Absolutely NO WAY would I buy one of these, for numerous reasons.
1. It’s not secure (easy to lose the MagSafe & a pickpockets dream)
2. It doesn’t hold enough cards ‘sensibly’.
3. It’s cumbersome.
4. At that price I can buy four magnetic wallets (see below)

I am not sure if you are being sarcastic or not, but that’s how I have been carrying my iphone ever since I got the first one. It goes into my pants pocket with the screen facing outwards. I mean, when I sit down, why would I want the screen to be pressed against my leg? And when I take it out, this is a natural position for me to rest my thumb against the fingerprint sensor (still using a 8+ here) to unlock it.

So I imagine if I were to get the iPhone 12 with the wallet attachment, it would go into my pocket facing inwards, so even if it falls off, it would still be inside my pocket?

....I was not being sarcastic - NOBODY carries their phones in pockets with screens facing outwards for the simple reason that the screen would still be susceptible to knocks and damage even while in a pocket. When the screen is facing inwards (i.e. facing your leg), the screen is 100% protected from all knocks and damages.

If you're seriously carrying your phone with the screen facing outwards then trust me, you in the VERY slim minority......

Having played with the iPhone 12 Pro's magnets a bit, my strong strong sense is that MagSafe got way too much early praise. The magnet strength is too weak to be of much use.

Magnets are generally good at keeping something from moving perpendicular away from the surface of the magnet, but they are generally bad at keeping something from moving laterally across them. That's why this wallet falls off the way it does, and it's why MagSafe is no good for iPhone mounts for cars. It's probably enough for selfie-sticks and gimbals, but there's little reason in those environments to rely on something that doesn't have a super firm grip.

In a sense, the iPhone implementation is the OPPOSITE of MagSafe on the Mac, where magnets were used because their strength could be overcome by a little force. All of the iPhone implementations except for that ridiculous puck charger are for things that you want to stick and stay put reliably.

Super disappointing.
But this isn't the case for iPad Smart Covers, the Smart Keyboards etc. Those all just rely on magnets, yet are very stable, reliable and sturdy. No one ever had any problems with those iPad magnets

I swear I am not joking. It’s how I have always kept my iPhone in my pants pocket since the 4s in 2011.

All this hype, only to persuade people to buy an overpriced magnetic charger instead of simply using the charging cable included in the box.

I’d worry it will wipe the data in my magnetic strips like my license. Also watched the video - just where in that barely accessible space in the wallet would you put an Airtag??????

There are zero places I can't use Apple Pay. From the bus to the ice cream shop to even the crepe stall in the middle of nowhere. Every single place takes contactless and Apple Pay.
The point I'm making is the whole world doesn't revolve around you, there are many places in the world beyond your neck of the woods that don't have Apple Pay in every establishment. Just because a product isn't right for you it doesn't mean it won't fit someone else's lifestyle. I'm always amazed at how people on these forums are so self obsessed.

Same here, most are wearing it like that. For the simple reason that it's more efficient to grab it for a quick view.

Apple creates a wallet that is easy to loose, than sell you an AirTag to try recover it? Sweet ecosystem business scheme.

Come to Europe. I don't remember the last time I've used a physical card or cash in either Norway or Russia. I leave my house only with an ID and my phone.
Totally. Same here in Australia. Our driver’s licence is digital and accessed via the state government app. I leave the house with my car key and my phone. That’s it. Saves me worrying about MagSafe wallets! And if for some reason I need cash, which is so old fashioned these days, I can get careless cash from the ATM using my bank app. Simples.

I wonder how many millions of dollars of R&D Apple spent developing this total fail of an accessory "ecosystem"? Biggest over-promise/under-deliver by Apple in a long time.
You do realize that you will never get anywhere without trying right? If you look at the first Samsung Fold, it was a bad design for real world scenarios with the hinge allowing dust in...Guess what? Samsung learned from this and IMPROVED the next iteration. Do you remember the iPhone 4 where Apple thought outside the box and put the antenna around the phone? In theory it was great but once in real world, it has issues...well guess what? Apple IMPROVED it on their next iteration. This is a gen 1 gadget. Give it some time and I’m sure the next go around, Apple will IMPROVE it now that it will have real world feedback. You can laugh all you want about the R&D spent...but like Wayne Gretzky once said “I missed 100% of my shots that I never took”

I'm going to chalk this up as "you're trying to hard to hate it" type of article with matching comments.

