How about LTE network? That little feature makes it much better than a 4S, if speed is important to you....

something is telling me that this will be a "US only" feature just like on the iPad

Glass is the least scratch prone material you can have. It downsides are weight and not being as fall-proof. But I am sure that at most one or two percent of all iPhone 4(s) owners ever crack the glass. And replacing the back glass is relatively easy and affordable.

And how many iPhone 4/4S have Apple sold? Even at 2%, thats several hundred thousand replacements needed. At $10 each for a back panel (and I'm guessing they're a whole lot more than that, especially factoring labor costs) we're into several million dollars saved already..... If the back is metal, it won't break.

Welcome to big business.....

So exactly how does a "mockup" "dummy shell" do a "good job showing off" the heft of the new iPhone?

As usual for MR, makes no sense at all.

Agree 100%. Big mis-step by Apple. I don't need to see an extra line of text in the contacts list, I need a wider screen to have a better media experience. Tall & skinny = lame.

So when you turn it landscape mode to watch movies or video...which is what normal users do how is it not "wider?"

i wonder what "special features" it'll get to make it worth switching from the iPhone 4S. so far nothing seems to indicate that it'll do things the iPhone 4S isnt capable of doing besides the slightly bigger screen.

I was wondering about that to. Surely there must be something new in there? Ok we'll get the usual processor/ram/camera/etc updates but it's going to feel a bit lame if that's it. I'm sure they will make a big play about 4G but what about some nice little extras like NFC, inductive charging, etc.

I guarantee once the hardware specs come out all the people flaming this prototype will sing a different tune. I have had my 4 since June of 2010 and am all for this update. It totally looks like an Apple product to me w/ the return of the metal back. I still am a fan of the original design due to it's solid feel and sturdy frame. I hope this new phone has the same feel, but w/ a wider landscape screen. I still would like to have the home go landscape as well though...this is something that I have wanted iOS to adopt from the JB community for sometime now. I can't wait until they unveil the important stuff like processor, camera and software specs.

the leak about the earbuds on the other hand...that is a different story. I have never liked the original iPod buds so I know I will probably stick to my UE 600vi's :D

No idea why people are complaining lack of redesign when most of you are going to put it in a case anyway. iPhone 4 was a great design, what do you expect? Add plastic back like Samsung phones out there?

The reason why Apple didn't add an even bigger screen is because width wise, the iPhone fits perfectly for single handed operation. Anything bigger and single handed use become pretty awkward IMO. Try to stretch your thumb out while holding the iPhone in a natural grip, just doesn't feel right.

I do agree iOS is starting to look a bit dated. It seems like Apple is going the conservative approach rather than bringing something new to the table all the time.

And people saying its almost the same phone as iPhone 4s, I think the inclusion of LTE by itself will be worth the upgrade. I'm sure come 9/12, Apple will somehow surprise us all.

I still have my iPhone 4 and I'm ready to upgrade, bad. But I wish the screen size was that of the SGIII, it's big, beautiful, but not so big that it's a problem. the taller screen just looks odd without it being even slightly wider.

it better be quad core A6, seeing how every new flagship phone has been for the last year

Case!

Honestly not a fan of the two tone design. It makes the placement of the camera weird.

Put in a new case, problem solved! I'm not a big fan of case myself especially when it's a new device but it'll grow on you. :D

I said it once I'll say it again . . .

Give me great software. Everything else is extremely trivial!
You guys have to remember these are just leaks. Apple will find a way to make anything look beautiful. I just want cool new software to go with it.

I still feel like something big is going to happen, we STILL haven't heard about a killer feature(s) yet. And we all know there is one.

I don't think there will be any "killer feature" this go-round. Everyone thinks NFC, but I don't think so. We haven't heard anything about it other then "apples been working on it". Even with Siri, we knew it was coming by this point.

Don't get me wrong, I'm loving the new phone. I just don't think there will be much of a "wow" factor on the 12th. Meaning there won't be some magical feature that hits us outta the blue.

"640kb ought to be enough for anybody." - Bill Gates

Even if I would accept that he actually ever said this, which is disputed, my point still stands. What makes people so interested in this device, even if it so happens to have a larger screen? It’s as if people never become sated and always look for a better smartphone, regardless whether the one they’re owning is still incredible. The software won’t substantially change, it’s still an iPhone.

Take a second look at video 2m52s - FAKE!!!

If you take a second look at the video 2min 52sec in you will see the word "iPhone" uses the wrong font (look at the letter "P") and the spacing is wrong. I say this is a good looking fake.

No one is passing off THIS ONE as a real device. The one in the video is an ADMITTED MOCK UP made by a case company. It is based upon all of the leaked parts.

All those mockups are fakes, a friend already saw the final product and said is very different, only true is screen size and the new dock, these mockups seems from the next iPod Touch prototypes not the next iPhone.

Why keep this is a secret? I just don't understand. There is NOTHING innovative about the iPhone 4L. Maybe this is why they are concentrating on suing their competition rather then being better than them. I will be disappointed in Apple if these "Rumors" are true.

With Apple's great history, I have to think that this maybe a Red Herring to the real phone they will release. If not, how embarrassing that they let it out (no secrecy) and it seems to be ugly, have very little added value over the iPhone 4s, and it was years in the making.

Why is the new iPhone Taller?

REF: Why is the new iPhone Taller - One Row of Icons ???
1. 16:9 aspect ratio, which is the most common aspect ratio for videos nowadays.

2. Wider (when holding vertically) => harder to hold. Taller => still fits in hand the same way.

3. Maybe the components fit in better? Making it wider might end up wasting space on the bottom. I'm not sure about this.

I believe if this is the next gen iPhone the reason it is taller (one row of app icons) is that it will now MATCH what the iPad has 20 Icons per page vs. the 16 icons (not counting docked icons) and therefore will bring unity to future iOs devices.

Example: When you rotate an iPad the icons on the home screen rotate, when you rotate the iPhone the home screen icons do not rotate. Now with the extra row, uniformity will be present (i.e. rotate the iPad and get 4 rows x 5 rows in portrait mode and 5 rows x 4 rows in landscape mode) the iPhone will do the same (my prediction).

Nice idea, but won't happen because many of Apple's built in Apps such as Weather only work in Portrait mode.

I said it before and I'll say it again, I want a bigger screen not a taller screen. But I am very invested in the iOS ecosystem. I'm not sure it is enough to keep me though.

The reason its taller not bigger is that Apple need the iPhone to be usable with one hand, the thumb cannot reach the opposite side of the screen if it gets any wider.

How many more? ... :p

Sept 3rd - Still not a fan of the two-tone back.

Sept 12th - Will buy the new iPhone regardless

Oct 12th - Will have a case over the iPhone and will have completely forgotten about the two-tone back.

That says it all.

Hands-on.... with a mockup?

Next up, hands-on with a printed photo of an actual leaked New iPhone.

I'd like to see a 3D cardboard mockup myself. :D

Coming soon from Tim Cook…

"We're…uh…trebling down on secrecy here at Apple?"

This is absurd. Next we'll have a working prototype and photos of Jony Ive's shaving kit.
