David Pogue and CNET are kind of brutal in their reviews. Basically say app is stuffed with too much stuff....especially the New tab.

Pretty sure he must have had an aneurysm because I just looked at new and yes there is a lot of stuff there but it is not the least bit confusing. It is just seperate sections of new and current options and sources for music all pretty clearly defined. Just more ways to investigate and find music.

I don't really get his take on New at all.

Not sure what he expects. They provide a ton of options and outlets for discovering music. Of course there are going to be lists of lists that is how it works. You find potential points of interest to help you navigate thirty plus million tracks to find music you might enjoy. This process will involve choices and lists.

Seriously while writing this I have scrolled up and down and went threw new several times and I think pogue had a stroke. Yes there is a lot of information there but it is pretty well labeled. The whole point is to take you down a path to discover music. Pogue wants this without the actual path. Makes no sense.

NEED CROSSFADE!!!! AGREED!!! Lol they do need to update and keep it modern. I like how easy Spotify has it on the phone to queue music and save music with a swipe to the right and left. Tight integration like that needs to come to Spotify!

YES on the need for crossfade.

The New section of Apple Music has 15(!) different subsections and it can be filtered by 22(!) genres. Whoever designed this portion of the app forgot about 1000 noes for every yes.
  • New Music
  • Hot Tracks
  • Recent Releases
  • Top Songs
  • Hot Albums
  • Discovered on Connect: Audio
  • Discovered on Connect: Video
  • Apple Music Editors Playlists
  • Playlists based on Activities
  • Curated Playlists (from Rolling Stone, Pitchfork etc.)
  • Recommended Music Videos
  • Summertime Playlists
  • New Artists
  • Spotlight on Sia
  • Alternative Essentials

Pretty easy to look at that least and decide which areas might be of interest to someone to investigate further. It simply adds depth to the discovery process. I don't care about music videos, Sia eta so I can easily just ignore those.

Maybe I just want to check out hot tracks so I hit new and then click on hot tracks. Then I can see a list of hot tracks and listen to any of them. Even better the new section lists the top five hot tracks under the clearly delineated heading. So if I decide I want to listen to the hottest track I little hit new, scroll down a little bit and click on the track. Two clicks and a little scroll from the main menu.

I could see how this could be a bigger issue if the sections were not clearly delineated and headlined but they are.

If I want to see curator lists, I click new scroll down to the curator list section and then I am presented with a list of twenty different external curated lists.

So if I want to see what playlists Vice is suggesting I click new click curated playlists click give then I am presented with a selection of different play lists related to vice.com.

Not confusing, not time intensive, certainly useful if you are interested in the source of an outside curator.

The apple editors list takes you to a list of 29 genres and then they provide you a lot of options related to that genre.

The point is there is a ton of music and a ton of new music created on a daily basis. Creating pathways so tens of millions of people can find there way somewhere is not going to involve three buttons.

If you are not interested in the discovery process don't click the new button nobody is forced to hit it.

Just browsing through it you find a lot of interesting stuff, at least I do. It is a discovery process not a matchmaking site quiz.

Yes there is a lot in the new section a lot of good. They keep everything into 5 main categories. And you go from there. But there can't ever be too much in new because the whole point is to discover music. As long as the sections are clearly marked as they are and it is easily scrollable they could have 50 options there.

Wow. Simply fantastic. I was a bit skeptical, but man, did they nail it. The "for you" feature and Beats1 radio really does bring a more human element back to music and it definitely makes a difference. The folks at Apple who made this happen should be proud. Great job, Apple!

seems like if you turn on family sharing (which i did for the first time today in order to get the family on Apple Music) you lose the ability to have > 1 i-device on iTunes match/iTunes in the cloud. does that sound right? kind of frustrating.

also apparently if you subscribe to apple music, you don't also have to subscribe to iTunes Match? does apple just keep all your stuff in their cloud if you subscribe to AM and then cancel iTunes Match? i would hate to have to upload it all again.

What kind of music gets played on Beats 1?

I listened for a while...

Megan Trainor, some EDM, Drake, some EDM, an autotuned hip-hop artist I didn't recognise, some more EDM.

Basically, if it's EDM or autotuned beyond recognition, it will be on there.

They did play AC/DC :D

Clearly defined?
Have you ever used Spotify?

I think Apple Music is very un-apple service. It's against their design principles. Apple have been all about slick and simple design, highlighting simple. Apple Music is not simple nor it's streamlined. It's bloated with too many features.

I was waiting for something very simple and streamlined. Didn't happen.

Spotify has nothing to worry about Apple Music version 1. Maybe v2 will be better.

The main interface of Apple Music is white/very light gray with pink accents. But when you select artists, songs, albums, playlists etc. the UI colors change to adapt to the artwork. (…) And perhaps the status bar needs to go too as it just clutters the interface.
exact my thought. (maybe many people will see this ; )
- statusbar interferers with the artwork
- accessibillity? when button shapes are on, navigation (text) isn't readable at all …
(just an other example for UI improvements)

but it is just the beginning, isn't it? things will change …

Okay so, I used it for a good hour now and I just don't understand what the heart button does... Well, I have an idea, obviously, but I thought I would have a playlist with all the loved songs (like in Spotify)... because I discovered some songs (but didn't write down their name) and I can't even find them anymore ! :O

Help?

When there's so much information it's hard to know where to start. What's the difference between new and recent? Is new just a bit newer than recent? And do we really need separate sections for new artists, new tracks and new albums. Couldn't they combine them into one "new" section? Also I think it might be better if playlists were together instead of spread across For You, New and My Music. Overall I just think it's a bit overwhelming and actually makes it harder to find stuff as there are so many places to look.

I'm not exactly sure what the heart does...I'm guessing it helps to better 'curate' the For You section? My For You section isn't great right now as I didn't have much in iTunes and you can't import Spotify playlists so it doesn't have a good idea of my musical tastes.

The selection of genres and artists with the dots when starting with this service is absolutely not working on iPhone 5s and 4s. You can't tap some dots with genres/artists to read/change the size or remove them.

I'm missing also an offline feature for your favorite genre/artist station. I will try it for the three months but i already decided that especially the missing option to set a station/playlist with one click offline is a must have feature for me and that is missing. Therefore i will stick with the free MixRadio app and hopefully soon with a MixRadio+ subscription service for 4/5 dollar/euro a month to have unlimited skips, no bannner (and maybe more then 4 offline playlists).

Unfortunately services like Slacker Radio Plus (which is similar to MixRadio) and Rdio Select, Pandora One and Rhapsody unRadio are not available in the Netherlands.

Apple Music is PITA. It's really complicated to add one song to your playlist:
- Press + on song you want to add.
- Go to My Music tab and search for that song.
- When you find (again) that song, right click and add to your playlist.

Same process in Spotify:
- Find song you want to your playlist and right-click on drag it to your playlist.

How is it possible that Apple made so simple feature so complicated. I doubt that Steve would have approved this.

Mixing streaming tracks and your own MP3 library is just bad design.

Thanks. Basically stuff that I don't listen to.

I'll be installing 8.4 this morning.

One thing I find strange in the UI is that no one thought to put a close button or allow a swipe to close the mini player. Once you play and pause something you are stuck with it on the bottom of the screen while searching, setting up playlists etc.