It only holds a few cards and/or i.d....no clip for cash....BUT you say, it's called a "wallet!!"

This is obviously an "accessory" designed for short term use and not as a true wallet replacement. Get one of those big foldy book like cases that hold the world if that's what you need.

I can see this as VERY useful when traveling when I only need my i.d. and 2 cards. Or maybe I'm just running to do a quick errand and don't want to bring my actual wallet.

That's all...a great "short-term" wallet designed for convenience...not necessarily a replacement for your existing wallet.

....and I don't want to say "your holding it wrong", but like anything else that is important, you adjust to make sure you are holding it or removing it a certain way to prevent it from sliding off when it goes in your pocket. It was the first thing I thought of when they announced it and seeing videos of people sliding their phone into their front pockets without holding the wallet portion just seems silly...but hey, that's me.

I tried a car phone holder this weekend with an iPhone 12 Pro and my phone went flying when we went over a bump in the road. Magsafe is way too weak to be useful.
The car phone holder that hasn't been released yet? Or a magnetic car/vent mount not designed in any way to match up with the magsafe design so it holds it properly?? I call b.s.

Bellroy 3-card iPhone wallet.

Haven’t carried a wallet in 2 years. Just a driver’s licence, Medicare card, and my employee swipe card.
Well, its quite easy to have more than 3 cards nowdays. Personal ID + Driver's license + Amex + Second debit card + medicate card (in most countries you will have two, one for public health service, and one for private insurance), + employee card + put 2 randome cards for accessing the gim, student ID or other similar that are not integrated in Apple Wallet. You end up with 5-9 cards quite easy. In a perfect world, every single card can be stored in Apple Wallet, the app is 100% reliable and always functionaning and the iPhone always has sufficiente battery to use the app. But this is not a perfect world. I dont care that Apple wants to enter in the wallets business, but they should do it properly.

Hmmm, I was hoping this would work as a car mount, but it doesn't look good at this point. At least charging the phone will be a little easier. I hope they find a way to improve on this next year.

Apple made this for people who like having a phone wallet (everyone in college) and still want to utilize wireless charging without having to remove their phone case every day.

The article seems afraid to say the product just straight up sucks and is entirely useless. "..if you're not careful, you could have a mishap..".

It's ok to call it useless and a failure if that's what it is. I know this is a pro Apple site (obv) but don't try to sugarcoat something that so obviously missed the mark entirely.

So you'd like Apple to make one of those wrap around wallets, with maybe a detachable phone using magsafe? I think that seems right to me.

I don't think people on here understand how magnets work...at least the ones used here.

Apple had to consider design as well...and in order to make a sleeker wallet (and other accessories), they are using a very thin mating rare earth magnet in the wallet.

Car mount will most likely be bulkier/stronger to grab the phone more tightly than the other accessories where that does not matter as much.

I've been using magnetic cases/mounts for as long as they've existed (check out www.rokform.com) and they hold extremely well without damaging credit cards, but you add thickness for a case that is designed to hold stronger.

I'm guessing the car mounts that will be made available for this might end up being phone specific so they can include a lower "shelf" to help support the phone in case the magnet alone is not enough. But if that's the worst thing that happens, I'm good with it. Having magnets while also being able to wirelessly charge is pretty amazing.

I ordered and picked up the wallet at the apple store using public transport.
I thought it would be a handy case for checking in/out system.
I put the public transport card in the wallet. When i arrived at my stop it wouldnot check me out.. then i realized it had a scanner protection. I missed my stop and had to travel back from the next stop.

So, for this to work i have to
- get my phone out of my pocket
- remove the wallet
- put my phone back because you need two hand for:
- slide out the card
- check out
- put card back
- get phone
- attach wallet
- put away the phone
- walk out the transport

.. NICE! .. its so wrong its funny again .. love the useless product
can't you use your watch for that?
