Yes!

I’ve thought about this 5 years ago or so!

I want License, Insurance, and Registration all on the phone so that it can all easily be digitally pinged to officers when people get pulled over. And then when you pay your DMV registration and car insurance online, it automatically updates the “paperwork”. No more having to search for or file more pieces of paper inside your glove box.
Do you not have that in the US?
In Australia your car rego is filled and paid online. My state driver's license, state firearms license, debit card, public transport card and library card are all on my phone.

Not sure whether this was addressed anywhere, but how is NFC or Apple Pay supposed to work, if every card in the wallet will connect?
Apple Pay works via your phone. Your debit card's NFC wouldn't work in any kind of wallet regardless.

I ordered and picked up the wallet at the apple store using public transport.
I thought it would be a handy case for checking in/out system.
I put the public transport card in the wallet. When i arrived at my stop it wouldnot check me out.. then i realized it had a scanner protection. I missed my stop and had to travel back from the next stop.

So, for this to work i have to
- get my phone out of my pocket
- remove the wallet
- put my phone back because you need two hand for:
- slide out the card
- check out
- put card back
- get phone
- attach wallet
- put away the phone
- walk out the transport

.. NICE! .. its so wrong its funny again .. love the useless product

That's because of the magnetic shielding...

This is a very strange product. The vision of Apple is to replace your wallet with an iPhone. They’ve been working on that for many years with the Wallet app, Express Transit, Apple Pay, ... With this product, it feels like they’ve given up on that dream. I rather have them announce further partnerships to introduce digital ID, driver’s license, insurance cards, ...

It's probably more like a proof of concept (for expanding the magsafe ecosystem), but Apple just decided to actually sell it and make some money out of it.

Magnets are generally good at keeping something from moving perpendicular away from the surface of the magnet, but they are generally bad at keeping something from moving laterally across them. That's why this wallet falls off the way it does, and it's why MagSafe is no good for iPhone mounts for cars. It's probably enough for selfie-sticks and gimbals, but there's little reason in those environments to rely on something that doesn't have a super firm grip.

In a sense, the iPhone implementation is the OPPOSITE of MagSafe on the Mac, where magnets were used because their strength could be overcome by a little force. All of the iPhone implementations except for that ridiculous puck charger are for things that you want to stick and stay put reliably.

Super disappointing.

It is apparent to me that the only reason they reincarnated magsafe like this is because it is a trademark that they already own and because it is distractingly different from the blight that is “airpower”

considering two versions of wallet would have been asked to much from a company like Apple.
But even you as customer seem not the brightest light as rfid security is a major topic for ages

Dunno about the aussie rules, but out here in Belgium: if you leave a card in your car, the protections the bank offers are gone: you're responsible for any abuse yourself should it get stolen or so.
Yeah... I’ve never lost a car, I’ve lost about 200+ bank cards. I’ll risk it.

If anyone is here wishing for a good minimalist wallet, I highly recommend this one. https://www.ridgewallet.com/
I can second that recommendation. I have a couple of versions of the Ridge wallet that I use for carrying cash and credit cards. I was still thinking of getting a Magsafe wallet to carry a few business cards on the back of my phone.

It seems like a real step backwards for a hi tech company, having Apple Pay and removing ports and sockets, then sticking old fashioned bank cards to the phone with a magnet 😂 in the same league as the ridiculous iPod nano socks!

I can only speak for myself here but after some thought I don't really see the point of this. That doesn't mean I include any of you in this, your needs and wants are going to be different to mine of course.

From my perspective Apple have come up with a couple of solutions to problems that I don't have. It stinks of them trawling through their bin of rejected ideas from years ago desperately trying to come up with something new to offer. Maybe they asked Homer what he needed.

I place my phone on its wireless charger each night and it gives me feedback that it's charging. So far I've never had an issue so to help the environment I won't be getting what is after all an idiot proof device. Although I wouldn't expect Apple to market it as such, some feelings might be hurt. Maybe they need to sell a cushioned iPhone holder so that users don't whack themselves on the head each time they place their phone to their ear, no?

Likewise a wallet attached to my iPhone. I just don't see the point for myself. I pay with my watch and don't take my phone out of my pocket much at all when I am out. If I need my costco card then I have it in my jeans pocket, sure I could have it stuck to my phone but then again I could just place it between the clear case and the phone. At least that way it won't fall off when I take it out or place it in my pocket. Once again I am saving the environment by not buying more stuff I don't need. My clear case is even vegan friendly, although I have to admit I am most certainly not.

I see the point in a phone case with a built in card slot, at least that isn't going anywhere. They have been available The addition of al the magnets has failed to attract much interest from me.

I’m actually shocked Apple didn’t implement a notification feature for when then wallet is ‘removed’, so that the user would know it’s not attached.

it's better to have an accessory than to not have anything. You are not forced to buy this accessory and I just see people whining for the sake of whining.
I'd much prefer to have nothing (but still have my $59) than a crappy accessory that fails this badly.

Am I the only one that likes this? :D
I never put my phone in a tight pocket though...

seriously who puts their phone in their pocket like shown in the video? Like, honest question, seems like its a more difficult way than it should be. I slide my phone in my pocket with one hand holding my entire phone (not just the top). I mean, I still won't be buying the wallet case since I think the idea of wallet cases in general (even before MagSafe) is useless. Just thought I'd point out how blatantly contrived the guy in the video was putting this phone in his pocket.
It is blatantly contrived, as are many of the comments on this thread to be honest. I wish people would wait to judge this product wait until it’s out in the real word.

I have one of these and have been using it these past two days. It’s best thought of as a cardholder that magnetically attaches to your phone (if you wish it to). You can reach into your pocket and slide the wallet of your phone to use it and then return it to the back of your phone in your pocket, if you like the idea of keeping everything together. It’s also very nice to use the iPhone with the wallet attached, as the wallet provides extra grip.

Personally, I love it, and due to the various wallet / case colour combinations, it adds a level of customisation to the iPhone that I appreciate (rather like the Apple Watch with its different bands etc).

I don't like the concept, because I don't want to wear magnets in my pocket. I'm wondering if iFixit might release a procedure for removing the magnets...

The iPhone 12 mini is certainly a good successor to the 1st gen SE, except for the magnets. Oh Apple, what were you thinking in?

It would make the wallet harder to use if you did that. it’s supposed to be easily-removable from the phone because it’s a wallet, not a phone case.

This. It should not be considered something that is permanently attached to your phone. That is also why the product is actually called "iPhone Leather Wallet with MagSafe" instead of "iPhone MagSafe Wallet Attachment" as incorrectly mentioned in the title of this article. This implies that the main function of it is being a wallet, but you can attach it to the phone via magsafe when you want to (e.g. I often take my wallet and phone out when I sit down and place the phone on top of my wallet - with the apple wallet this would simply make it "one").
