work you do, but I had been a 15" laptop user for years (web dev). We hired a new guy and he extolled the virtues of the 13" MBP (unibody at the time). I questioned his logic, but when I moved to a new job they gave me a choice and I went with the 13" and have never looked back. During the pandemic, I went from a 3-screen setup to working every day from the couch - with my 13" (2016 Touchbar) and haven't felt too cramped (I use the "More Space" setting). Sometimes I've had to hook up an external monitor - but having a 16" screen would not have helped in that regard.

I just saw the new machines at the Apple store in person. I must say I'm thoroughly disappointed. They're huge. Nearly as big as the unibody models. With Apple constantly screaming how their packaging is more thermally efficient and runs much less hot how come they couldn't make it thinner? This leaves too many questions. But imho, it's a step in the wrong direction.

I can’t wait to get this. I feel I have one of the most quickly-obsolete MacBooks in the 2015 MBP. It started showing it’s age pretty quick.

I think I’m going for the higher-end 14 inch model, and can’t wait to try it out.

2015 15" guy here too. Wonder how the 14" compares. I found this comparison with the 16" only.

Get an Air then.
This Notch 'failure' enables us a 1080p webcam + additional screen space left and right (+74px). Rather than having a useless bezel or nose-cam. Use a black menu bar and it will never bother you again.
I'm using it right now without a black menu bar, and it's not bothering me in the least. New 14" M1 Pro is SICK!

Are you sure you’ve checked the right models? Haha
I got a 14” one and compared to my previous MacBook Air (the 2017 and before design), and the new one feels tiny! It’s hard to believe this one has a bigger screen since the footprint is so much smaller.

Yes it's extra space but extra space that is not very useful since it will be there for the menu which disappear anyway and it does make the laptop needing to be bigger to accommodate for that useless extra screen space.
Not convinced you're a real Mac user, if having the menu bar at the top of the screen a huge percentage of the time isn't your default.

I see a lot of requests for things people would like to see, so I think I‘ll add one. When choosing different storage amounts you are also often choosing different storage speeds. Given the insane speeds reported for the 8TB SSD, swap is approaching a point where it is barely noticeable. I don’t understand why reviews don’t give us the speeds of every size of SSD. Seems like information that would affect people’s buying decisions. So, anyone done any speed tests on the various SSD configs? Would love to know, thanks.

I tend to be more concerned with length and width than thickness, but after seeing the size of the 14" compared to the 13", I'm really hoping for a 12" MacBook Air next year, especially if they super-size the 13" MacBook Air to 14".

so far i've barely noticed the notch, other than the fact that it reminds me there is a camera. I opened Photo Booth just to test it out and this might be the first webcam I've used that doesn't make me or my background look horrible.

I'm not digging the black apple logo on the cover, so it's a no for me. haha.

Because the thin ones run hot.

So far so good -- my 14" M1 Pro is screaming! My favorite physical design of a Mac laptop ever, no question. Love it, feels sturdy yet sleek. I'm surprised more people aren't commenting about the keyboard -- it's noticeably better than the 2020 13" MBP i7 which it's replacing. And WAAAAAY cooler! OMG not even a comparison, this thing benches twice as fast as my 2020 "Lapburner" and the fan hasn't gone on once, and it's coooool! This is what I was dreaming of! The notch is literally a non-issue, and I never run feel screen, and I don't like Dark Mode, and you know what? It's like there's a little bit of black at the top instead of a whole long strip of black at the top. It kinda feels like a win...

You have to be a troll. There’s just no other explanation

The menubar is transparent and shows your desktop picture, blurred if necessary.

If your desktop is black at the top, then the menu bar will be too no matter what mode (unless you disable the transparent menu bar).
I just switched my desktop picture to one that forces the menu bar to be black -- oh look, no more notch. I can go with this for sure!
