Of course it’s a fair comparison. You can’t buy an X with a bigger battery.
They’re two separate statements that aren’t related and MR are purposefully misrepresenting the facts - they make it sound like the new A12 chip results in a longer lasting battery and they use an X and the XS Max as evidence of this but it’s false and misleading as the XS Plus is a larger device with a bigger battery.

First post from my new iPhone Xs Max (512 SG)!!! Loving the huge screen. I think this may be the most perfect version of an iPhone ever.

I don’t really get the XS now.

Given that the entry level XS Max is $99 more expensive than the entry level XS, if you’re spending that amount of money, most people are going to spend a little extra to get a big screen.

I imagine that for most people they just want the screen and the kudos of having the latest and greatest & extra storage isn’t really a consideration.

The XS just seems to be there for provide a way to get most people to spend an extra $99 and for people who $999 is not a problem and who want a ‘small’ phone!

It’s pretty much always been like that, ever since the iPhone 6. There are two models, one bigger than the other and $100 more.

However, now they’ve gone upmarket, but will be introducing a cheaper large phone next month to compensate.

I said before that I believe they will also introduce a cheaper small phone next year to round out the product line. Like the Xr it would be smaller than the corresponding OLED model, but would match its on-screen data, using a 326 ppi x2 LCD screen.

That would mean a 5.5” 750x1624 64 GB model for $649 in 2019.

What I was getting it is the psychology/behaviour that’s been traced where the higher the price, the more likely someone is to go up to the next price band, than they would be at a lower price point (paradoxically):

‘Well if I’m spending this much I might as well spend a little more to get an even bigger screen!’

EDIT: What I mean is that once you get to the important psychological $999 barrier, I’d bet that most people find it easier to push on up to $1999 than they would to get a plus at lower price points: ‘I’m not spending $100 more, $599 is already expensive enough!’.

Apple are masters at this sort of thing.

And absolutely, I think a smaller Face ID phone is coming. Though I suspect we’ll first get a iPhone 7/8 hybrid minus 3D Touch first (just ‘iphone’ to match the ‘ipad’).

Say only people who cant afford the Xs

You not serious I hope. If you are than you seriously have to think over your attitude. There is plenty people that have the money but are reasonable. Also there is plenty people that maybe can not afford the newest and greatest but putting these kind of comments in my eyes is only revealing your complexes.

When you test the camera, could you please check if portrait mode is possible with the wide angle camera. The iPhone XR will have this feature. Thanks.

Just played around with the Max in a Apple Store...

It’s big! Too big for me.

If I was going to get an XS, I’d be happy enough with the regular XS model (although even then it’s a little bit too big for me, but I’d be ok with it I’m sure :) ).

Just thinking that the XR’s size isn’t too far off the Max i.e. too big for me.

So if I was in the market for the latest and greatest from Apple, I’d have to start at £999 (I’m in the uk).

I guess the market has spoken - big phones! - but it makes me kinda sad that I feel I’m in the minority of people who want an iPhone that you can use with one hand and forget that it’s in your jeans pocket (you know, like 5 years ago).

Had a day with the Max, coming from a 6+. I'm a faceid convert... I thought I'd miss the touchid, but turns out faceid is pretty slick. Screen is so much nicer and having the screen go so close to the edges adds to the experience. I love the size. Most things are just bigger, but some apps take advantage of the extra space.

I really want to try out the watch now. I'm going to wait a month (week... day? =) and see if I can hold out until the next generation. Not looking likely.

Love Apple... Hate the notch!

New to the notch... I've picked up my phone upside down a couple of times and I find the notch is much less offensive when it's on the bottom of the phone. I know to use it as a phone it makes sense to have it at the top, but for other uses an update could make it more like an iPad and swing around the view upside down. Maybe that's coming with notched iPads? Not likely I guess, but possible.

Available on walk in ... what a flop...

IF Apple would have build an SE sized new phone, waiting times would have been months...

Going with the regular iPhone XS from the iPhone X. In my situation, it was more replacing my dead iPhone X that got wet and no Applecare. Staying away from water this time.

It really died from getting wet? I’ve gotten my 8+ wet a tone of times with no issue at all. How wet did you get it? Did you drop it in a pool or something and forget about it? I thought they were supposed to survive that type of situation.

My XS Max 512 GB just arrived around 5:30pm CST it is an amazing phone and the size is much better than my I phone x that I use for work thanks for another great product Apple.

“much better battery life .. an hour and a half” :D .. is this article paid by apple?

The 12w iPad charger gets you the best bang for the buck - it’s a fraction of the price of a 30w usb c charger and charges almost as fast. It’s also far faster and cheaper than a Qi charger.

Yes - I have that and also the 30w USB C charger, but was looking for a wireless charger for my wife. I bought the Morphie Wireless Pad Charger+.

Doubtful - don't even know anyone that has a SE phone. Sure that is not a top seller...

Everyone soon got over the ‘Max’ name quickly. Have a gold one, it doesn’t feel like a bigger version for some reason. Camera is improved, feels pretty snappy but iOS is still so ehhh to me at this point.

It actually feels a little too big to me. I think I may have finally reached "peak phone." The X was plenty of screen and a good overall external dimension. This one isn't feeling like I'm gaining anything with the additional screen size but its overall size is a bit too much. I'll give it some time to see if I get accustomed to it but I may replace it with a XS (non-max).

I am a mac user myself, although its highly secure but since i heard news of apple being hacked, i am extra cautious and this is why i always keep a VPN on. Best solution is to protect you with a secure and fast VPN.

Whenever I start researching VPN's, they all seem sketchy to me. User reviews are very mixed, with slowed connections, etc.... I am not sure I even trust these VPN services.

Cons- still doing the color shifting ****, the flicker is still noticeable, and true white will forever be a distant memory. The black bar at the bottom of the screen, why is it still there? Why can’t I just force close **** without the third step? Why did they make so many silvers, when you know everyone just wants black or red? I had to settle on silver, aka white.

Otherwise it is fine, they fixed a few things like the keyboard is back in the right location, and I can palm the phone with one hand again. don’t have to squint, which when combined with the flicker, was causing major eye strain with the X. The notch is taking up a smaller percentage of screen space, which makes it less noticeable. Basically the Xs max and 8+ are the proper size phones, the note is just too big, and the xs is too small.
